Sony Says No Malware Involved in Attack on Resistance ForumsS

A Nov. 11 breach of Resistance's official web site, including its forums, did not serve malware to visitors as some had alleged, Sony told Kotaku on Friday. Sony confirmed that an intrusion did take place, resulting in MyResistance.net's immediate closure. The site remains offline as Sony works to rebuild it and close whatever hole the attackers exploited.

The outage does not affect any multiplayer features of Resistance 3 or its predecessors, though the browser-based strategy game Global Resistance has been taken down as well.

"MyResistance.net was not hosting malware," a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America told Kotaku. "The intrusion did cause a user to redirect to another site [or] sites."

"There was an intrusion on MyResistance.net which caused users to experience unexpected behavior on the site," she added. "SCEA is working as quickly as possible to fully restore the site. We are aiming to have the site back up within the next two weeks, and will let you know if this timeline changes."

Visitors to MyResistance.net complained that site served them malware on Nov. 11; the site was taken completely offline immediately and has been closed ever since. Shortly after the outage, SCEA reassured visitors that MyResistance.net does not collect credit card information.

SCEA's investigation into what happened continues, the spokeswoman said.
