A List of Demands for Grand Theft Auto

Not even two weeks since its release and the ingrates at Kombo.com already have eight things they want to see in Grand Theft Auto from now on. Everyone has an ultimate GTA experience list, and I'm betting that GTA IV represents someone's wishful thinking from the Vice City days (the controls represent mine). But some of these have already been introduced.

Co-op play was kindasorta in San Andreas (albeit offline) and everyone shrugged. To fully integrate that into the main game experience seriously disrupts the at-your-own-pace narrative of what is basically a cinematic video game. Multiple cities: also San Andreas — including (technically) Liberty City. Robberies: Vice City, although I agree, I wish they had them in San Andreas and here, too.

How about a Godfather-style intimidation engine? The first two missions for Vlad were laughable — throw a brick through a window? Bump into a van? (I did it with a Blista Compact, too). God damn, those clowns would pay protection money for their seat at the Yankees game if you breathed on them hard.

One thing I do not want to see, or wouldn't use anyway, is an in-car view. I am constantly reliant on the elevated perspective of third-person driving, and always thumbing the right stick to peek before taking a corner or passing to the left on a hill. Lowering the POV and holding it inside the car would have you stuck in traffic half of the game.

  • Mandatory co-op play for a game such as GTA would fail, spectacularly. Not everyone particularly enjoys online gaming as it is, after all.

  • HA

They havent fixed the horrible driving or camera issues since the series went 3D, like theyre gonna fix this.

  • Some offline co-op or at least multiplayer wouldn't go amiss. That goes for almost all games, because it's sadly becoming less common these days.

  • I don't think it (co-op) would completely fail. I think they're doing it right with testing the water with a couple of co-op missions in the multiplayer just to see how the gta4 community latches onto it. Some would like it as some wouldn't. It's just like everything else.

  • I think they should allow offline multiplayer. I loved it on the PSP and think that they should implement it.

  • they need to fix the problems with the stuff they have now before that venturing into all this other crap that these people wanna see in the game. i would rather have a perfect game then one with a ton of half assed features that dont work well. granted GTAIV is a very well made game but could be better.

  • Split-screen mutliplayer, a la free mode in IV.

I dunno about anyone else, but I've got folks I could co-op a 35 hour game with, no problem. It would rock like nothing else to have offline GTA co-op.

  • I actually prefer the in car view.

  • I wish there was an option in GTA IV to get the camera to not be locked on your back. You should be able to freely operate the camera without it swinging back behind you when you move. It's probably my biggest gripe with the game, and isn't really that bad!

  • @PopACapsLockInYoAss: horrible driving?? I think GTA IV's driving is the strongest in the series yet, the camera is far from perfect but again its the best the series has had so far

There is a first person view available in the cars, but it just shows the hood of the car and the road ahead

  • @excel_excel: i think the driving is absolutely horrible. especially when trying to turn at corner at high speed.

  • What I wish it had was local split screen coop.

  • I hate it when people claim that co-op should be mandatory in games. Do you know how hard co-op is to implement? Especially online? Harder than you'd think.

  • possibly a checkpoint system for missions, like when you get ~90% done with one then BAM! dead or busted.

Instead of wasting time driving halfway across the goddamn map to repeat it.

  • I find it easier to drive using the in-car view.

  • I demand that the next game in the series take place in Gotham City. You're play a new thug in town, and your actions in the game affect your ranking. If you have 3 stars its limited to the cops. However once you get 4-5 stars there is a certain chance of Batman showing up as well. If you manage to get 6 stars then he is guaranteed to appear. The game would have a psychosis stat which would determine if you'd be thrown in Arkham if caught and would affect interactions with other characters and super villains.

  • I would like to be able to go inside every building I don't care if the none useful ones keep repeating I just like the idea of Sniping above buildings and me not being seen. They should also add some physics to the bullet if possible. And finally destructible environments that would respawn the next day I could careless about the less realistic spawn as long as my building gets destroyed.

  • This is the first GTA game where I actually use the hood cam and I find it so much better than 3rd person. With the more robust driving physics it's really much easier.

  • @ShirtGuyDom: no doubt I hate climbing streets and not being able to see who is in front of me, specially police cars could set off a random car chase that I'm not really looking forward to.

