Those of us who pre-ordered Guitar Hero World Tour were given a little sheet of paper instructing us to go to a website and enter our receipt number in order to receive a special super-secret code that would allow us to unlock all 84 songs included with the game at once. While I play Guitar Hero solo more often than not and prefer unlocking the songs manually, which gives the whole experience a game sort of vibe, I know some of you are impatient and don't want to be stuck playing the songs you don't like when you could be playing the songs you do, so I've gone ahead and printed out a screenshot of the code so the more impatient among us can get their World Tour on.

Hit the jump for a screen cap of the code, safely locked away from eyes that would rather just not know. Now I go back to staring at Activision reps with a wild look in my eyes until they announce Stan Bush's "The Touch." More »

GTA IV isn't the hardest game around, but hey, maybe you're not the best gamer around. Maybe you've got stubby thumbs. Maybe you can game, just can't be bothered, and want the ability to spawn sports cars in front of you just for kicks. If so, take note of the following GTA IV cheats, which will do things like restore Niko's health, give you all the game's weapons, change the weather and adjust your wanted level. ACHTUNG: these mess with your saved game files and can stop you earning achievements, so you might want to turn autosave to the "off" position if you want to safeguard your progress against a tragic corruption. <a href="http://kotaku.com/387454/stuck-on-gta-iv-try-these-cheats-you-cheater" title="Click here to read more about Stuck On GTA IV?

Chris Dahlen has an interesting post up on the issue of cheating in video games, in particular whether game reviewers can (or should) cheat. Of course, anyone is capable of cheating their way past a tough spot, but should reviewers be held to a higher standard? Dahlen points out that reviewers who admit to taking shortcuts or blowing past extra features or side quests tend to cause people to throw a fit; on the other hand, is galloping through a game at a blinding pace good for anyone, reviewers especially? Is there any hard and fast rule for this sort of stuff? <a href="http://kotaku.com/357328/can-game-critics-cheat--ethics-in-reviewing" title="Click here to read more about Can Game Critics Cheat? After the LocoRoco interview, game creator Tsutomo Kouno was kind enough to pass along a copy of the LocoRoco Guide Book, which went on sale today. The book features hints and pointers on how to tear through the game. Best of all, there are two pages of LocoRoco stickers! Schweet. What's cool about this video showing how to use the Master Hand as a playable character in Super Smash Bros 64 isn't so much the character itself — which is kind of neat but would cause your friend's to suck your eyes out of their sockets over how cheap it is — but that it took 7 years for someone to figure out that rotating the control stick 30 times in a row would unlock him. Florian Eckhardt More »

I didn't really care for the DS version of Pirates of the Caribbean, it was just much of a button-masher and didn't offer up enough variety to make it worth my time. So, the Saints Row demo is out, but the entire city is depressingly unavailable. Or is it? Some clever gamers have figured out a few ways to get you through the blockade.Just park a truck near the barrier and double hit Y. Glitches abound beyond the borders, but it looks easy enough. Way to program, guys! A Japanese research firm released the result of a poll that surveyed folks on their online gaming habits. What did the study turn up? Surprisingly, table and card games beat out RPGs in popularity, while a whopping 70 percent said they played only free games. Less than 10 percent expressed any interest in real-money trading and illicit activities. While PC gaming thrives in neighboring Korea and China, Japan still proves it's a diehard console/portable country. And with the Wii and the PS3 launching later this year, that doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. Brian Ashcraft More »

Back in March, we posted that a Florida man was suing Blizzard for blocking the sale of his WoW guide on eBay. The seller, 24-year-old Brian Kopp, did not include any copyrighted text or storylines and made "fair use" of selected screens for his $15 home-made book, "The Ultimate World of Warcraft Leveling & Gold Guide." Blizzard has decided to forego its lawsuit and let Kopp continue selling his guide. In future editions, the seller promised to retain disclaims about the book's unofficial nature and refrain from including links or instructions on finding in-game "cheats." So, this guy's guide has no WoW plot lines, no links and no info on in-game cheats. What does it have? Brian Ashcraft More »

1Up's parent company Ziff-Davis ('sup Luke) has launched a new search engine that looks for stuff relevant to gamers. It's called Gazerk and places content into categories relevant to gamers: game reviews, cheats and screenshots. It's still in Beta, but eventually should be a worthy supplement for old standards like Google and Yahoo. More »

Like the Sgt. Pepper's album, Guitar Hero has a hidden track. The tune's name is Trippolette, and was perhaps cut because it sounds like prog-rock. The song was still left on the disc. To unearth this treasure, players need a cheat device like Codebreaker or Gameshark.
Game Masters: Folks Who Write the Guides

The New York Times looks at the rising popularity of strategy guides for video games. One game guide writer, David Hodgson compares writing a guide to a game to "writing a travel guide to a place that doesn't exist." The article points out that despite the availability of free guides on the Internet, print guides still sell, and sales are still rising. But what about the ethics of using guides? Some people interviewed swear by them, others frown on their use. Is it OK to use strategy guides to plow through a game? Do you use them? Do you buy the books for their art or for the fast track through a game? More »
