Here's a video that is uncomfortable to watch on two levels. The first is that I feel terrible for Brian Ambrozy, the editor-in-chief of Icrontic, who is appearing on Fox News to try to explain why and what kind of video games are now eligible for federal arts funding. The second is the nonstop assault Fox and its counterpoint ringer make on one's intelligence. More »

EA's space horror title Dead Space is trying to do things different. Which it'll have to, since anyone who's not saying it's ripping off Resident Evil will say it's ripping off BioShock (regardless of whether that's actually the case or not). One of those things, according to CVG, is that the game's developers are seriously toying with the idea of removing the player's ability to pause the action. That means no pause button, and if you pull up the inventory screen or map, you're doing it in real-time. Which I'm sure sounds great in their office think-tank when discussions of player immersion come up, but when you're halfway through a battle and nature calls? Or the phone rings? That idea starts to look less great. Damp pants aren't immersive, they're just difficult to explain. More »

Ten years ago yesterday the age of the MMO was ushered in with the release of Ultima Online. While not technically the first MMORPG, it was the first one that gained a widespread audience, paving the way for games like Everquest and World of Warcraft. In celebration of this 10 year anniversary, Electronic Arts is inviting players from the entirety of the games 10 years to return to the game for free from now until October 9th using their old username and password to experience the recent changes that came with the Kingdom Reborn makeover. The in-game celebration includes special events like a monster hunt where players can win prizes like maps of Britannia, an ahnk pendant, commemorative sculpture, or a virtue armor set. All players will also receive a wand of fireworks and 10 decor tokens, whatever those might be. Happy 10th Ultima Online! May you last another 10 years with the tiny player base you have left over! More »

In the final part of my interview with Neil Young, the EA LA studio head talks about his job, the culture of EA and the future of the industry. I was impressed with Young's take on game development and the need for gaming to think outside the box. Kotaku and EA have had a few run-ins over the past year, but Young has always been professional in his dealings with us and his ability to do a video interview says a lot about him. Oh, and he says he loves the site. More »
