There's still no sign of 15-year-old Brandon Crisp, who went missing after his parents confiscated his Xbox, but Microsoft Canada added $25,000 to the reward for information leading to his safe return, doubling it. Microsoft is also working with Barrie, Ontario authorities, divulging IP addresses of anyone who may have come in contact with Brandon via Call of Duty 4, his favorite game. More »

Call of Duty 4 multiplayer is great. Even a year after the Infinity Ward-developed game's release, it's online play is still very popular on Xbox LIVE. So the developer of the upcoming Call of Duty: World at War (AKA CoD 5), Treyarch, had a tall order when creating the multiplayer for World at War. Noah Heller, Senior Producer at Activision, sizes up the situation and how it went down:

We sat down and we said CoD4 multiplayer is sterling, it's a wonderful experience, and we said, 'what can we add to it?', and the list is really long. It's a lot of different weapons, it's keeping some of the perks but renaming some perks but doing lots of new perks, it's different weapons and different attachments for every different race, different types of grenades, bringing back game modes that people liked from previous Call of Duties, like War, adding in tanks, adding in the ability to revive, giving you a reward when you Prestige, raising the level cap to 65 and doing a lot of different things at different levels, adding in some new kind of spoiler gameplay like nerve gas and signal flares and stuff like that, adding a squad mode, so now you can choose to be a squad leader and set a waypoint on your map that everyone can go to, and the kill streaks of course, lots of these little tweaks add up to something which feels like Call of Duty but I think it also feels like something new and different... I think it feels much better than any Call of Duty I've had a chance to play. CoD4 is great multiplayer. CoD: World at War is its own new multiplayer and I think fans will really enjoy both.

Call of Duty 4 set a high bar that must be daunting for Treyarch. Even if the developer gets close and fails, World at War should turn out a-okay.

Call of Duty 4 is great. We like it, you like it and Bungie sure as shit likes it. Doesn't matter if Bungie's Halo 3 and Infinity Ward's CoD4 duke it out over most played XBLA title, Bungie looks at the game as a possible source of inspiration. We think of games that sold a bagillion copies over the past few years, we think Halo 3. GTA IV. Wii Play. We don't normally think Call of Duty 4 (probably because its marketing didn't beat us to within an inch of our lives), but hey, maybe we should. As of today, Activision are reporting that they've sold ten million copies of Infinity Ward's materpiece. Ten. Million. They wouldn't/couldn't divulge the breakdown by console, but did say it had been "most successful" on 360. More »

Amazon once again maps out an entire day of gaming deals, this time around giving the Xbox 360 fans a little bit of of the love they've been reserving for Nintendo gamers lately. Today kicks off with the Deal of the Day, which is the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Game of the Year Edition for only $39.99, a damn fine price for those couple of guys who don't already own it. More »

We're smack dab in the middle of the Call of Duty 4 Live Fire weekend, where Xbox 360 COD4 players have a chance to win prizes, play with devs, challenge girls, or maybe even learn a thing or two. Kicking things off are hourly prizes, in which everyone who plays a multiplayer match of COD4 online are entered, meaning your odds pretty much suck. They get worse for the Grand Prize - an Xbox 360 Elite console, VIP Accessories kit, and various bits of Call of Duty 4 merchandise. For those of you not into games of chance, Infinity Ward game devs will be on hand tonight from 6-9 Eastern to challenge all comers. The tomorrow night from 9-11 Eastern you can choose to challenge the girls of the Xbox Gamerchix, or possibly three-time UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver. Finally Sunday is for newbies, with many of the Xbox Ambassadors available to help you learn the ropes, or just suck less. Hit up the link for more info on the Call Of Duty 4 Live Fire Weekend. More »

Bonus NPD news! Activision & Infinity Ward have taken this month's NPD software sales and done the math on Call of Duty 4's lifetime sales data. According to them, it's sold nine million copies since November. Nine million. For a game that didn't get the marketing of, say, Halo 3, and was only released in November, those are some staggering numbers. Staggering, but for such an extraordinary game, totally deserved. They're also reporting that the 360 map packs have already been downloaded one million times, so I get the feeling some corks will be popped and some backs slapped over at Infinity Ward come Friday afternoon. More »

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the shit. This is the gist of Activision marketing director David Tyler's recent comments in UK trade mag MCV, where he called out recent EA and Ubisoft shooters for failing to catch the hearts of gamers around the world.
"We're pleased to have Call of Duty 4 leading the way in the FPS genre, with recent launches such as Army of Two and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 failing to inspire. Call of Duty 4 has been a phenomenal success for us and reflects Activision's commitment to creating truly ground-breaking games."
I'd say this was a pretty damn cocky statement, but last night at Walmart a group of college kids nearly repeated the sentiment exactly, saying that after playing Call of Duty 4, Army of Two and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 just didn't come close. Eerie. With over a million people playing online any given day, a good chunk of the population playing Halo 3, and GTA IV around the corner, things are looking pretty saturated in the Xbox 360 online shooter department. More »

