My mind still reels every time I imagine what a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG from BioWare for the Nintendo DS could possibly end up like. Whenever I ponder it too deeply I have to have a lie down until the world stops spinning. Luckily for me, Susan over at Wired's Game | Life blogs was able to push past the delirium-inducing concept to pose some hard-hitting questions to BioWare's CEO Ray Muzyka and President Greg Zeschu about the project. Unfortunately the interview reads like they handed the questions off to a PR representative and then went out for a latte.
GL: Many feel that the Sonic franchise has lost its way. Do you see this RPG as a chance to revitalize the property?
RM: Sega and BioWare are committed to delivering a high quality game. Story driven games have been BioWare's bread and butter for years, so we're certainly utilizing the knowledge and experience we've learned to create a brand new and immersive Sonic with a rich adventure and story that's fast-paced and incredibly fun to play.
Susan Arendt did her very best to get the goods on the game, but almost every answer she received in return sounded exactly like that, filled with all the adjectives they teach you on flash cards during 'Hyping Your Game 101'. All I really walked away from the Q&A with was that Sonic is good, BioWare is excited, and the game will be easy to pick up and play, which is awesome considering I eventually plan on picking it up and indeed playing it.
All we can do now is sit and wait for more details, taking solace in the fact that BioWare could simply swap Sonic for a character in anything they've developed in the last five years and it would still be the best Sonic the Hedgehog game since Sonic Adventure hit the Dreamcast.
