For eight years, a group of modders have been working on reworking DICE's Battlefield 2 into a much more realistic and much larger-scale multiplayer shooter. In August, their journey came to an end, and the 1.0 version of their mod, Project Reality, was released. Now, the same group is working on a full game.
The team says they'd like to create the "most realistic, immersive and demanding" free multiplayer shooter with Project Reality 2. They've been using Crytek's CryEngine 3 to build PR2 from the ground up since the project's birth in mid-2012, creating three small maps for the game's upcoming small-scale internal Alpha release. Unfortunately, a public release is still "a way off", but the team plans to make up for that with regular updates on the project.
There's a few heavily work-in-progress screenshots below, with many more in the announcement post on the game's website. And, if you are feeling particularly adventurous and have a copy of BF2 lying around, you can download the original mod right here.
