Thompson Sanctions Hearing Set For June 4

The Florida Supreme Court will hold a hearing June 4 to consider possible disciplinary action against Miami attorney Jack Thompson, including sanctions. The Florida Bar is seeking to disbar Thompson, removing his ability to practice law in the state of Florida.

As we reported on May 20th, Judge Dava Tunis, who presided over Miami attorney Jack Thompson's Bar trial, recently recommended to the Florida Supreme Court that he be found guilty on 27 of 31 charges of professional misconduct. Of the 27 recommendations of guilt, twenty-one are from a suit related to Grand Theft Auto and four are from an attempt by Thompson to have Rockstar's Bully declared a public nuisance.

The next step is for the Florida Supreme Court to rule on Judge Tunis' recommendations, though the Court told us it doesn't issue estimations on when rulings will be handed down.

At the closing of the Bar trial, Thompson had argued he's being unfairly persecuted for his religion:

GamePolitics obtained court transcripts of Thompson's closing argument to the court, in which he said, "I'm simply making the argument, Judge, that my motivations - which I have tried to make clear, maybe to the point of nausea - are religious and that my efforts against the distribution of adult material, pornographic material, violent material, adult rated material to children is violative of the law as well as violative of Scripture."

Thompson also said that disbarring him would not stop these "efforts":

"If I am disbarred, which is the wish of these [Florida Bar] people... I will continue to do what I'm doing on these issues whether they disbar me or not because this is what I was called to do, this is what I was enabled to do more effectively as a lawyer."

  • Isn't that pic just a little NSFW for the front page?

  • Christ compels you!

  • Uh, I dunno... if he's a practicing Christian (whatever sect), I'm sure those nasty e-mails he's written over the years secure him some place in Hell.

Still, I'd love for him to keep doing what he's doing because he's so entertaining.

  • His closing statement makes me juckle.

"Disbar me, see if I care! I'm not going to stop. I'm obviously neither taken seriously nor take my status seriously as a lawyer, so taking it away will change NOTHING!

    NOOOOOOTHIINNGGGG!"

    Oh silly Jackie boy.

  • I bet you tomorrows Penny Arcade will be about this story...can't wait lol.

  • @karasu is my homeboy: chuckle* not juckle.

I was juggling while I chuckled reading this so obviously there was room for some confusion. I apologize.

  • He never understood the whole seperation of law and religion. There can be a comingling of the two but not the way he's doing it. He's stating things from a religious point of view and hammering everyone in place using the wrong laws as the hammer.

Oh, and the daily business review has a copy of the loyalty oath transcript that John Bruce didn't want anyone to see. Basically closing the case with no issues.

  • He will probably continue being on Fox News, as well as a few other instances, but overall his annoying tactics are coming to an end.

  • Let us wait and see what happens with his trial.

Hopefully keelhaul him. Thats what I hope anyway. But being disbarred will be good enough for me.

  • He's one of the dirty lawyers from Vice City. The games....they made me do it....they're evil!

    Karma's such a bitch

    Yeaaa.......

Get him right in the Thompsons.

  • JT is probably going to blame the misconduct charges on the murder-simulating video games he was exposed to.

  • He isnt a very photogenic bastard is he?

  • @karasu is my homeboy: He of course did not actually say this. Those quotes are for parody purposes based off of his actual closing statement where he would continue no matter what.

    ...

    :D

  • @karasu is my homeboy: that's talent right there!

I don't like how he is bringing christianity into it. Lying and misrepresenting things in order to push one's own agenda is not exactly scriptural either, John. No matter how just you think the cause is.

He treats his religion as if it were a badge granting diplomatic immunity like the dude from Lethal Weapon 2. It's not freedom to do as you please, Thompson.

  • Is gamepolitics still down?

  • I'm still curious at to whether Glenn Beck and Co. ever substantiated the claims of rape in GTA 4.

Or "points" for driving by the PTC I think?

