Kevin "Game Mag Weasel" Gifford has a plan. He's sitting on a motherload of old (like, pre-2000) video game magazines and wants to know if anyone's got the means to scan them all. We know, as fellow fans of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen, how... trepidatious you may be about a video game based on the groundbreaking maxi-series. After all, it's episodic in form, it's a prequel to the original story, it's downloadable, and it's coming from a developer you've likely never heard of, Deadline Games. I mean, I went as Rorshach for Halloween when I was 13 years old, so I'm with you. But, unless you're Alan Moore himself, you must be at least curious about the thing. More »

Good ole rumor-speculation combo, begun by the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and applied by Wiifanboy. First, EGM in its rumors column of the Sept. 2008 edition, promises that "one of the most beloved (yet overlooked) action-adventure franchises of yore will soon get a surprise retro-revival sequel." OK, that, like, rules out Contra, right ? Because that's anything but overlooked. More »

To recap: Konami are imposing restrictions on what publications can and cannot talk about when reviewing Metal Gear Solid 4. No mention of 90-minute cutscenes please, and while you're at it, no talky-talky about install sizes either, K? IGN are cool with that. EGM, refreshingly, are not. Due to "limitations Konami wanted to impose on our comments", the editorial team decided to refrain from giving the game a score, and in lieu of a "review" posted a lengthy roundtable discussion about the game instead. It's hardly a gloved fist on an Olympic dias, but it is nice seeing somebody do something about such an...unsavoury practice. More »

This again? Yes, this again. The latest batch of rumors to come from EGM's Quartermann dredges up one we've been hearing for as long as we can remember, one that pegs Rare hard at work on a new Killer Instinct. This one, dubbed Killer Instinct 3D: Death, Destruction and Doom, is said to bring the delightfully goofy fighting game that pits boxers against skeletal pirates, lizardmen against werewolves into the world of 3D. More »

The first issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly ran back in May of 1989. But even those of us who read it probably don't still have the issue on their nearest coffee table. Now Retromags has gone back in time, stolen some poor kid's reading material and posted it out of spite. Well, that, or they paid a bit too much for an antique issue after months of searching, spent hours retouching any signs of aging in Photoshop and then made it available to us in PDF for free. You can go with whichever version of the story best reaffirms your faith in humanity and the power of the human spirit. We'll be catching up on the latest rumors about Mega Man 2. More »

Yesterday's news that Namco Bandai was reviving Splatterhouse for a next/now-gen release was met with greater enthusiasm than I'd expected. Splatterhouse is back! The next issue of EGM is said to have the exclusive first look at Namco Bandai's revival of the twenty year old sidescrolling hack and bludgeon classic that features a Jason Voorhees lookalike on the hunt for his missing girlfriend. In the arcade version, protagonist Rick Taylor uses the power of the Terror Mask and his expert ability to whack things into a bloody mess to track down the lovely Jennifer. The TurboGrafx 16 port is currently available via the Wii Virtual Console. More »

Simon Cox, Vice President of Content for the 1UP network, writes in his official 1UP blog that parent company Ziff Davis filing for bankruptcy isn't all gloom and doom. It's not like the staff of 1UP and EGM are going to be working out of refrigerator boxes when and living off government cheese. Business is, well, business as usual and bankruptcy can be a positive thing. How's that again, Mr. Cox? More »

In the April edition of EGM, Jerry Bonner, a former ESRB employee who worked for the company over six months, fills us in on the hot gossip of what it's like to work inside the machine. While he dishes plenty of information we already knew—like that the ESRB raters watch clips in lieu of actually playing the games—some of what he said about the ESRB's culture of secrecy is daunting: More »

The publisher of EGM, Games for Windows: The Official Magazine and 1UP.com has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Manhattan court today, in an attempt to restructure its sizable, long-term debt. Ziff Davis has, according to Bloomberg's report, filed papers indicating it has somewhere between $500 million and $1 billion in debt, with previous reports pegging the debt at around $400 million. More »

