To celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the Command & Conquer franchise, Electronic Arts is offering a FREE download of the original game that started it all, Command and Conquer (Gold Edition). the game is Windows XP compatible and is the same version that came with the Command & Conquer: The First Decade collector's edition. Free downloads are always great but it sounds like there are a few steps to get the thing to actually work. But Kotaku readers are a clever lot and I'm sure you will be able to figure it all out with the help of EA's handy dandy instruction manual available on the site. In Japan, a download of Mainichi Issyo on the PS3 means not only the ability to watch news broadcasts with Toro and his pals, but also a little remote PSP play. Sure, it's only for the Japanese, and the "playing" only really involves being able to pamper Toro with food, but it's something. After last week's update for the PSP (which really only allows you to access the content downloaded on or streamed through your PS3), it's a hopeful sign that Playstation is starting to use the technology to, oh I don't know, actually play a game with. It looks like Sony has rolled out some sort of working download service for the Playstation Portable in the UK. If you visit YourPSP.com's download section in the UK you get dumped into a kinda new interface called the PSP Store. So far the store seems to only feature a bunch of freebies, including movies, demos, music and photos, but its designed to allow you to purchase online downloadable content. Could this be Sony's answer to iTunes? It looks like a workable interface, though it will be hard to judge until it's packed with tons of content you'd actually want to download let alone pay for. Despite my recent rant about Sony's total lack of support for the Playstation Portables's media functions, I still haven't given up completly on the device. I was watching the local news this morning, a rarity, and they started talking about a site called Guba. It looks like Guba just goes in and grabs video uploads from a bunch of Usenet groups and makes them available in several formates. Here in Japan, Sony's Portable TV service (P-TV) has hit the ground, jogging. With this service, registered users with 2.60 firmware can download PSP video content. Users access the site via WiFi or USB cable through a PC. While some of the content denoted with a big "F" is free, some isn't. Eurogamer, via GamesIndustry, reports that EA important dude Dr. Jens Uwe Intat says the future will bring a continuous pipeline of downloadable games. Ten years from now (sometime after we get those overdue Hoverboards from Back to the Future 2) gamers won't necessarily be buying the latest titles at actual shops, but downloading. It looks like everybody is suddenly getting into the Playstation Portable video publishing business. PSP World is reporting that TiVo is beta testing its Desktop 2.3 software which will allow consumers to transfer recorded television shows from their TiVo to their PSP or video iPod. Keeping up with other games that released holiday map packs, Star Wars Battlefront II on the Xbox has released some new treats via Xbox Live. There's a premium download coming in January, but to tide fans over until then, LucasArts added an Assault mode Hero Free For All to Kashyyk — which lets the game's heroes (the stars of Star Wars) run around and own dudes. The update in January will bring some new Jedi into the fold as well as some full-featured maps from the original Battlefront, all with the required makeover for the sequel. More »
