His logic is also rather short-sighted. Even if we did give up games, how many meals would this buy? This seems to me like a large-scale version of giving a man a fish and letting him eat for a day. #speakup(Edit comment)
hm. ElectroGremlin seems to have had a breakdown of some sort.
Sure he has been kind of a jerk, but many people on here are jerks. And not all of his comments in his history have been so odd and spammy. He seems to have really lost it after that anti-white male article. So, in pursuit of trying to say that everyone was equally to blame and so no one is to blame, he went on this wild tirade across the site, repeating the same message over and over again.
It's worth noting, though, that his argument does not appear to be that gamers cause poverty. He's trying to actually say the opposite. In trying to defend straight white males from the claim that they have privileges others may not, he has attempted to portray the idea that simply being a gamer makes you a privileged individual, and that would mean that singling out straight white males wouldn't mean as much. He's okay with being well-off, and he's saying all gamers shouldn't be ashamed of their privileged place in life. Which unfortunately misses the point of "privilege" in this context. ElectroGremlin is talking about being better off, and it's true that gamers are inherently better off than many people in the world simply due to their ability to have disposable income for games. Yet, that has little to do with the idea that the current world does treat people differently depending on racial, sexual, and gender factors. While many are moving away from that and toward greater equality, that still isn't the case yet; so, people will use terms like "privilege" to refer to a common inequality. So, that's a matter of opportunity, not a matter of how well off one actually is. It's in that which his point falls flat.
It's a shame. Issues like this can absolutely hit a nerve with people, and it clearly hit a nerve with this man. He definitely broke Kotaku commenting rules with the spamming; so, we'll see if any staff act on either suspending or banning him. Hopefully he'll regain his senses and at least just respectfully disagree.
ha. Don't give Balmung too much grief for that. Not all of ElectroGremlin's comments in the past have been horrible. Many commenters will just lose it sometimes. #speakup(Edit comment)
Yeah, which is really weird. From what I've gathered, the problem comes when I try and comment more than once on the same story. If I reload a page, I can comment again. #speakup(Edit comment)
Hey Kotaku, who do I have to kill to get BIT.TRIP featured in Kotaku Melodic? With Runner2 coming out on HD platforms sometime in the future, it would be the perfect time for everyone in the world to get to know this brilliant series better.
Whoa whoa whoa. BIT.TRIP is a lot of things but if you're implying that it's unfair, then you're dead wrong. If you're simply saying that it's really hard, then you're right. But trust me, the series gets easier after VOID. It's really worth it to stick it out and play the entire series. #speakup(Edit comment)
Guys I am not a fan of the gut check feature here. Not going to complain about it, as it is your site, you do what you want and feel is aproppriate to do. But I think its odd that you are taking peoples opinions on games they havent played yet (SEE: Modern Warfare 3, I am sure there are others but I just skip the articles I dislike) and yet when someone voices their opinion in protest of this, you simply unstar them without an explanation why. Even if the person is right in every possible way. (See:[kotaku.com]#comments)
So i guess what I am saying here is if you want to make "GUT CHECK" more appealing maybe make the writers play the actual game instead of judge based off of trailers and gameplay videos. I hope he gets restarred though I know the likely hood of that is quite low. Just let the writers have an actual opinion on gameplay.
Some comments and replies in articles are now cut-off to one line with no option to reply or heart. It's very odd. Just happened around 5:30AM CDT. The comments, if cut off, just end with "...", but if the comment was short, it may just end and then have no option for replying. The whole comment shows up fine in your profile, but it's impossible to reply to them in the context of the thread.
I hope it can be fixed lickity-split! :)
(P.S. Any headway on adding back the option to only see Promoted comments? It disappeared this last week.)
If you see this(or one of your lovely staff members sees this and can pass on the message), this would be a perfect time for the staff to have at least a small article or blip explaining the recent issues with the commenting system.
It started with broken user images, then comment read errors, and now just outright comments disappearing, not posting, little to no editing, and comment save fail errors all over the place. We no long have the option to only see promoted comments, and commenting is just generally in disarray. I'm certain you have some explanations for these issues and are working on it, and so it would help for you to say that publicly for all commenters to understand. Please not just in Speakup or Editorial Board. An actual article, even a small one, could go a long way in reassuring people. Thanks!
