Too Human Arrives In August, Officially

Silicon Knights' epically developed third person action game Too Human finally has an official date. A fact sheet released by Microsoft this morning pegs the Xbox 360 game, a "modern take on classical Norse mythology", for an August 19 release. We have new media, including video and screen shots of Too Human's co-op multiplayer mode, coming right up.

  • "modern take on classical Norse mythology"

    hmmmm.....

  • Still dubious about this one. For all the hype and craze around its rethink and turn-around, I'm still not sold on the gameplay. Story looks decent, though.

I remember when the coolest thing they could talk about in a recent video was how innovative they are by introducing "chests" that you can "loot" to get new "gear."

If you've been developing a game and after however many years this is one of your strong selling points, you're in trouble.

  • Its either the Action RPG I've been waiting for, and Silicon Knights' lack of Eternal Darkness sequel is justified, or its a colossal flop and the Canadian pride I have in them is horribly misplaced.

  • I just came a little :-D

  • I have high hopes that this will turn out as good as it seems to me at the moment.

  • I've always wanted Laser Thor. For me the Norse mythology was already taken into the future in the show Stargate. The Asguard are sweeet!

    @Eroway:
Keep your pants on. =P This could be an ugly chick, err... um... game.

  • I have high hopes for this one. But I am trying to keep my passimism at bay.

  • I was excited... but its been so long. Hopefully this new information will reignite some of that anticipation.

  • Don't let it slip any further, SK... The Force Unleashed has my money in Spetember.

  • LOL..when was this first due?..was it 1999 for the playstation 1 or something like that, lets hope its been worth the wait

the story looks like its gonna be great...but i am still so-so on the gameplay

i will prolly still buy it though

  • Really hoping this game is great... really hoping.

  • Well, I can't say I'll be playing this, nor do I hope to receive this as a birthday present. I'm skeptical at best. Fail me not Ubisoft Montreal!

  • ooo i hope this game is good

  • I have yet to hear or see a signle thing that has me excited about the gameplay. The story on the other hand still intrigues me.

I expect Dyack to come along soon and tell us how this game is a great trilogy and we should love it.I'll play it,but I've never had high hopes for it.

  • Well, this game is almost certainly going to be awful, but it's nice that it's finally got a release date.

  • Too Human Arrives In August, Officially
I will believe it when I see it.

  • Are these the guys who made Eternal Darkness?

  • The downgrade from 4 player co-op to only 2 players is a major bummer :( I'll still keep an eye on it.

  • Wow, it´s finally coming out
@metallicorphan: Yep, it started as a PS1 project and then move to Gamecube, then XBox, and it's finally coming out on the X360, hey, maybe we will see Duke Nukem Forever someday...

  • With all this time in the oven it had better be great...

I have a feeling that it'll surprise us all.
    (Hopefully)

@Eroway: Don't worry.. you didn't cum a lot because I just splooged enough for the whole thread... forget a mop, I need Jenna to help clean all this up!!

Ok... sorry, a bit too much huh? NO! A BIT TOO HUMAN! *rolls eyes*

Sorry ^_^; I'm really excited here. Microsoft is attempting to such $300 from me this fall and it's scaring me to the point of hysteria :(

  • @Dr.Chocobo: Yes, and now that they have finally mined this slag out of the way maybe they can reach that vein of Eternal Darkness sequel beneath it.

  • @okenny :): Er... uhhhhh...

    *flees*

  • It's gonna suck, plain and simple.

  • I'm pumped, Dyack knows how to make games. And the guy gives his devs SWORDS, for fucks sake.

  • Norse Mythology + 4 player online co-op + sci-fi setting = sold on premise alone.

    Fuck the haters.

  • There is already too much doubt going in the gaming community on this one... they'll need to release a great demo to get the sales they really want.

  • E3 would be a great time to release more concrete info..... you hear that silicon knights?

  • @Pinhead: Yeah? Basing that on the countless hours you spent testing it i suppose?

  • @Lot Krotan: As I stated above, the co-op has been downgraded to two players (local co-op was removed too)

Interview with Denis Dyack about it: [www.co-optimus.com]

  • Too Human is similar to Haze in my eyes. Both games were once highly toted from established developers and they are now being set up for failure in the eyes of most gamers.

I had high hopes for Too Human, but I haven't been impressed with anything I've seen from it. I really hope that Silicon Knights was able to get alot done and prove all the haters wrong...

  • @Pinhead: Now now, let's give the game a chance... >_>

I don't think it'll either blow our hats off nor suck golf balls through a garden hose. My take is that the game will be average, and that will be sad.

  • Mehhhhhhh..

I'll wait for reviews.. lots of good ones.. Before i pick up this one. (this coming from the impulsive purchase person that buys almost everything)

  • @Struct09:

that sucks. Any co-op is better than no co-op though.

    @Northern Cat:

The great thing about average games is that if the content impresses the player, it is a more enjoyable experience.

I've liked bad games just because I personally found them fun to play (threads of fate, theme park ds, diddy kong racing, etc.)

