<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Intelligence Group Mistakes Fallout 3 Screens For Terrorist Propaganda]]> Ummm. Based on RTFArticle, this image was used in a video posted on Jihadist websites. Just because some bad monkeys stole someone else's work to provide part of an illustration for their vision does not mean that they do not have such a vision. Perhaps now we can unleash the might of the fully armed and operational DMCA/*AA machinery on Al Qaeda and solve that niggling problem once and for all.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on 360 Kiosks Coming to Children's Hospitals]]> @Fantus: The website is for a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that apparently does a lot more than install/maintain the 360 kiosks. Those things all cost money, hence the request for donations. As someone who spent months if not years in hospitals over my lifetime, I am damn grateful for every single little thing strangers have done to help my family... from a stupid plastic wonder dog hand puppet with a prominent Wienershnitzel logo on it to total strangers that went down to the hospital gift shop and got me a stuffed puppy just because I was sharing a room with their daughter and didn't have anything except a book to read (I was 11 at the time).
The fast food logo didn't detract anything from having that plastic sock puppet to take my mind off the pain. I'd imagine sick kids haven't changed much since then.
So quit being a jackass and realize that it doesn't matter to the sick kids if Microsoft tries to get publicity from their efforts. What matters is that there is some change from the mind-numbing boredom alternating with anticipation of pain and actual pain of a typical hospital stay.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Midnight Club's Picture Perfect LA]]> @Dazz: 405 doesn't suck that much especially if you're on a bike. <![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Putting Together the 'History of RPGs' Class]]> Maggie,

Actually the postwar Japan class sounds fascinating. One of the more interesting classes I took in school was on the culture of post-WWI Germany until Hitler.

An examination of a nation that had a strong militaristic culture, threaded through with racial and cultural superiority complexes and then got beat like a mule is always interesting. Surely the loss in WWII had more than a passing influence on the evolution of all aspects of Japanese culture, including games.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on 49 Million U.S. Gamers Buy Used Games To The Tune Of $1.3 Billion]]> @mva5580: "Could you not on some level compare used console game sales to PC piracy? You're talking about a situation where the company that made the game gets nothing back in return after the original sale of a particular game."

Umm no. You bought it. It is yours to do with how you wish. Smash it with a hammer or sell it. It is yours. The claptrap about "used sales" == "piracy" is an IP owner's wet dream. Why on earth should video games be different from LPs, CDs, DVDs, books or any other media?

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Games For Windows Moves Online]]> And thus dies the best game magazine ever. Computer Gaming World... which became zombified as Games for Windows. <![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Watch The Linger In Shadows PS3 Demo]]> Yawn. If they want to do a good demo, they should study a few more late-80s/early-90s Amiga techno demos. This wasn't terribly impressive on a technical level to anyone who's ever seen a single previous or current generation high end PC graphics card manufacturer demo and, IMO, pretty boring plot-wise.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Hot Shots Golf: Out Of Bounds Review: Insert Golf Term]]> @Mike Fahey: Pretty much every single PS3 game I've gotten lately requires an install. Wonder if that has to do with limitations of the PS3 blu-ray drive read speed.

Hot Shots Golf is a hoot though. It is a generally well-done game, though I have a hard time telling if the weather is actually affecting the game play beyond the ball drive distance.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on American Men Need To...Ooo, Gran Turismo!]]> @rejack: More and more money gets poured into the education system with less and less adequate results. Perhaps the single exception is self-esteem. We seem to be real good at producing illiterates and semi-literates who are "as good as any, and better than most". Meanwhile the majority of lessons learned from "new media" seems to be how to produce the most creative variation on "You enjoy giving fellatio, you homosexual person of African-American descent". So yeah, I think there's plenty of blame to go around.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Second-Hand Games To See GameStop Through A Recession]]> @SnakeCL: Where did the "average profit for a new game at retail is 1-3 bucks" come from? Gamestop financial report mentioned ~20% profit on new merchandise, 40% on used. That 20% adds up to ~$10 bucks. Even assuming that's gross, no way Gamestop overhead eats up 80% of gross profit. Mind you, 20% isn't any great shakes, that's why Gamestop loves it when you buy used, but it is better than supermarket levels, where profits are ~5%.

