Namco Bandai is readying yet another batch of downloadable planes for Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation for release tomorrow via Xbox Live, including yet another gaudy, incredibly expensive (400 MS points) IDOLM@STER model and two planes that really do nothing but shoot colored missiles for show purposes. Along with those three, a cheapy Typhoon and a completely free PJ Emblem F-16C, they're also releasing a 400 point pack containing four aircraft from the Razgriz squadron of Ace Combat 5 fame. The last of the special iDOLM@STER planes for Ace Combat 6 should be dropping this week, along with several not quite as pretty but half as expensive models. This time around we have Miki Hoshii returning once again, this time emblazoned atop the Su-47 to aid in the embarrassment of any opponent you happen to down in multiplayer. Holy crap! Our favorite Japanese Xbox 360 fanboy and Famitsu writer has cut his hair again. Last we saw him he had a Halo 3 logo shaved into the side of his noggin. All this time Microsoft has been trying to use the Japanese RPG market as a way into the country, when all they needed was a little Namco Bandai arcade jet fighting action. Fueled by the success of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation as well as recent price cuts, the latest Media Create numbers show Xbox 360 sales jumping from 3,718 in the previous week to a massive 17.673 units sold. The PlayStation 3, on the other hand, saw a drop that left them with only 17,434 consoles finding homes. That makes for the sweetest 239 Xbox 360 consoles Microsoft has sold in quite some time. Of course Nintendo continues to dominate them both, with 37,617 Wiis and 78,597 DS systems, but what I want to know is who are these 319 people buying the GBA SP? The future is now, people. More »

The last two days in Japan: a cheaper Xbox 360 goes on sale, a discounted THE iDOLM@STER goes on sale, and today, Ace Combat 6 goes on sale. For a console that didn't appeal to Japanese gamers, there seems to be a lot appealing about it of late: THE iDOLM@STER has a rabid hardcore fan base, while AC6 has an across-the-board built-in audience. Releasing them bang bang, right after each other, is aggressive on Microsoft's part. Do we think that these titles will hurt the PlayStation 3 in Japan? No. The PlayStation brand is way too strong. Microsoft just sent word that people, lots of people, have downloaded the Ace Combat 6 demo. It has been downloaded a million times worldwide since the AC6 demo was released back in July and gave players a chance to test out an F-16C Fighting Falcon in the campaign's first mission "Invasion of Gracemeria." The current Xbox 360 exclusive will be out in North America on October 23rd, in Japan on November 1st and in Europe on November 23rd. It will sell many copies. More »

It's been two months since our last hands on with this 360 exclusive—and most of the initial impressions hold up. It still looks really nice. Without bothering to read any of the control mappings or recent experience with the series, it was really easy to pick up and start swooping & shooting—the controls were a bit tight for my taste, though.