Brandon Erickson at Gamecritics puts forth an interesting question. Is there a "critical period" in children for learning video game skills, the same as there is for language? It doesn't preclude the learning of languages, or the innate hand-eye coordination specific to video games, later in life, but it may explain why younger kids who grow up using controllers second nature will, depending on the game, always whip the ass of an adult who learned on that stupid Colecovision phone-looking thing. More »

The long-lost PS3 iterations of Call of Duty 4's first map pack aren't looking so lost these days. Infinity Ward have announced that the PS3 maps are done and have been submitted to Sony for certification. From there, all it'll take from Sony is for them to certify that they're awesome, and you PS3 owners should be good to go. Provided the PSN doesn't make like Xbox Live and crash & burn from the strain, that is. More »

Xbox Live Is In A Bad, Bad Way (or Revenge of Xbox Live Outage Watch 2008: Day 105.) Nope. You're not the only one experiences issues with Xbox Live tonight, dear gaming friends. The service is, we assume, buckling under the pressure of the multitudes trying to snatch the new Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map pack. The official Xbox support site reads "Xbox LIVE users may experience issues with purchasing marketplace items, receiving title updates, and account management." A handful of readers have notified us of their issues, including the inability to redeem Microsoft Points cards and download from Marketplace. Our suggestion? If you don't want to have a frustrating Friday night, take a Live breather. <a href="http://kotaku.com/376453/" title="Click here to read more about

Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack Back On For This Week. Good news, map pack fans. Infinity Ward will be doing its damnedest to bring you your Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map fix this week, not the next, as reported yesterday. The official blog writes that gamers should expect to see the map quartet invade Xbox Live late Thursday or early Friday. Call of Duty 4 Map Pack Hits Next Week. Infinity Ward's "Variety Map Pack", originally scheduled for April 3 to hit alongside the Game of the Year edition of Call of Duty 4, may now instead be enjoyed a week later. <strike>There's no official word on the delay—and it is April 1, sadly—so await confirmation on the matter.</strike> According to the media alert, April 10 is the day. Regardless, we're sure that seven days of extra aging will only improve the complex flavor of this quartet of maps. <a href="http://kotaku.com/374907/" title="Click here to read more about

You use a lot of real guns in games today. Heck, I spent nearly all weekend playing Call of Duty 4, and am now convinced I can work the assault rifle arsenals of both the American and Russian armed forces. I really can't though, and Popular Mechanics are here to remind me that despite looking and sounding real, most in-game guns don't behave like they're real. Take Rainbow Six Vegas 2, for example. Developer Philippe Theiren:
"I take these weapons, and look at what defines them, or what people think defines them. For an Uzi, people think it fires lots of bullets, and it's really inaccurate." That, he knows, has nothing to do with reality—if anything, Uzis are considered some of the most reliable and accurate submachine guns around. But the 80s (and Miami Vice in particular) offered us the Uzi as a low-life villain's weapon, spit-fire and out-of-control. "So I make it fire faster than it should. It's about taking the personality of a weapon, and making it shine in the game,"
Slightly disappointing, if only from a "what if Red Dawn happened to me" point of view, but interesting nonetheless. More »

Activision have announced that they'll be re-releasing the 360 version of Call of Duty 4. The upcoming "Game of the Year" edition will include the full game, new box art (to show of all their shiny "best of..." awards) and - strangely - a token for Xbox Live that will let users download the new map pack, which is due in April. Why not just include the maps on the disc? Eh, whatever. This "Game of the Year" edition will be out in April. More »

Infinity Ward continues to take down the competition on the software side, with Call of Duty 4 for the Xbox 360 narrowly outselling Devil May Cry 4 in February. Capcom's decision to go multiplatform for its newest stylish action game was clearly a smart one, with the 360 version outselling its PlayStation 3 sibling by a good 60,000 copies. More »

Need an excuse to give to the wife in order to negotiate some Call of Duty 4 playtime this weekend? "But, honey, there's a new patch on Xbox Live! I have to test out the new sniper scope accuracy changes for my clan match on Monday!" That'll totally work, trust me. Or wow her with the new Kill Cams, including ones for grenades and M203 rounds, which you know she'll just love. The full list, including new quick mute options, network speed improvements and new spawn points, is detailed at Infinity Ward's official Call of Duty 4 blog. More »

Target's weekly ad has some pretty sweet deals this time around. The Rock Band Special Edition bundle for both PS3 and 360 is going for $149 (in store only) which is about $20 off the usual price. Also featured is a $40 gift card with the purchase of the 40GB PS3 and a $10 gift card with the purchase of one of eleven different games. Infinity Ward does it again. After a spectacular November and December in the US of A, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sees a respectable January, securing the number one position on the software charts. 2007's number two seller, Wii Play, keeps its second place spot, beating out both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III with 298K copies sold. More »

How do you know when you've made it? When the marketing staffers tasked with pitching Rambo to moviegoing audiences namechecks your game. In this case, it's Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare being honored in a roundabout way by Rambo, which the Arizona Daily Star apparently called "a nasty, Call of Duty 4-style shoot em' up!" More »