  • I want co-op missions for when buddies come over.

Without having to play with random online idiots.

    k thanks.

  • You could rob stores in Vice City: just aim at the clerk. You were wanted if you didn't kill them, as they'd ring an alarm iirc.

  • Image of slomo788 slomo788 at 05:26 PM on 05/11/08 *

The same day this was already on the net: [gta.wikia.com]

I myself DEMAND custom soundtracks. And car customization (if possible).

  • I would love to be able to throw the game into zombie mode.

Take the game and turn all those useless people you bump into into into brain hungry zombies. I know it would have nothing to do with the normal narrative of the game, but that would be a damn fun diversion to play.

  • I actually just found out that robberies aare still in the game. Walk up to a cash register, and you can press the action button to pry it open and take the money. The alarm is triggered though, and you get a wanted level.

  • @excel_excel: The current "in-car" view is terrible, its actually located on the middle of the windshield, which makes judging surroundings harder than it should be. And the other camera's aren't much better since most are two low and lag too much in following car during turns.

What GTA IV really needs are:
    Mid-mission checkpoints
Better camera (on-foot and in car)
Offline/Split-screen multiplayer (may not actually be feasible)

  • @PogiJet: I'd go for that, but actually I'd be happy enough just having a glowing door frame or something subtle like that to show which buildings you can go into. Would stop Niko cracked his face off so many door colored walls.

  • I really do think they should bring back robberies. Weren't they in Vice City? I was quite surprised to find that I couldn't rob a Burger Shot, let alone any shop in GTA IV. There was just an invisible wall preventing me from vaulting over the counter, and the kitchen door was conveniently locked.

  • Mid mission checkpoints would be great.

Personally, I'm constantly flicking the camera up to get a higher view while driving. In general, driving and camera (especially on foot) really don't bother me.

The rest of these ideas, (in the article and this thread) are entirely meh, to me.

  • How about when I lose a connection to a multiplayer game I don't have to load up the single player again? Dedicated lobby system pls? Do want.

  • ShirtGuyDom: I wish there was an option in GTA IV to get the camera to not be locked on your back. You should be able to freely operate the camera without it swinging back behind you when you move.

Heh, I wish there was an option to make the camera locked to your back at all times, at least while driving.

/I'm driving, I do a 180 degree slide turn, and I'm driving TOWARD the camera, and it takes a few seconds to turn back around.

/With the in car view, the camera stays in place looking out the windshield.

  • Wouldn't split-screen co-op mean the system has to calculate twice as much data at once?

  • @stryker1800: You should never go into a corner at high speed IRL so this part is realistic.

@slomo788: You get car customization in Midnight Club series, which basically is GTA with driving only.

I wish that the police would start chasing you if you went through the red light, or were driving the wrong way or on a pavement, just like in Getaway. It would add a little bit more of realism to the game.

  • @Green-clad Gamer Dude: DO WANT. That would be brilliant! Maybe as you progress you take work and do errands for the various villains.

  • I agree, the robbery activities in Saint's Row were excellent. Point gun to target, keep target in sights, follow target to safe, take money, then dispose of witnesses. I literally spent an hour or so just driving to different stores and robbing them. That was my pathetic attempt at creating my own Omar Little simulator...now if only you could rob known drug dealers at any time....

  • @lordargent:
'I'm driving, I do a 180 degree slide turn, and I'm driving TOWARD the camera, and it takes a few seconds to turn back around.'

Quickly click the stick for the reverse view and release it, and the camera will be back at the default view allowing you to see.

  • @stryker1800: - "i think the driving is absolutely horrible. especially when trying to turn at corner at high speed."

[sarcasm]Yes, because taking a 45 degree corner at 50 miles an hour is possible.[/sarcasm]

  • @NoahIdea: That would be great, but I don't want to see it in the next GTA, I want to see it in a patch for for GTA4.

  • Image of slomo788 slomo788 at 05:40 PM on 05/11/08 *

@2SBs: San Andreas had a great car-customization part. Especially with online races I think this would be amazing. I was so disappointed to see that I couldn't pu 28's on my Calvacade FXT :(

  • Image of Maldron Maldron at 05:46 PM on 05/11/08 *

Is one of these demands a FIX for the FREEZING I still endure? No? Well fuck you and your list, Kombo.com. I think that's a reasonable and quite fantastic demand, if you ask me.

