The free Epic Citadel app is the Unreal Engine 3-powered way to determine how game-capable your mobile hardware is, so Intel decided to use it to demonstrate the power of the Clover Trail+ Atom Z2580, its first dual-core smartphone system-on-a-chip.

There are three different configurations of the new Intel SOC representing three different CPU speeds—2.0 GHz (Z2580), 1.6 GHz (Z2560), 1.2 GHz (Z2520)—which should allow phone makers the sort of confusing customer options normally reserved for PC and laptop buyers, so that'll be nice. This demo, shown during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (where I am not, which makes me cry), shows off a rather smooth run through the Citadel, which is more important to me than any number of impressive technical specifications.

I love that graphics performance has become a thing for mobile phone hardware. Thanks largely to Apple, a company founded by a guy that wasn't into gaming, we've gone from shoehorning games to fit mobile phone specs to building phones for gaming over the course of the past five or six years.