  • This is great. The first week of June will mean not only JT being (likely) disbarred and disgraced for his flippant ways, but also the release of Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition.

Truly a great week in geek history.

  • I love when people think that believing in a religion puts them above the law.

The invisible pink unicorn encourages me to steal shit. Where's my immunity?

  • Which religion does he claim to practise, exactly? Douchebagism?

My dad is a Seventh-Day Adventist, and the rest of my family are Catholic... though most of us Catholics don't really listen to Cathol all that much. Nevertheless, my point is that I think JT is claiming to represent the interests of Christians, but I can say that nobody in my family is a doik.

JT can just kiss my Thompsons, for all I care.

  • huh.

i thought he was just an as who was ignorant of the subject matter.

    guess hes just crazy.

    Or playing a card.

  • @karasu is my homeboy:
Explaining your own joke and repeatedly replying to yourself...

this internet thing, you must be new to it?

  • I just hope he's not made into a martyr.

  • So he's on a religious crusade.....gotta love a man who uses religion just to get away or out of things.

  • "At the closing of the Bar trial, Thompson had argued he's being unfairly persecuted for his religion:"

I hate that kind of crap. People crying persecution because of their religion. Trying to be martyrs.

Tell him to go nail himself to a cross.

  • @Bissrok:

Sorry, but we have to grant you tax exempt status before that.

  • I say we get some torches, some axes, a few pitch-forks, and go a' huntin' for ol' Thompson.

  • Scapegoating douchebaggery is certainly not a religion. Could be a union, but a religion? Certainly not.
I hope he gets disbarred so any of his "efforts" are no longer received as the work of a lawyer, but rather for what they are: an old coot's ramblings about THOSE DAMN KIDS ON THEIR DAMN SKATEBOARDS.

  • @Crawl to China:

Michael Moore has made an entire career out of lying and misrepresenting things to push his own agenda. Why can't Thompson also??? ;)

  • Image of megaStryke megaStryke at 01:37 PM on 05/22/08 *

In other news, June 4 is my birthday. This is greatest birthday gift I will ever receive.

  • He gives Christians like me a bad name. Though his 'intentions' are noble on the surface I

  • @Eville1: The whole idea behind having a separation of Church and of State is that so no one group's ideas about this or that will affect litegation governing how one should behave, but so that we can still have a common set of values that we, as a society can all agree on (eg: don't kill people or steal shit.)

Not everyone is Christian; not everyone is a Pagan... not everyone is religious at all, sometimes. If we had a law that stated that everyone should stay home from sundown on Friday, and not do any work, nor ask anyone to do work for you, until sundown on Saturday (practicing the Sabbath), a lot of people would be upset, save for the few really strict Jews or Christians. While they constitute a significant portion of the overall Western population, they by no means represent everyone's values or beliefs.

I don't intend to make you sound like you dunno why we have separation of Church and State, but in case, that's my take on it.

  • @Roto13: And it's usually the religious majority (ie christians) That shout about persecution the loudest the minute ANYONE speaks out against them. Keep in mind this is after they've already lectured EVERYONE else on why they're bad, or their religion is bad.

  • @Eville1: Fuck me, I'm an idiot.. I just read that you meant HE didn't know why there's a separation. Sorry!!!! :)

  • @PlayerX:

Um..I never said I didn't know why. I was saying HE didn't. I'm a HUGE proponent of seperation of church and state trust me.

  • So when will I see the Kotaku post suggesting that we pit Thompson against Uwe (OOO-VEH) Boole?

Seems like a simple solution to both problems.

  • @PlayerX:
    Cheers :) No worries.

  • @crescentfresh:

Michael Moore gets away with it because there's a huge demographic that basically NEEDS to agree with whatever Michael Moore says. They don't care if he's lying - they just like that he can spin it so it works for them.

Thompson, on the other hand, has a very, very small following (real followers), but most people see him as a joke. That's why he's so funny.

  • Wait a second, isn't it illegal to try mentally handicapped people in court?

