  • ....oh

  • I hope they'll take a cue and add back the strategy of the non Orochi titles. This is the reason I didn't really like Orochi.

    Hey, they could also add some characters from Blademaster; that would certainly rock!

    A lot of people don't like the Warriors games, but as a long-time fan, and one who just picked up the PSP version of Orochi, this is good news for me.

    Besides, it adds a whole bunch of awesome new characters, like Minamoto Yoshitsune from the Heian period, and Son Wukong, the Monkey King. I'll be waiting for this one, and its inevitable ~6.0 "IT'S NOT INNOVATIVE ENOUGH" bullshit reviews.

  • I thought the game was pretty cool... but... come one guys, it took this long to sell a million? Why not just work on some DLC for Dynasty Warriors 6? There are like 20 characters in that who need a story mode!

  • Also; no info on if they intend to use the DW 5 or DW 6 engine?

  • the dead horse it just keeps getting beaten by a stick.

    @Guizzy:
    Game's already out in Japan, actually. No Bladestorm characters, although I will agree that's a good idea.

    The new characters are:
    Yoshitsune Minamoto (a hero from early Japanese history, uses a lightsaber)
    Kiyomori Taira (Yoshitsune's rival, looks to use a chain of prayer beads)
    Son Wukong (the Monkey King and inspiration for Goku)
    Taigong Wang (ancient Chinese strategist)
    Himiko (some ancient Chinese shaman queen)

    And then Fu Xi and Nu Wa from DW3 are back, as well as all of the new characters added in Samurai Warriors 2 XL. It's a big, big game, that's for sure.

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:10 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @Guizzy:
    And yeah, it still uses that hybrid DW5/SW2 engine from the original game. I think enough people were put off from the DW6 engine that that's probably the only time we're going to ever see it.

  • The Dynasty warrior games were just a game to button mash for me. LIke when i don't feel like playing shooters or RPGs or Puzzle games and just wanan run around emitting sound that stops enemies in their tracks. I still like the games, just not Good games. lol

  • Cool.

    Though I'd rather see Samurai Warriors 3.

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:12 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @what the Ph15h?:
    Well, the games are good at what they do, which is mindless hack and slash with a loose grounding in actual history. If you take them for what they are and don't expect ground-breaking innovation, your purchase will be justified every time. Simple enough, and I don't know why reviewers don't get it.

  • Awesome. I can't wait to play as Go... the Monkey King.

  • What? Not available for PS3? That seems like a really strange idea.

  • To quote Lu Bu from the first one:

    "I WILL ENJOY THIS!"

  • I loved the original. From what I've seen at [koeiwarriors.co.uk] they are adding all the new characters from Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends and several new original characters having to do with Chinese and Japanese mythology. Fu Xi and Nu Wa are returning! I love these games. XD

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:18 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @bangbangblah:
    There's already a PS2 version due out, I'm assuming they figure that most people with PS3s who would BUY a Warriors game have the 60 or 80GB and don't deem it worth doing a PS3 port.

    The only reason they're doing a 360 version at all is because of the American audience. The 360 version of SW2 took almost a year to come out, and SW2 XL isn't ever coming to Japanese 360s. It's basically an afterthought, the real game is always on PS2.

    Maybe when the SW and Orochi games move on to using the next-gen engines, we'll see a PS3 one.

  • Dammit! People, stop buying these damn Koei games! Grrr...

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:21 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @HaydenTenno:
    I'll stop buying Koei games when people stop buying FPS games . :D

  • Mm, mmm. My friends and I loved the first Orochi game. No doubt we will be all over the sequel too.

  • @HaydenTenno:
    They're fun.

    dear mr mike fahey:

    you just missed a pretty epic opportunity to link this article re: orochi and the whole "warriors" series :(

  • Image of 108 108 at 12:25 PM on 05/21/08 *

    and holy shit, that press release is liquid terrorism

  • I love these games!!!!!!!!

  • @108: Cool, it's Tim Rogers :) Your website is awesome and makes me think about games in way I don't really think about because, for the most part, I'm a game-playing drone.

