ErskinPig commented on Why the Term 'Gamer' Does Not Need to Go Video game players. 'Problem' solved.

Incidently, I really don't care about 'clearing the name' of gamers in the eyes of the wider public. Let them think what they like. Are we really that insecure?

If anything, making games more mainstream just makes it easier for companies like EA and MS to push forward their exploitative policies due the ignorance of the common man.

Fuck 'em I say. By gamers for gamers is the best way forward.

ErskinPig commented on Why The Bad Company Win Isn't A Win At All Nice try at being insightful Mr Plunkett, but you have sadly failed miserably.

In no uncertain terms, the DLC model they were trying to push was wholely unnacceptable. EA pushed the con to its limits and this IS a great victory for common sense.

Letting them go ahead with it would have been a tragedy. I find your suggestion that we've made things worse laughable and contemptible in equal messure.

ErskinPig commented on Saints Row 2 Release Date Announced @Lot Krotan: STALKER has its flaws, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a truely remarkable game. ErskinPig commented on Still Life With Project Origin Abomination Doom 3 did it for me. The flashlight thing is a minor complaint and whilst it was a clumsy/lazy way to make the game more scary, it DID make it more scary which is ultimately the whole point of the game - to make you feel scared. Playing that game was exhilerating. It was genuinely terrifying, but in a good way. FEAR was simply creepy and moody - less intense.

ErskinPig commented on Still Life With Project Origin Abomination @Witzbold: Heh, well that was obviously a deliberate design decision by iD, but it's still a cop-out solution.

ErskinPig commented on Gran Turismo Trying To Catch Hollywood @KnaveX: Not really. Think that films like the Matrix & Phantom Menace are almost 10 years old now (where the hell did that go?). Games are still nowhere close to that level.

As I said in my earlier post, it's probably technicallly possible that games could rival film CGI today in 10 years, but once you factor in all the social realities, it seems unlikely.

ErskinPig commented on Gran Turismo Trying To Catch Hollywood That gap sounds reasonable, but of course, it's not just about technical possibility, it's also about more tedious stuff like market forces. With the overwhelming success and dominance of the Wii this generation (a relatively modest machine from a graphics processing perspective), perhaps we shall see a change of 'mood' and a shift of focus by MS & Sony away from pushing the raw power of their machines in the next iterations. PCs may well reassert their absolute dominance as the graphical powerhouse platform while consoles focus on other things. This could result in the progression of graphical sophistication slowing dramatically.
