According to Yahtzee we are just now slipping into the Summer gaming drought, so rather than struggle to find a more recent game to review he's gone and dug out 2004's Painkiller, one of the best FPS games ever for folks that just want to kill some monsters. As Yahtzee points out, Painkiller not only lets you kill tons of bad guys, it also lets you do it in some very creative ways.
I'd actually like to see him review more old games. By the time he gets to the newer titles I've already paid, played, and weighed them. The retrospectives have nostalgia on their side, reminding me of a time when I didn't feel I absolutely had to play everything that came out.

I wish more games were just mindless killing.
Speaking of which...when can we ever expect a Zombie Revenge sequel!?
Id loooove to see Yatzee retrospecting SNES games...
I hope he does more retrospectives too and remind me of some other games I meant to go back to. Plus he's bang on about the penis gun. It gives you wood so whats not to love?
I wish we talked more about past games in general. All this hype about the next biggest game just builds too high of expectations and causes me to want to constantly jump onto the next "best" thing.
I'd love to see retrospectives of games that have came out and were big successes instead of wasting time getting all excited about games that haven't come out yet...like how Assassin's Creed was treated.
Those who are only hearing of this now would do well to search youtube or something similar for the boss fights (don't worry, there's not a whole lot of story going on in those fights). That was good enough alone for me to try to find this.
Very enjoyable, so does this mean he's not going to do a review on mario kart wii?
Awesome. The animations were some of my favorite. I never even heard of this game, but I'll definitely look out for it now.
I loved that game. Watching this makes me want to dig it out of closet and have another go at it.
@PAULINK:
I have a feeling it wouldn't be much different then the SSBB review.
Ah Painkiller. My roomie is absolutely daft for this game. He plays it nightly for the exact same reasons Yahtzee describes. Shurikens and lightening.
I prefer the stake gun myself.
speaking of mindless killing, when the hell are they gonna make Dead Rising 2? Capcom needs to get on that pronto
He's back to form. I lolled at probably his first four or five reviews and then they just became a constant smile and a inwardly spoken "Oh, that Yahtzee-- He's so adorable".
I lolled at this one. Hard. May be some evidence that he actually is starting to slip if his little note at the end that he had recorded this eight months ago was real.
And the bit about how continuing to mention Mario Kart only strengthens his resolve made me lol, too.
Excellent choice of music, that would have well suited the Samba de Amigo commercial !
People Can Fly also ported Gears of War to PC. It's got their name right on the box. I believe Epic games actually bought them.
Nice. I actually went and Wiki'd up Painkiller just to read some more info about the game.
@Hickeroar: According to Wiki, Epic bought a majority amount of stock in the company, and made them do all the fun porting of GoW to PC. So yeah, if Epic thinks they're cool, well who are you to argue, right?
after watching this, it does make me want to play it...
There are so many games that get passed up because there is something "better" at the time to play...
@Shiryu: Because there's not already enough people on the internet who do that?
Ah. Painkiller. I think this game is what God Of War would be as a shooter. I mean, with no regard to the storyline.
Hopefully we'll get some more of these, especially if his mentioning of MGS4 is a nod to what new game he'll review next.
But good stuff nonetheless.
@PAULINK:
Check out his site. His first adjective with regards to the game starts with "F" and doesn't end well.
@PAULINK: He might if you ask him to ;-)
I do believe this was the greatest review Yahtzee has done. I've never even played that game and I think it's fucking awesome. It has a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning and he called Americans fat. What more could I ask for?
Not one of his better ones, but still, a mediocre Yahtzee is still better than 90% of other reviewers. Wiki says the game had an XBox port. I'll have to see if I can find it.
Thats it, im reinstalling it.
I love Painkiller. The controls are the smoothest you can find. Multiplayer kicks ass, I'm still wondering why no one's playing it.
@Beelzebozo: It did. With a few additions to it. It was ok I suppose. One of those meh things that makes you think, "Well, my pc is better now than when Painkiller came out just by the new standards. My new EleventybillionawesomeGtX1293SLIRaper2 graphics card makes Painkiller look like God's Vagina. Why play it on Xbox now?
@muscrat_01:I thought I was the only one who had to reinstall this after hearing about it again.
I could stand to shoot some shurikens and lightning and impale people on walls with tree trunks about now...
funny AND informative!! I'm going to check Painkiller out now, I hope Yathzee does another retro review next week, I'd like to see one of Killer 7 perhaps cause he loves it so much...
A GUN THAT SHOOTS SHURIKENS AND LIGHTING, WHY THE FUCK WASN'T IT ADVERTISED THAT WAY!
Now I pray that Yathzee reviews a Final Fantasy game, he ripped 360 fanboys a new one with the halo review, absolutly stomped on Nintendo fanboys dreams with the Brawl review, lets see how the Sony fanboys like seeing Final Fantasy kerbstomped into the ground by the mighty Yathzee
Fits my take on it. I only stopped playing because when it came out, my PC would slow to a thick murky crawl (but not really go choppy, go figure) every time I was mobbed. Knowing this game that was all the time, so it was unplayable.