    --------

    *actual post*

    The games are alright...can't see how alot of people like these game to the point of buying all of them, but power to the consumer I guess.

  • Loved the first Warriors Orochi so I'm definitely looking forward to this one.
    But seriously, everyone knows it's a mindless hack and slash series so why complain about it being a mindless hack and slash game if you don't like it? weird people...

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:41 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @108:
    That article does present an interesting viewpoint. It is always interesting to try and figure out what's going through Koei's heads when it comes to these games, as they manage to do very little in the way of innovation but people still eat them up like candy. Hell, I do it myself.

    It is slightly inaccurate in a few ways, though. The character switching mechanic is actually less sophisticated than mentioned, it's more like the switch mechanic from Marvel vs. Capcom than anything else, actually. The computer doesn't control your other two characters, they just...aren't on the battlefield when you're not using them, which is a little odd. But maybe that's for the best, as AI-controlled partners suck 99.99999999999% of the time. In every game.

  • Could never get into the Warriors Orochi games. The other ones are great of course, just something about the way the orochi games are that I can't get into. Loved DW6 btw.

  • @Archaotic: Oh, it's a shame. Although I am more confortable with the DW5 engine, with some tweaking the DW6 engine could really become something. I particularly enjoyed how it better integrated the objective-based maps of the main series with the base-taking of the Empires games. And the refinement to the mechanics of taking a base.

    @what the Ph15h?: In my opinion, if one series of game is misunderstood, DW/SW is it.

    Sure, on the surface it seems like a mindless slash-fest, with your character cutting through most on the battlefield with no effort, but there's some pretty deep strategy beneath that layer, especially if you raise the difficulty level a bit. It mainly comes from the fact that while your character is quite easily capable of doing most tasks, he cannot be everywhere at once. You can follow the main conflict and advance slowly with your allies, but can you guarantee you'll be able to go back quickly enough if an enemy sneaks to your base camp? If you leave your allies to fight without helping them directly, it is likely that at one point or another they will become in danger; can you afford to leave them die, letting your enemies march on to your base camp. Or maybe you would rather chance yourself in a mad dash to the enemy base camp, where you'll be likely out-manned and ganged on, but if you concentrate all your efforts on the general you might have a shot at an early victory.

    It's always a balancing act, one that's unfortunately disregarded by most.

  • PS2 but not PS3? what gives?

  • @cio: Well... It's probably going to be compatible with the PS3, and considering the 360 and PS2 versions of the other games with the DW5 engine are pretty much the same, it'd be silly for them to release it twice.

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 12:48 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @Guizzy:
    Oh, for sure, the stage mechanics in DW6 were awesome. So much new stuff, so much more depth, it was almost Samurai Warriors 2 level. But the combat system...ugh. It was painful. DW: Gundam had a better battle system. If there's anything they need to fix, it's bringing the combo system back towards SW2's.

    And get rid of all the cloned movesets. I don't mind the new character designs, but there's no excuse to cut out six characters and reduce half the cast to Free Mode only characters who use movesets ripped off from the other members of the cast.

  • @Archaotic: I totally agree; the fight didn't feel solid at all. The characters were dancing around too much, it was hard to simply concentrate on one enemy in front of you. In a way, that made it more about beating the masses of weaklings (the button-mashing part) than dueling with officers (the fighting game part). What I really liked though was how sometimes the game would switch into an actual duel (almost like DW4's duels), with the soldiers making a circle around you and the officer (and pushing you back in if you get too close to the edges). Very cool.

  • They probably saw sales of dynasty warriors on the PS3 was negligible so they decided that at this point, it's much more profitable to release on the PS2 and 360.

  • The Warrior games were great at first, but they are becoming harder and harder to look at with every iteration. I love the mindless the hack-n-slash. But please, these games are about 5 years behind the competition graphically.

  • To everyone who says this game sucks,

    You probably bought it along with the rest of the 1.5 million and don't want to admit you had fun for once off your soapbox.