The one version of the PlayStation 3 that currently supports PlayStation 2 software—via emulation of the "Emotion Engine"—looks like it's about to go the way of the dodo. Exactly how crushed should those of us be, should we want to experience PS2 classics on our future PS3s? Oh, totally crushed for now, but the future may provide a glimmer of hope, backing us away from the ledge. PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell says there are "possibilities" the PS2 playing capabilities could come back to the gutted PS3 in the most recent issue of EGM. <a href="http://kotaku.com/355645/is-playstation-3-backwards-compatibility-dead-maybe-not" title="Click here to read more about Is PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility Dead? The latest issue of EGM should be hitting subscriber mailboxes any day now, but 1UP has an early look at the month's rumor round up from the enigmatic Quarterman. One of the biggest unconfirmed stories is that Capcom is indeed readying a sequel to Xbox 360 zombie fest Dead Rising. A Western developer is rumored to have taken the development reins, one based in the Los Angeles area. Capcom has certainly warmed up to developers outside of Japan, as development on Okami, Bionic Commando and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been outsourced westward. More »

That's what the latest issue of EGM says in its Quarterman rumors section, indicating that an unnamed "first party sequel" is already in development for whatever console Microsoft has planned after the Xbox 360. That could mean a next-gen—yes, that next-gen—Halo, Perfect Dark or Viva Pinata is just a few years off, as is the next step in the Xbox hardware cycle. Seems a bit early, doesn't it, given that the 360 is only two years and change old? Given that the Xbox and Xbox 360 were born just four years apart, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility—and these games do take quite a bit of time to cobble together—but we doubt that another short lifecycle on the current generation box would sit well with gamers. More »

The latest batch of rumors from EGM's venerable Quarterman character/column points to a mysterious "major Japanese third-party publisher" signing on for a series of classic remakes to be delivered via the PlayStation Network. Who? EGM won't say, but 1UP head Sam Kennedy tosses out a few ideas—Konami, Capcom, Square-Enix. No word on graphical overhauls or Xbox Live Arcade-style releases featuring both visual updates and original versions, but we're hoping that they're not just upscaled More »

Earlier today, we posted about the plight of "tiny Brazilian blog" Blogeek, who, as you may remember, posted a pair of screen shots of Street Fighter IV yesterday. Amazingly, the site scooped 1UP to its own exclusive, claiming it had received the screens and details on the Capcom fighter from an "anonymous source." The site's owner, Douglas Pereira, wrote us this morning, crying out for help. "Ziff Davis is going after me. They're chasing me," he lamented. It was very heart-wrenching. More »

Yesterday a tiny little Brazilian gaming site called Blogeek run by Douglas Pereia stumbled upon some new information and screens of Capcom's Street Fighter IV, which were due to be revealed in the next issue of EGM, which will surely grace bathroom floors across the country when it comes out. Gaming websites around the world - including Kotaku - picked up the story and ran with it. Douglas received the information from an anonymous source, but it all looks and feels legit. Well now said information has been confirmed in the form of a threatening e-mail to Douglas from André Forastieri, the boss of Futuro Comunicação, the publisher of the Brazilian EGM.
"The content you posted in the site blogeek is property of Ziff Davis, given from Capcom only to Ziff Davis and EGM issues, with embargo for the publications. Your publication of this subject is theft of intellectual property and should have immediate legal consequences. Ziff Davis and Futuro want you to cut off the content form your site immediately."

According to Next-Gen's blog, Capcom may be revealing a bit more of the recently announced Street Fighter IV this Thursday, including exactly how the game will look. How will the company show it off? Presumably via EGM magazine, by way of 1UP. The current issue of EGM teases in its closing comments "We're kicking off our first issue of the new year with a cover story so epic, we can't even tell you about it", signing off with a roman numeral three that looks suspiciously like it belongs in a Street Fighter logo. 1UP writes today that "you won't be disappointed" by the new EGM cover it will reveal on December 6th. Coincidence? Doubt it! More »

Did you know that Banjo Threeie for the Xbox 360 was, for the course of about 72 hours, in speculative danger of being canceled? Neither did I. But, according to a remark from EGM executive editor Shane Bettenhausen in the most recent 1UP Yours podcast, a "big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time, that people are very excited for" was supposedly at risk of cancellation. That led some to believe that the third proper Banjo Kazooie game from the Microsoft owned Rare was on the chopping block. More »

Anyone who's ever played one of Konami's Castlevania game can tell you, the Belmonts are the franchise heroes. The family has sworn to fight Lord Dracula. Without the Belmont clan, you wouldn't have a Castlevania game! Don't tell a recent ad in Electronic Gaming Monthly for PSP title Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles — It refers to the "Beaumont family." Who the hell are they? Konami writing "Beaumont" is a bit like Nintendo writing "Murio" or Microsoft referring to Hilo 3. More »
