Perilar

Perilar - Ultima-esque Turn-based iPhone RPG

!'ve said it before (although possibly not in public) and I'll say it again - turn-based games are a natural fit for mobile gaming. Any gaming device that you have to slip quickly in your pocket in case you get mugged demands a stable of games that you can take at whatever pace you like.

Perilar is a nostalgic nod back to the early Ultima games, without which we would arguably not have Fallout 3, Ultima Online and Richard Garriot being sick all over a cosmonaut. Turn-based RPG adventuring, quests, leveling up, the whole kit and kaboodle.

The iPhone bereft need not despair - Perilar is a conversion of a freeware Java game - JPerilar - still available for download here. If only there was a decent Java VM for the iPhone you could save yourself $5.

Otomedius Gorgeous! Our TGS Boob Shootin' Fix

Otomedius, Konami's attempt to lure the masses back to Gradius-style sidescrolling shooting, was on hand at this week's Tokyo Game Show, coming home as Otomedius Gorgeous! for the Xbox 360. What Otomedius Gorgeous! brings to the table, a concept only briefly explored in titles like Parodius and Sexy Parodius, is boobs. Impossibly perky, voluminous cartoon boobs.

Otomedius Gorgeous! is part of the cute-em-up sub-genre, full of missile launching penguins, deadly flying fish, super-deformed space ships and, most relevant to gamers' interests, the adorable anime girls who pilot each ship.

Justify Your Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

If anything, we're now guilty of giving too much direction on justifying one's game. Rare's Neill Harrison took advantage of our goodwill, which is letting developers and producers prep ahead of time for Justify Your Game, resulting in carefully planned elevator pitches. For Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Harrison pretty much nails it following a minutes long mental practice. If it weren't for the last second awkwardness, this one would've been left on the cutting room floor. Thank the video gods for performance anxiety!

No Movie Sharing At NXE Launch

One potentially cool feature of Microsoft's much trumpeted New Xbox Experience dashboard revamp was the ability to share your NetFlix movies with other gamers.

Up to eight people could watch a streamed NetFlix flick and share photos via slideshows.

Not any more. The feature has been pulled from the launch release of the NXE, although Microsoft are hopeful that it will return at a later date.

Photo sharing is still a goer though, which is something.

A Proposal Of Marriage... via LBP

A gamer known only as DimmuJed used LBP's level creation tool to propose to his girlfriend.

The actual proposal bit comes surprisingly early on - the guy can't resist tearing around the hearts and flowers-themed level racking up a (possibly symbolic) high score.

Not shown - her elaborate Unreal Tournament mod explaining that she isn't sure if she is ready for that level of commitment and would like some time on her own to think.

BlizzCon 2008

World Of Warcraft: The Bean Bag Game

The foks at J!nx are absolutely brilliant. Wanting to bring something other than hats, shirts, and gurgling murlocs to the BlizzCon 2008 party, they've come up with a way to combine all the competition of a PVP arena with the carnival fun of tossing bean bags through holes, the J!nx PVP Arena. While I had missed it on Friday due to swarms of murloc-hungry fans, late Saturday night I got a chance to try my hand at an extremely entertaining way to play World of Warcraft without technically playing World of Warcraft.

Here's how it works. Basically you have two targets, side by side, each with a large hole in the center (1 point) and a smaller hole near the top (2 points). Teams of two players take turns throwing a set number of bean bags through the holes, after which hits are calculated and a winner is declared. So how is this World of Warcraft?

While PS3, PS2, PSP and Xbox 360 owners are going to be able to experience the joys of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 come this November, Wii owners are going to have to wait a little longer. Don't fret though, because the guys at Konami are cooking something special for you. Other than getting some beefed up AI the Wii version will sport the 'point and click' interface that'll allow you to control your player as well as the teammates around him. The Wii version of the game should be hitting stores sometime in Spring 2009. Screens after the jump. More »