    Sincerely,
    Person who is awaiting WO2

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 01:29 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @mcool93:
    The 360 versions don't sell worth crap either. Their sales are so negligible that the 360 versions often don't even come out in Japan at all. While DW6 sold vastly more on PS3 than on 360, Warriors games always, always always dominate on PS2.

    I think the sole reason we're not getting a PS3 version is because, as stated before, the game is already out on the PS2, running on a PS2 engine. Porting it up to PS3 has no benefits whatsoever, especially when you consider the fact that PS3 owners can play it anyways.

  • I need more Dynasty Warrior Gundam

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 01:41 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @Ruisu:
    I will admit, I'm surprised a sequel to that hasn't come out, considering how successful the original was. I mean, hell. When the game came out in Japan, it started the first PS3 console sales spike.

    Then it came out on PS2 later. Either way, we need DW: Gundam 2, with more Gundams, especially more Wing Gundams. Make it happen, Koei.

  • Good it'll be on X360. I'll likely sell off my PS2 Warriors games at this point to get WO2. It has all the characters...from both games.

    The only reason I'd keep DW5 at this oint is the CAW that the XL version provided.

  • What I'd prefer to see is one single, original line of these games instead of a million branches and mini-sequels. Then add in online components that have been missing for years. Online multiplayer co-op for starters. I also have a vision in my head of 8 vs 8 modes.

    I remember reading about KOEI opening up a US branch to create North American products, and the idea that popped in my mind and has stayed is a game that may as well be called Colonial Warriors, or Dynasty Warriors 1776. Choose from any number of Revolutionary War heroes! Just watch. It'll happen. If not then they'll do something Europe-related like the Holy Wars or something.

  • Image of Archaotic Archaotic at 02:04 PM on 05/21/08 *

    @noelix:
    They did do Bladestorm, which featured the Hundred Years' War, if you remember. I would say that's probably the closest you'll get to Colonial Warriors, as after that, firearms entered into the equation.

    And a DW game where every single character uses guns would suck. Let Magoichi stay unique!

  • I've always loved the warriors games. Yeah, a lot of it is button mashing, but that's really on a local level. You can button mash all you want, but if you don't mash in the right part of the map, it's game over pretty quick.

    Samurai Warriors added a lot of strategy to the game by adding trigger points. Complete a task, and the battle changes. Suddenly you have catapults to your advantage, or the task force set fire to the enemy base camp.

    But my favorite part of the whole thing is the coop. Let's face it, throw coop into any mediocre game, and you get something that is hours worth of fun.

  • I just had a crazy good thought.

    Son Wukong vs Toyotomi

    ...

    This must happen!

  • Most likely they won't include the CaW mode in WO2. I missed that feature in DW3.

  • @TwilightSea: You mean 4.

    Anyway, despite what the idiots at IGN and GI say, the Warriors games are still fun to the people who find them fun, such as myself. I'm happy the Sequel is getting brought over. Hopefully it gives every character a chance to shine.

  • I enjoyed Orochi. I mean I enjoyed it a lot.

    So much that I forgot to send it back to Gamefly.

    I should probably just pay for it so that I can get new games to play.

  • WO2, yes please. It'll wipe off the terrible taste in my mouth after DW6.

  • First day purchase for me, just like the original and DW6. I love these games

  • I'd rather have a nice PC port of DW Gundam (or an English version of the PS2 port), but this is good too.

  • @Archaotic:

    I know you're sad since it's not coming out on the PS3 (just like you're probably saying and defending the same thing for Crash not coming out for PS3), but they must have their own reasons. I agree that DW6 sold like crap on both consoles but it probably sold more in America on the 360, and Koei knows that PS2 games aren't selling much these days anyway + PS3 games are more expensive to produce to warrant a release on the PS3. In Japan and Europe, they can still count on the PS2 softwares to do some miracles while in America, most Warriors fan moved on to the next generation console.

  • OH thank GOD i have the japanese version. It's really hard, but we've been able to discern most of the game and it's really awsome.

    Better than DW 6 because no characters were taken out, and they still had their own custom weapons :) and with the addition of the orochi side, this game is butt tons of awsome