    No, sorry, that's executing them.

Well, maybe not even in Florida.

  • He gives Christians like me a bad name. Though his 'intentions' seem noble, I can't help but feel that he's abusing what he believes to be his calling. He's bound to know that mere men can't stop sin from happening. Its a futile effort that he seems aggressively partaking in trying to destroy. What happened to 'love thy neighbour as you love thyself' and 'dont hate the sinner, hate the sin'?

Fair enough Jesus wouldn't condone violence or debauchery, but I don't think he'd be stupid enough to single out something so trivial as a videogame. Theres far more rubbish in the world to be annoyed at than a game.

  • Lol. This guy is still trying. Truth be told I think he sticks to video games simply because he sees an outlet as a way to have his name well known over the U.S. He wants to be popular, because with popularity generally comes more money. He is one of the people who are vigorously hanging to video games as his outlet into the mainstream.

The thing is, however, it just doesn't seem to be working. I dont think video games are looked at by the media seriously enough to go on about them for tremendous periods of time. Sure GTA and the like will get much talk time on our local news stations but its simply because its a "good story" to cover a time slot. Something to get the media talking, watching.

"...this is what I was enabled to do more effectively as a lawyer."

Why did he say this when he knew he was about to be disabled from doing it effectively because he's going to lose his status as a lawyer? Even his closing statement shows how poorly he can construct a sentence that actually makes sense.

  • i don't know why everyone hates him so much. he's just trying to ensure that the United States operates in a manner he agrees with, making it illegal to peddle products that he personally doesn't enjoy. look out, ranch doritos! you're next!

on a elated note, i hate hospital dramas. time to get a license to practice law and abuse it.

  • Sweet, where can I buy tickets? Someone should livestream the trial. Kotaku? G4? Court TV? C'mon, people, jump on this!

  • Well, I cannot curse the man for following his convictions, but I will do so for the means by which he followed those convictions. He's misrepresented many things, and gone as far as to tell people that they're lying when they question his thesis statements.

I don't want the guy to get in too much trouble (even if I would like him off the bar), but at the same time, he really needed to question some of the things he was saying.

  • I wish Jack would realize he isn't being persecuted for his religion, but because he is an unprofessional lawyer. There were rules he agreed to with the Florida Bar when he became a lawyer, he broke them.

His religion may be his motivation for doing what he is doing, but not once have I ever seen it come up as part of the argument against him.

If he wants to be a lawyer to help push his agenda, so be it (he basically states that above). He shouldn't however be surprised when his conduct bites him in the ass. His possibility of being disbarred doesn't affect his religious beliefs in the slightest.

It must be nice to live in his world where everything is either black or white.

  • @kingmanic: Well, juckle was a typo so I needed to clear that up.

And then I realize that Thompson and Kotaku have some legal history with a commentor situation so I thought I'd be safe.

Never hurts to be safe. But thanks for making me add another comment in this thread.

  • "...my efforts against the distribution of adult material, pornographic material, violent material, adult rated material to children is violative of the law..."

Wow, thanks JT, couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Didn't GamePolitics do the reporting, not Kotaku?

  • @dunetiger : one of the naerds: Micheal Moore takes a kernel of truth and then lies, distorts and exaggerates it into a slickly packaged exaggerated story. Jack Thompson takes a lie, and spins it for all it's worth using every logical fallacy he can think of to expound a point. While the general conclusions Moore reaches are too cut and dried he does have a point while Thompson doesn't have much of a point.

films like Sicko exaggerate but there is a problem in the US with the health care system (bloated and more expensive then virtually any public system). Gun laws (Guns don't kill people, social inequality leading to gun crime does. Gun control likely isn't the answer but neither is rampant gun ownership). Youth (Most parents don't know what their kids like or what their kids do). You may dislike the man and a lot of the far left who worship him but it doesn't invalidate all his points. He had some valid points. Thompson has none.

  • What religion is he being persecuted for? Mr. Thompson finds new ways to amaze me!
