<![CDATA[Comments from jayntampa]]> <![CDATA[Comments from jayntampa]]> <![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Is This God of War Brett Ratner Confirmation?]]> I think you guys are seriously overreacting and may have possibly lost touch with reality.

First off, the X-men movie - Ratner was brought in at the end, the script was fubar, the cast chosen and had contracted start dates, and he had to get the thing rolling in no time. The result? Bryan Singer even said he did a good job -- and the film grossed more than the preceding 2 (Worldwide amounts $296/$407/$459). Was it as good as the first 2? No ... but, how could you honestly expect it to be?

Second, Brett Ratner has done the "dark" thing well -- go watch Red Dragon.

Third, he knows how to do large set pieces.

Finally, actors like working with him.

No, he doesn't know finesse, and he isn't going to be considered one of the greats -- but, he's far more than competent. If you expected God of War to ever be anything more than a popcorn flick, you're mistaken. 300 had way more gravitas in it's original form than God of War ever did.

The movie will be competently made -- the deciding factors will be the actors and the script. It may suck, it may be good -- we won't know until it's done.

Man, Kotaku has become the refuge of the whiner. People rush to be the first to complain with every post that goes up.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Itagaki Didn't Leave Tecmo, He Was Fired]]> @Ashurahori: There is never justice in stealing from someone. If he had a contract, regardless of his social behavior, it is Tecmo's obligation to pay him. Period. That's really the end of the story.

Tecmo may attempt to obfuscate things, but he delivered on his end, so they need to pay.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Marvel Changing The Way It Handles Game Licenses]]> Nova is in the pic, so it's all good ;) Hopefully, he'll be in the next Marvel Alliance game ... but, I'm not holding my breath. Actually, the Annihilation comic series would make an awesome game -- something in the vein of Dynasty Warriors with superheroes kicking butt through the Annihilation Wave.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on SouthPeak Announces Two Worlds: Epic Edition]]> I enjoyed Two Worlds, also ... it did some things better than Oblivion, actually. For one thing, the different regions looked different -- and, when you went to new areas, at least there was some challenge with the enemies. The enemies auto-leveling killed Oblivion for me. The fighting got boring after 10 hours because I could kill everything in a few hits.

In Two Worlds, I'd periodically come across foes or groups that would tear my head off.

Anyway, yes, there were issues with the game, but the patches helped a lot, and it was fun to play for the time I had with it. Maybe it's simply that I didn't have high expectations for it ... but the hate is very much overblown.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on The Five Finalists For Kotaku's New Comment Czar]]> Dear Lord ... the choices ... it's like peering into the void and having your soul sucked out. I'm sure any choice up there will usher in Armageddon.

Good luck to all the prospective doom-bringers! :P

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on 64 Percent of Those Polled Gave Up Wii Fit]]> The reason people quit is that it isn't a very good exercise programs -- the activities don't flow into one another, and you constantly have to stop to do things. They should take a lesson from Yourself!Fitness for their next outing.

It's just an unwieldy program.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on 2.40's Trophy Walkthrough]]> @aevanko: Seriously ... it's very awkward watching that thinking how I've been getting achievements for years. It's like someone coming out with a lightbulb today that, while it may be better, is still a lightbulb -- and trying to sell it like it's this amazing new light-emitting device.

Better just to say something like, "You guys have requested this, so here it is." Don't act like you're doing it first ... it's like they expect us to be stupid.

First commandment of PR, "Know thy audience" -- I think he forgot the PS Blog is for gamers, not the casual public.

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on 2.40's In-Game XMB Walkthrough]]> It's about time ... maybe my PS3 will get some more use now that it's a bit more user friendly. One little bit, it's odd that he had to pause the game before going into the XMB -- one of the good features of the 360 is that it automatically pauses when you pull up the blade. How hard could that have been to program in?

Still, I'm very happy it's nearly here.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on SouthPeak Scores $12.9 Million In Funding, Plans More Two Worlds]]> Two Worlds wasn't nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be ... it had some good systems and the patches fixed most of the problems. The thing about Two Worlds is that there was no hand-holding at all. It took me hours to figure out that you could combine swords of the same type to capture the attributes you wanted -- and you could level up some awesome weapons.

The very beginning was frustrating because you had no idea where to go or what to do ... once you figured all of that out, the world was actually pretty cool.

I'm willing to give the second one a chance.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Warren Spector: No More 100-Hour Games, K?]]> Please remember: Calling someone like Warren Spector a moron is like tatooing the word imbecile on your forehead. Calling someone a moron because you disagree with their opinion pretty much colors you as not being oldest enough to be out of diapers. Learn a little civility and respect.

