At that point, they have no further say in what I can do with that product.

"Because we like games and want them to continue" is a bullshit answer. So is the belief that if the pirated copy didn't exist, everyone who pirated a copy of Hawt-Game-10 would instantly pony up the $50/$60 for it.

You pay the gas station $50 to fill up your car's gastank. You've paid for that gas (paid for it before you filled up the tank, no less), and now it's yours.

Except now every time you want to start your car, you need to call the gas company's customer service department, give them the number off the receipt, and they'll activate the special anti-gas-piracy nanites that'll let you start the car.

But god forbid you be driving a Toyota, because the gas company doesn't like Toyota's, so the gas you paid for won't work in your car.

Or you're out in the boondock's somewhere, and you have no cellphone service.

Or their call center is closed for any number of reasons (holiday, disaster, weekends, etc).

If this shit happened, there'd be riots in the streets. This is the EXACT SAME THING as the DRM they are slapping on this game.

No, it's more along the lines of filling up at a gas station, and then having to call that gas station every time you wanted to start your car, to remind them that you did actually pay them for the gas first.

Of course, the first 6 guys ahead of me all wanted the Special Edition, and the store only had 7 copies (the 7th was for the guy standing behind me).

Apparently it signed me up, finally (who the fuck chooses the restrictions for a login as "8-32 characters, including lower case, period, dash, and underscore"), but the "CONFIRM YER INFO" took so long to pop up that it timed out.

Now I can't register (I get "hey, this email already signed up" messages) and I keep getting "Error has occured" when I try to log in.

What a clusterfsck.

It was only on the third phone call, when I expressly asked for a refund of points to rebuy the content, that they mentioned the relicensing and started that spiel.

The only reason I sent the story into the Consumerist is because I honestly expected it to be next year sometime before they got it fixed, based on everyone else's experience with it.

I suppose the logic would be that the original terms for the content was "unlimited use on the console that purchased it, or on the GamerTag that did so.." so when Microsoft replaces the console, they need to fix the licensing to uphold the terms. But you are chosing to upgrade, so that's a different matter...

At least that's what I got off the top of my head... does sound pretty fishy that they said that you'd be "pirating" the content... were you talking with the US or India techs?
