<![CDATA[Comments from SnakeCL]]> <![CDATA[Comments from SnakeCL]]> <![CDATA[SnakeCL commented on Kojima Talks The PS3 And MGS4's Shared History]]> @kylo4:

Ahem.

My understanding, is that due to the engine design of the game, 360 or PS3, it would require HDD installs after each chapter.

The game streams level data from the hard-drive, and audio-data from the disc. Since you'd need to fit all of a single-level's data onto one disc, you'd need that 4.6 gig or so of level/model data, as well as the audio data. You'd also need to put the audio data on the first layer of a DVD9, since read-speed is halved when reading the 2nd layer. This leaves the level/model,etc. data being accessed at much slower rate than the HDD in the PS3 would do solo, ie. texture pop from hell.

MS's stance on HDD installs would be problematic for a 360 version of MGS4, and even then, the way the game is designed to stream from two sources simultaneously, it would most likely need to be installed onto the system HDD via each disc just like the PS3 version.

<![CDATA[SnakeCL commented on The New 80GB PS3: Just The Conjecture (And Maybe Some Facts)]]> @Furysetzer:

You're still not making any sense.

There are actually a plethora of good games on PS3, just as there are on 360. People seem to be waiting for this "golden goose" on PS3 when, to be frank, there hasn't been one on either console.

My tv from 7 years ago has 5 plugins for standard-def gaming.

Also, why not play those games you missed-out on the PS2 that you own? Instead of waiting and hemming and hawing about the lack of PS3 games (which is a fallacy).

Also, PS3 for $400, not a sane price. 360 for $400, sane price, gotcha.

I sense a 360 fanboy here. The fact that the only "good game" on PS3 is MGS4, your lack of common sense, and the ease with which you ignore valid arguments pretty much cements it.

Good day to you sir.

One of the main plot points in the game is that the Chimeran Towers aren't built, they're excavated. They've been underground, possibly since before mankind could even walk upright.

Furthermore, the website actually went on to mention that some miners discovered a Tower in the American Midwest while digging. Everything was hushed, and that's when the US's huge push on technology and warfare started, probably in preparation for what was coming.

]]>
<![CDATA[SnakeCL commented on Is That a 360 Devkit on Kojima's Desk?]]> @wild homes is weathering cephalopod trouble!:

From my understanding, the problems with porting MGS4 might have more to do with the way the game streams information. It streams most of the game-data (textures, etc) from the Hard-Drive, and it keeps most of the sound-data on the first layer of the disc. The Installation files, to my recollection are on the 2nd layer, since they don't need to be accessed immediately like sound data.

While its concievable that one could use 4.7 gigs of space per disc for the game data, that's also neglecting the slower-access speed of the 2nd layer on a DVD9 (effectively half-speed).

So either, load times will be absolutely atrocious, or assets will have to be downgraded to fit per-level.

<![CDATA[SnakeCL commented on Crytek's CEO: Piracy Threatens PC Exclusivity]]> The whole "piracy rights" argument smells like faulty logic to me. Several people here have already stated "if a game has DRM I'll pirate it". Well, no. You see, you didn't buy the game, so you don't get to play it. Its akin to trying to have your cake and eat it too. If you dislike DRM so much, don't buy it. But that doesn't give you right to play it for free because you don't agree with a business decision. (Clearly, I think the PS3 should have 1 gig of total RAM, so I won't buy one, I'll steal one instead). What kind of bizzaro world logic is that?

Secondly, in my experience, in all forms of piracy, the people who "download to taste" something, almost never actually buy anything. Take (for an extraordinarily geeky example) Japanese animation, or anime. Many alleged fans will download entire series (currently available on store shelves), watch 50+ episodes to "see if they like it" then proclaim the ending was crap so they aren't buying it. The same applies to videogames. The sheer number of people I know who download a game, play through the entirety of it, then say "eh, I didn't like the ending" or "eh there's no replay value" is utterly astonishing.

The key to everything here is something called entitlement culture. People today feel they are entitled to things. They are entitled to whatever they want in life, and if someone won't give it to them with a minimum of fuss, they'll steal it, plain and simple. In digital piracy, there's no backlash because nobody wants to be "that guy" who calls his friends a idiot for having 40+ PC games burned onto DVD's that he downloaded.

Lastly, the whole "a download does not equal a lost sale" argument is essentially a red herring, primarily because there shouldn't be any downloads in the first place. I'll never understand this. A game is not good enough to spend money to purchase, but somehow several hundred thousand people are spending time downloading it, and playing it, so clearly there is some value to it. Its black and white. Either you feel the game is good enough to warrant a purchase, based on price, or you don't, and you don't purchase it. Developers wouldn't care about how many people were downloading games illegally if instead they just weren't buying them. That's when the game companies start to look at their pricing structures and ask "just how much can we charge for this game, and how many more people would purchase it if we dropped that price?"

Essentially, the counter-arguments are all rather flimsy excuses as to why someone deserves to get something they want, for free.

from wikipedia...

Blizzard North was originally an independent company. It was established in 1993 under the name Condor, founded by Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and David Brevik. The company was purchased and renamed by Blizzard about six months before the release of their hit PC game, Diablo, in 1996. Diablo proved to be incredibly successful, and the still-more successful sequel Diablo II was released in 2000. An expansion pack followed the year after.