  • 19 August 20?? XD

  • @Komrade_Kayce:

It does seem that way no?! It really looks like either it'll revolutionize the sction-rpg genre or suck so much that even Porn star would get deep throat envy.

I'm really on the fence on this one. On one hand. The developer diaries I've seen seem to impress on the whole character customization process. While on the other, the combat looks a bit wonky. Especially the part where the melee is controlled using the right thumbstick. Not sure if it's the whole melee, but using the thumbstick doesn't give a lot of diversity control-wise. Maybe they're going to use the triggers/bumpers as attack modifiers?!

    Anyone got any educated guesses?
    =)

  • I really don't get the hype for this game.

Despite the fancy graphics, there is nothing to indicate that this game is anything other than a repetitive, "mash this button repeatedly" type adventure through boring environments.

  • I saw the preview on G4 and this game actually looks pretty good. Some of the battles looks down right crazy and the graphic is pretty. I need a good RPG while waiting for FFXIII.

  • bout time cuz Sony has release Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and gonna be coming Resistance 2 in the time it took them to get this game out

  • Notice how it only says "August 19".

I'm sorry, but when it comes to Too human, I no longer give them the benefit of the doubt in assuming they mean this year.

    :P

  • @Lot Krotan:

I'm the same way. I actually played and finished Conan on the 360. Yes it was a bug-ridden mess. Trying too much to be a God of War clone. I really have no idea why I sludged through it...Maybe for the achievements? Or for the wicked albeit repetitive decapitations? Ah I'll just count it to me being high at the time...

  • Too Human bashers generally predicate their position on 2 premises, if they bother to provide any at all...
Premise 1 There is a long development time.
Premise 2 The game had a poor E3 showing.
Conclusion: Too Human is going to suck.
    Umm...
I'm pretty sure that's what you would call an invalid argument. (we won't even go into those who blindly flail their troll arms at any easy target)
Look. A long development cycle means nothing. There have been good and bad things released after long delays. This has been an exceptionally long cycle, but the only other comparable examples I can think of (that have been released) are Prey, and Perfect Dark Zero. The former being pretty solid game, and the latter being rather mediocre.
Now the showing at E3 was before TH was ready to be shown. SK made a mistake and showed a half-baked cake and people freaked out. If you actually LOOK at some of the recent gameplay footage the game looks pretty slick, and pretty smooth right now. Also you can see the Diabloesque elements embedded throughout.
The fact is that in order for this game to suck, Silicon Knights will have had to suddenly forget how to make excellent games. For those on the fence (as opposed to those on the poo-flinging side) Google their track record. I think you'll find it enlightening.

  • I love the set pieces and just the overall design aesthetic of the setting and the story looks good too from what we've heard of it. I put up with the less than stellar gameplay in Lost Odyssey because the story was so awesome. I think I can do the same for this game.

  • @nomadder: I find it funny that people think this game would be good despite the long development time, but then say that is the reason that Duke Nukem Forever is going to suck.

Why do some games get the benefit of the doubt and some don't?

  • @Vincent060: Because this game looks great and we've actually seen footage of it, as opposed to Duke Nukem, where all we've seen was a terrible trailer with a poop joke in it that would have looked dated 3 years ago?

  • @Vincent060: To be fair, that's the logic of random voices on the internet. We don't know that the same people saying one thing is saying the other.

I would defend that comment with the fact that the FPS world evolves so quick and dramatically that DNF being in development forever means nothing more than they continually have to create a new game from scratch every time a Halo, Bioshock, Crisis or even Gears comes out. The DNF gameplay that would have been out 4 years ago just won't cut it today. That's why that's different from an unique action RPG that's clearly kept up with the much slower evolution and times of the genre.

Anyway, Too Human has been on my radar for a while and it's going to be a buy, day 1. The things I've read and the footage I've seen pretty much convince me this will be a fun time, especially online campaign co-op. August can't come soon enough.

  • @Vincent060:

actually, a ton of people in this post have said it will suck and they lost interest because of the long dev time. There's only 2 or 3 people that actually think it's a good thing.

The long dev time isn't all SK's fault. They got shifted around to different publishers a lot, and had to start over on a bunch of different consoles. Sure, they've been working on the 360 version for a while now, but no longer than Bethesda is working on TES:V for the 720...

  • @Vincent060:

I think most people generally think that with long development time the concept just won't be viable anymore, that things changes to much and it just doesn't hold up.

It's funny though, with most things you would want a long development time to make sure everything is fleshed out properly.

But I think it's just the gamer community in general that's impatient.

  • Too bad about being limited to 2 player online co-op. I was looking forward to this game pretty much based on 4 player online. Guess I'll just have to wait for the sequel in 2013 to get 4 players.

  • @Vincent060:
Some of these fine people have already said much of what I might have.
I will add this however; many are down on both DNF and TH, but as soon as DNF has some gameplay footage, or a release date you'll start to see more defenders of that game a well.