It is pretty amusing to look at old Computer Gaming World ads and see what prices for game software were like back when there was competition...

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Video Game Violence: Counterpoint]]> @jerrt: Except that it isn't all that funny and misses the point... <![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on THQ Creative Director Rants On Piracy, Death Of Iron Lore]]> @dsmx: People pirate when it is easier than buying. Financially it will _always_ be easier to pirate. However that's offset by other considerations for many people. Those considerations range from the pragmatic, such as "Only single player/LAN is available in the broken product, I play online, therefore I will buy the unwarezed version" to "Store version comes with physical extras that I want" to purely altruistic "Gee, developer X and the publisher sure spent a lot of money to make this, I should probably buy it" or even "Taking without paying is wrong." Saying that people pirate because there is something wrong with the game is lying to yourself.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Rent-To-Own A Nintendo Wii For Just $948]]> @DaiMacculate: As far as the first part of your post, would it have been the same if "Communist Gamer" was "White Pride Gamer" or "National Socialist Gamer"?

Regarding the second part: Nobody is forcing the "low end" of our society to buy a current gen video game system or any other gen video game system. Nobody disputes that this is a terrible deal, made all the more so by the "lease" part of it, which on the surface locks the customer into the whole 12 months, vs. the usual absurd rent-to-own payments where at least part of the payment amount is buying the customer the right to walk away from the arrangement without paying the full price (or getting the merchandise). This is like a gas station which habitually charges 5-10 cents more per gallon than the station across the street. The beauty of capitalism is that the customer can choose to go to the cheap station or to this one, depending on the customer's perceived needs. If there aren't enough customers who see themselves as needing to pay the extra cost... too bad for the seller. Arguments that the "lower end" need to be protected from free choice are inevitably based on the perception that the proponent of the argument knows better what's good for someone else and generally lead to all sorts of undesirable effects.

]]>
<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Rent-To-Own A Nintendo Wii For Just $948]]> @Guizzy: Actually it is abusing the stupidity of retards who cannot manage credit _and_ think that a videogame system is a necessity when you don't have a spare $300.

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Molyneux Says He Was A Bit Of A Prat]]> I wonder how much of the Bullfrog games was Molyneux and how much was the "30 of [his] closest friends". The early Bullfrog games (as in Atari ST/Amiga days) were uniformly brilliant and groundbreaking. Populous, Syndicate, Powermonger. The latter titles were ok, but not revolutionary. Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper... done well, but done before. The latest Molyneux/Lionhead... not so much. Fable was blah, Black & White was ok after the expansion but not very interesting, the Movies was not terrible, but it would be a stretch to call it anything beyond mediocre.

]]>
<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Xbox 360 HD DVD Price Plummets]]> @Fallible:

Please, please be so kind as to share where I can pick up a PS3 for "around" $205 (205.01? 205.10? dare I dream, 204.94? Heck, I'll SPLURGE and bite even at 205.51!).

I own both formats. I'd be pleasantly surprised if either format lasts longer than laserdisc before being dumped in favor of downloadable rentals. Meanwhile I am enjoying very very nice looking and sounding films in both formats.

At $129 MSRP, and $20 a month for netflix this is a cheap way to dip one's toes into HD. Especially since the drive also works on PCs and macs (though afaik OSX still doesn't do HD-DVD playback).

<![CDATA[ElReyMysterioso-PBUH commented on Wii Fit Has Gone Too Far This Time]]> Pretty cool for someone who is not a hyperactive 14-year-old. It actually reminds me of the stories about creation of the Amiga. The designers took one of the motion/weight-sensing controllers that they designed for a ski arcade game and hooked it up to a computer. Then, when someone was stressed out, they'd go sit and/or stand on the controller, trying to meditate. This was immortalized in the AmigaOS system error messages which were displayed in a flashing red box with a caption "guru meditation error". As long as it isn't the only thing you could do with WiiFit, it will be interesting.
