Game studio Insomniac Games has created a slew of exclusive titles for the PlayStation platform. Franchises like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance are PlayStation hallmarks. The day of Insomniac making only PS games are over.
Earlier this year, Insomniac struck a partnership with Electronic Arts to make a new franchise for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. What does Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony Worldwide Studios, think?
"We grew up together," Yoshida tells Develop magazine. "Insomniac's first title was on our first platform." Insomniac Games was founded in 1994, and its first title was a first-person shooter called Disruptor for the PlayStation.
According to Yoshida, Insomniac was "very open" with Sony about its desire to expand its wings.
"They want to reach the people they haven't been able to," he added, "so it was sad to hear a couple of years ago what their intent was, but as we are growing, Insomniac is growing too." The studio is hiring to expand its development staff.
"And the studio has its own ambition, so I totally understand," says Yoshida, "and I am very happy how they approached the announcement. They made sure that people know they are still working with us."
"When you think about it, Insomniac is making multiplatform games," he adds. "So PS3 owners should be happy because they are getting more Insomniac games as the studio hires more staff to develop more games." Yoshida's right: This is win-win for everyone.
