In 2011 SilverTree Media introduced Cordy, a robotic platforming hero for the smartphone age. While other developers struggled with implementing traditional games using touchscreen controls, Cordy played as perfectly as the best console platformers, with more personality than most.
Now Cordy 2 has arrived, and it's easily twice as good as the original.
Cordy is a tiny robot with a big job. In the first game he was tasked with powering up the aptly-named World 1. In Cordy Sky his journey to World 2 was sidetracked when his ship crash-landed on a sky planet, where his adventure took a vertical turn. Now he's finally made it to World 2, only to find the planet taken over by the evil Boogaloo and his army of Boogie Bots.
It's not nearly as silly as it sounds.
As he journeys across three worlds to free the people of the planet from peril, sometimes Cordy is Nintendo's Mario. He stomps on the head of his enemies, jumps from platform to platform and puts on specialized suits that grant him special powers—magnetic sliding, jet thrusters and so on. The platforming is wonderfully precise and satisfying, even though the virtual controls consist of two separate buttons for backwards and forwards movement.
Other times he's Sonic the Hedgehog, speeding through corridors propelled by pinball-like obstacles or some of his more locomotive friends. The level design here is pure perfection, flowing perfectly from one point to the next. It's a complete joy to play.
Everything I want from a platformer is right here in Cordy 2. Speed, precision, character, secrets, collectibles and bonus puzzle levels for a bit of a break from the action. Our robotic hero is selfless and unassuming—he's not a robot with an attitude, he's having a damn good time saving the world.
Cordy 2 is available as a free download on Android and iOS, which gives players a chance to try out the first four levels before committing $4.99 for the full experience. I don't imagine many will have a problem hitting the buy option when it comes up.
