A Tweeted offer to back a sequel to Tim Schafer's cult favorite Psychonauts was "a semi-joke," said Markus "Notch" Persson, the creator of Minecraft and a guy who's not hard up for cash in light of that game's success. Notch rattled off a host of reasons why we shouldn't get our hopes up, especially the cost of the project. More »

After asking the world to help his studio Double Fine make a new old-school adventure game, he has destroyed Kickstarter's records for having the fastest-earning page. As of this posting, they're at $875,000. That will change in mere seconds. More »

When Microsoft announced earlier this year that Double Fine would be making a Kinect-based Sesame Street game, many wondered if the developer studio behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend were leaving their own original ideas behind for a lucrative license. But Nathan Martz, project lead on Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster, says that it was just the opposite. The game that became Once Upon A Monster actually started internally at Double Fine as an independent project. That fact and more came to light when I e-mailed Martz some questions about the creation of the new Sesame Street game. He discusses how he and his Double Fine colleagues came to grips with creating a game that would star some of the most recognizable characters in the world and why even the worst kids' video games are triumphs of a sort. More »

For some reason or other, jazz soundtracks are a rarity among video games. Plenty of games feature heroic chiptune anthems, Hollywoodesque orchestral scores, and evocative sci-fi themes, but jazz, one of America's oldest art forms, remains surprisingly underrepresented. More »

The loading screens for Double Fine's triple-fine Xbox Live Arcade mech game Trenched are spot-on parodies of early 20th-century pulp magazine covers. Unfortunately (or fortunately), they go by too quickly to be properly enjoyed. Double Fine kindly provided all but one cover—that one had a spoiler—so that you can chuckle at their overt manliness at your leisure. (Scotch will be served, provided you are sitting at my desk.) More »

How best to explain the wonderfully unusual Trenched? It's true that it's a tower defense game. It's also a third-person shooter, a deeply customizable war game with loot drops and online player progression. This is World War I-era trench warfare, only this time, the good guys have giant gas-powered mechs and the bad guys are walking televisions. More »
