Sega<a href="http://kotaku.com/5788468/meet-the-four-americans-who-built-sega"> is an old brand</a>. There's heritage in that, but also baggage. In an <a href="http://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/6089/the-art-of-fiction-no-211-william-gibson">interview with author William Gibson</a>, the creator of the notion of "cyberpunk"&mdash;a milieu that remains heavily influential to the world building of video games&mdash;comments on what inspired him to deviate from the then-too-polished world of mainstream science fiction. By all accounts, "No F@*<a href="http://kotaku.com/#!king/" class="posthashtag">#king</a> Respect: Social Game Developers Rant Back" was a hit at Game Developers Conference 2011. A standing-room only crowd listened to a panel of eminent designers address the virtues of and double-standards applied to social games. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5777930/the-social-games-rant-you-didnt-hear-from-gdc" title="Click here to read more about The Social Games Rant You Didn't Hear from GDC">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

A common criticism of Disney's Epic Mickey (made by Totilo <a href="http://kotaku.com/5707333/review-epic-mickey-reveals-the-price-of-mischief-but-with-camera-obscured">in his review, too</a>) concerns the game's flawed camera view. No really, the engine in Fallout and Elder Scrolls runs into AI problems if ladders are introduced, and the developer just works around them. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5613374/hey-+-why-arent-there-any-ladders-in-fallout" title="Click here to read more about Hey — Why Aren't There Any Ladders In Fallout?">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

There doesn't seem to be a lot going on in the game scene right now (at least for people not interested in motion controls, ever-more-unsettling modern war shooters and misjudged forum policies), so I'm taking advantage of the quiet time to go back some of the basic structures in games. When veteran developers Rare <a href="http://kotaku.com/5553226/one-of-the-oldest-logos-in-gaming-is-no-more">changed their logo earlier this week</a>, it got me thinking about other studio's brands, and how a good logo can really help define what a developer is all about. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5555166/my-game-studio-logo-hall-of-fame/gallery/" title="Click here to read more about My Game Studio Logo Hall Of Fame">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

In this day and age, logos are a fickle thing, companies going through them like clean underwear in the constant search for "reinvention". This week, one of the oldest developers in the industry has broken down and joined in. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5553226/one-of-the-oldest-logos-in-gaming-is-no-more" title="Click here to read more about One Of The Oldest Logos In Gaming Is No More">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Guild Wars 2 character artist Kristen Perry discusses the process of creating the clothes the races of Tyria will wear 250 years after the first game. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5541617/guild-wars-2-fashion-is-250-years-ahead-of-its-time" title="Click here to read more about Guild Wars 2 Fashion Is 250 Years Ahead Of Its Time">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Like movies, the design of games can often be reduced to a set of "building blocks", various elements that you can combine to form the final product. It's an abstract concept, but one that's perfectly illustrated in this...card game. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5530433/the-building-blocks-of-video-games" title="Click here to read more about The Building Blocks Of Video Games">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