Isn't there also a new part of kotaku for posting technical difficulties? It'd be wise if we brought our complaints there as well. #speakup(Edit comment)
That's editorialboard. It isn't really frequented by the staff much.(at least, they give little indication or feedback that it is) It's kind of a joke. And when every single user if having severe issues, I think talking about it just about anywhere is appropriate. I think Joel can appreciate some suggestions, and in this case, I am absolutely certain that some staff acknowledgement could go a long way. #speakup(Edit comment)
No, it was something else, some kind of response I got when the article about the Penny Arcade app showed all of Brian Crecente's favorite games. #speakup(Edit comment)
If there is one, then I am not aware. Though, I would then postulate that almost everyone on Kotaku doesn't know about it, as well. So, it basically would serve no purpose. And it still wouldn't change that they need to make some kind of statement about how nearly broken the commenting system is right now. #speakup(Edit comment)
Ok, quick disclaimer. The video is from an ultra mega liberal vlog on youtube. To our right wing friends out there if you can find a news source out there that's not so ultra-liberal be my guest and post the link because I want ALL the information I can get about this from ANYONE. The link in the post is to yahoo.
That out of the way it seems that the guy who made pay pay apparently either played waaay to much Bioshock and disagreed with it's views of how a small, self contained libertarian or objectivism based society will go insane and destroy itself with genetically enhanced scuba divers and wants to prove them all wrong.
I sometimes peruse the other Gawker sites (mostly lifehacker and io9 - shocking!) and one of the neat things I saw on io9 was a book club where they talk about science fiction books.
Could probably do something similar here pretty easily with the latest novel length video game book (I know there's the week in comics but some people enjoy the "feature length-ness" of a book). #editorialboard(Edit comment)
Dunno if you guys have seen, but..."Characters Doctor Strange, Frank West, Iron Fist, Nemesis, Nova, Phoenix Wright, Rocket Raccoon and Vergil have been accidentally revealed on the Capcom website."
Is anyone having problems rendering Gawker sites on Chrome since yesterday evening? I have to use Firefox atm to view Kotaku, Gizmodo, and io9. Right now in Chrome those sites look like they are from the 90s.
Ever since the redesign, I've noticed a sharp decline in reviews posted by Kotaku. It's gotten to the point where I don't think that any have been posted in a very long time. Kotaku was always my go to site for reviews, as I feel like they were the best around. Reviews were going through an odd growing phase after the transition from the "Loved/Hated" style, but they finally got to a point where they were really good again.
Then, all the sudden, nothing. I don't think there has even been an official explanation as to why. I can only assume that the end of reviews, and the general decline in the quality of the posts on this site, is directly connected to the redesign, as this all started around the same time.
All I ask is that one of the editors give us a reason why there are no more reviews.
I think that when you star a commenter you should tell them to read the Gawker guidelines to being a starred commenter. I just did, and I think there are some sensible things in there people need to know. Particularly about the grammar and and the 'cool off' period before you click 'submit'. I mean, it seems like common sense stuff, but when things get heated in the comments, common sense often goes out that window, yo.
For example, I'm guilty of some of the most ill-considered comments in the history of the internet, and I prefer to think think of myself as less than 50% idiot.
Plus, it's kind of neat having behaviour guidelines. And, it makes being a starred commenter feel kind of special.
I get it everytime and the only way I can comment is writing out my comments in Word, then copy and pasting.. anytime I type ot native in the browser it fails.. I'm on Firefox with 10.6 osx.. I think it could be my firewall here at work.
I used to come here and comment everyday for ywars and now I just avoid because I know it'll piss me off.
I remember there used to be a private messaging system. Is there any plan to bring this back that you know of? Sometimes I would like to ask a certain user an off topic question that doesn't really fit in the commenting section.
Also, I don't know if this was an intentional fix or if my computer just spontaneously started working better, but the site works with firefox and MSIE properly now (no lagging text when commenting). #editorialboard(Edit comment)
Kotaku.com.au has noticed, so I hope that .com and .ca will follow suit: I friggen' LOVE #Ponycorns, and so should you. It's a cute game by a 5-year old girl and her dad, with some of the BEST voice work I've heard in a game.
Before I posted, I searched #ponycorns and nothing came up, but then I typed in the full name of the game and I found it afterwards. Thanks, though. The main article needs to link the mirror, though. (Edit comment)

Gonna have to call out a #trollpatrol on a Kotaku member.
Goes by the name ElectroGremlin.
He keeps spamming the same messages over and over again, getting a tad annoying.
He also blames gamers for poverty, which is a little odd.