Personally, I'd rather play a 20 hour game with a tight story and killer gameply, than a 100 hour game that is pretty much filler. Games, per hour of entertainment, are still among the cheapest forms of entertainment ... a 20 hour game you're paying $3 per hour. Go to a movie in the theater, you're paying between $4 & $5. Buy a CD, $10 per hour.

Then again, I'm fortunate to have a job that allows me to buy more than one game a month. I can completely understand why some people would want games that last longer, so that they can get more out of their investment.

Game developers have different design philosophies, and that's good. Variety makes the industry stronger. A differeny philosophy doesn't make someone an idiot. However, an ignorant post may make you one.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Become Kotaku's Next King of Comments]]> @Fnor: The KoK must ban people, and then pretty much ignore any response. There is no appeal process, you have to make a decision and stick by it, even if people agree. That forces people to really consider their posts ... if they can talk their way out of it or mediate the process, it doesn't work.

That's why Witz was successful -- he just did it, end of story. And, a lot of people called him an a-hole for it, and dictatorial ... but, it was the right way to handle things.

Kotaku commenting isn't a right, it's a privelege ... one that can be taken away at any time by those lording over the site. And, in my opinon, more people need to lose their voice here for there to be any substantive discussions to resume. See, it used to be that way, but something has changed recently ...

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Become Kotaku's Next King of Comments]]> I've been here long enough to say this. The person needed for the ban-hammer needs to be a dictatorial a-hole, period. He or she doesn't have to be nice, have the kindest personality, or be cool -- they just have to shut-up the people that disrupt the community and add to the spam. He or she must be fair and knowlegeable ... and cannot be someone known to have taken sides in any flame wars of the past.

Immediately discount anyone recruiting followers, begging for the job, or is even remotely annoying in their posts. I'd never want the job -- but, whoever takes over, will have big shoes to fill after Witz.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on War for Profit in MGS4]]> @Spoony Bard: They are, but albeit indirectly, on US Military personnel answer directly to the people through the election of the President. As well, they take an oath to uphold the Constitution, unlike PMCs and mercs. It may not make THAT much of a difference, but it's enough of a difference to be significant.

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on War for Profit in MGS4]]> If you get a chance, watch the documentary "Why We Fight" -- highly enlightening. Watch the trailer, then get the film:

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Mounted AoC Camper is Patient, Contemplative]]> The problem with some MMORPGs is that there is not a negative for killing someone ... there should be. You should get a wanted level, or you should automatically have a bounty on your head. This would encourage higher level characters to patrol lower level zones to grab some quick cash or prestige and would deter people from griefing.

Now, let's say you're in a contested or wild zone, all is fair ... that's just how I like the games to play.

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Saints Row 2 Fires A Shot Across GTA IV's Bow With Sewage Hose]]> I'll definitely be picking it ... mainly because it IS different than GTA4. Why would they have any desire to be the same thing?

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Resident Evil 5 Not Redesigned After Race Criticism, Says Producer]]> "... there was a collective sense that what we'd just seen was going to stir the pot, as a big brawny white guy had just done his share of laying waste to an angry mob of Africans."

No there wasn't ... no revisionist history here. The whole thing started with a single blog post and rolled into the ridiculous storm it became. It was a manufactured tempest. People of every ethnic persuasion came out and clearly said that they did not see any racist intent, motivation, or colorings in the trailer.

Some people did ... I can understand that. However, the whole thing was patently ridiculous when it reached the levels it did. It's time to move on and stop dredging up problems where there are none.

<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on The Week in Games: Kung Fu Bug's Life Bee Movie Cars Panda]]> Yeah, I have to stick up for the Panda here, too -- it's been getting excellent reviews so far, and the game, while not top tier, is more than competent. So much negativity just to try and get a laugh looks bad when the comment is just so wrong.

]]>
<![CDATA[jayntampa commented on Conan GM to Goons: You PvP Nice, Now ...]]> As far as I see it, this is the best way to handle things. Politely, informally reminding powerful groups that EVERYONE is there to enjoy the game, and that they'd appreciate a little personal responsibility is the RIGHT was to do things.

Have we become a society that someone just informally suggesting that you place nice has become so onerous that it deserves a rant? Seems to me that a group of 15 people is plenty big enough to allow guild play.

I completely hate the precept that just because you can do something, you should. I give huge props to the GM in the way he politely handled the situation without being an a-hole ... and, I like how the guild member was polite and asked some questions. No doubt, they're laughing about it now, but there's nothing wrong with that.

This is a non-issue and to make it into something negative is just using an awful lot of spin. Again, an informal talk is the best way to first address something that players see as a problem. Self-policing is always prefrerred to a heavy hammer approach.