Other than that it was like Serious Sam with actual unified design concepts instead of random dice-rolling enemies. SS always seemed a bit too disjointed for me as awesome as it looked.
Yahtzee should be happy that there's a whole expansion for Painkiller out too.
I played this game through when it was released - don't remember much about it other than it was quite fun and quite creepy...and there is a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning >:]
Watched this one yesterday, still gives me lulz.
More retrospectives, less popular games plz!
He should've ended the video with "Painkiller" by Judas Priest.
Love Painkiller, and I'll probably get the sequel sometime.
Well after watching this I feel compelled to go and track a copy down. It's £5 on Steam, so I'm as happy as a clam that has £5 to blow on a game.
Yes, this review is what I like about ZP! The pics matched my minds every time
(Penis gun shooting trees^^)
What I really DONT want ZP to review is ANY Nintendo Franchise Game - and Final Fantasy. Those are games that are made with fan(boy)s in mind. And he just doesn't seem like he is a Nintendo fan (SSBB review anyone?) ... In case of Final Fantasy.. he MAY like it some way or another, but I have doubts...
So please stop telling him to review Mario Kart Wii, whoever you are!
Back to Painkiller: I think the demo of the game (was ist an early alpha?) was better in gameplay, because you could activate slow motion (for the enemies), shoot enemies with your mighty penis extension, run behind them an watch what the physics of the game made with the enemies - lotsa fun!
@excel_excel: he always insists he doesn't like J-RPGs, so it's not likely he'll sit down with one long enough to review it.
Pfft. About time Painkiller gets any kind of recognition.
@PiWi: Not exactly.. he's reviews on Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario were good.. and he already said that he loves Earthbound. He would never review any FF since he already said that he hate japanese RPGs (with the exception of Earthbound and Paper Mario). On the SSBB review he said that he doesn't like fighting games and he was being hammered by fanboys to review the game.. :P
@noliferuin (PSN): I know but he doesn't like fighting games as was said by CockroachMan and come on it'd be fucking awesome!
@Tons Of Fun: Computer Gaming World named it Shooter of the Year in 04. Penny Arcade did a series of comics for them and promoted them through their website.
If people don't know about this game, it's due to their own PC ignorance
@PiWi: He enjoyed Galaxy (calling it fun, which is good coming from Yathzee) and he loved the Paper Mario games and too loved Super Paper Mario
And I'm buying Painkiller after that.. love mindless killing games like DOOM. And the game is 10 bucks on steam!
I feel like downloading the demo again. It's sad that I haven't bought the game yet, it's in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart.
I really enjoy Yahtzee's retro reviews of games he enjoys like this one and Psychonauts. I don't see why other people can't enjoy them as he still manages to point out their flaws and have fun with the review.
I'd really love an Earthbound review. I'm sure he'd just go nuts with it.
it baffles me how many people here never heard of Painkiller prior to ZP... even I already knew it... not that I'm making fun or anything, it's I'm usually the last in the know =/
Something perhaps to make note of (or not)...after the review, the game is now on Steam's top seller list. I don't think that this game has made it to that list since its debut on Steam. I can't think of any other reason for it to be on now (other than it being a good game) other than being influenced by Yahtzee's review. Interesting, if nothing else.
@PiWi: I may not have asked him to review MKW, but I sure as hell would like to listen to it. I am a fanboy, I do enjoy the games… but damn if he isn't funny while disemboweling them!
If Painkiller was on consoles and retained it's stellar control and physics it'd get a lot more recognition that it currently has, maybe even something resembling marketing!
Don't get me wrong, I'm a console man born and bread but it's these Serious Sam-esqe shooters that make me wish i had a computer that could handle Painkiller again...
And the Y man never disappoints. We need an old AND horrible review from him, or just him lynching EA sports franchise games.
Valve is now advertising "Painkiller" on the front page of STEAM.
Perfect capitalization on Yahtzee's review, they advertise it as "Includes guns that shoot Shurikens and lightning!"
i love that message at the end of the video,
"keep going on about mario kart mother fuckers, it only strenthens my resolve"
lol
@darthnader: It's amazing what a following this idiot has.
HUR HUR shurikens and lightning are sooo cool! They totally make up for any cons that this game could possibly have! Please...
It's weird, every single game he professes to love I would have pegged him as absolutely despising. COD4 and Painkiller being amongst them.
Painkiller was the first FPS I never beat after buying. COD4 was the first one I wish I hadn't.
@Dakobah: God did people not learn their lesson with Brawl! Don't get Yathzee review games you like! Unless you want them to be ripped to piss, in which case I'd fucking love him to do MKWii