  • @2SBs: Quite right.

  • i agree with what some others said,it would be way better if rockstar works on the more important issues than add such huge amounts of work things for seemingly few notable gain like those kombo asks for.
What are multiple cities good for? Having way more not fleshed out or non interactive areas or way more ages long driving till you get to a mission.
Fully modeled car interiors for an in car view? Again, aren´t there way more important things they could spend their time on?
I´d like it more if the uncanny valley stuff gets reduced some more (the more believable they mae the characters and the world, the more such small issues stick out like you show up at a date with a gun in your hand and your girlfriend doesn´t realize you got a gun but still only talks about your shoes, small thing slike that..)
Another thing i´d like to see would be if they could allow more freedom in how one executes a mission, i felt like in way more missions than in previous gta games one was heavily confined to do scripted sequences in the manner intended by the script, so vehicles one placed somewhere got removed, enemies were invincible in between or one could only use certain weapons or get enemies down in certain order.
Of course the more there´s a deep story and character interaction the more difficult it gets for them to still allow the player sandbox freedom during missions, but yeah, that´s where i see the biggest achievement for em,if they get that done while maintaining such an evolved storyline and deeper characters.
Also in case of moral choices in the game it would be great if one actually had more choices than kill this dude or kill that dude.
Also i felt like as the game unfolds there was more and more a weird contrast shaping up between the character of nico portrayed initially and then him suddenly doing each and anything without much moral worries at all. So yeah, what about one could then actually decide to turn down some dude and his weird tasks and then still advance the story and maybe then get more missions of different type by some other guy?
Also yeah, mid mission checkpoints would be great, it always made me think way more of the thing as game each time i had to redo a mission and then re play all parts i had already done, that was annoying.

    @stryker1800:

i think the driving is absolutely horrible. especially when trying to turn at corner at high speed.

Oh, you mean like real life?

I have learned how to take corners at very high speed, and it's quite easy once you know how. It helps that I learned how to do it for real in the police department.

    1) Hand brake for a second while turning the direction you want to go.

    2) During the slide, hit the gas and turn the wheel the opposite direction, to straighten yourself out.

    3) Just touch the normal brake/reverse button to take the fishtail out of the rear end of the vehicle, and release it. You may or may not want to let up on the gas, depending on how much your rear end turned out from under you. You'll get a feel for it the more you do it, and like me get to the point that you don't even have to let off the gas most of the time.

    4) Gun it. Depending on the car's power and ability to slide the rear tires out from under you, you will have to do some minor correction to keep it straight. Again, you'll get a feel for it.

The driving in this game is awesome and quite realistic. If you can't do it, it isn't the game's mechanics, it's that you are failing to adapt from the old ones.

  • FPS style controls, and the ability to customize them, southpaw and legacy are atill used folks and button mapping isn't bad.

PC versions had the best "on foot" controls and running backward while shooting came in handy quite often but trying to steer with a keyboard or mouse is painful when compaired to a controller. A friend of mine would switch between the kb/m and PS2 like controller when playing on his PC.

  • Bring car surfing back.

    That is all.

  • I personally use the first person view for driving (except motorcycles). I would love to have an in car view.

And I like the driving in the game. It feels more realistic with under steer/over steer. GTA wouldn't be fun if driving wasn't a little challenging. Going from point A to point B isn't fun if its easy.

  • I'm not sure what you guys are talking about with the robbery stuff. I'm pretty sure I robbed the cash register at the dry cleaners.
Walk up to the till and it tells you what button to press to open it.

Still, it could be soo much better and really cool

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 05:51 PM on 05/11/08 *

    @-MoarPlz-:

Actually, I found that if you walk up to the register in one of the clothing stores, it says "Push L1 (or the 360 equivalent I imagine) to open the register."

You do it, the alarm goes off and the worker runs for the hills, but you get the money in the register. But by the time you get to the stores that actually have any cash, you'll likely have enough money that it's not worth it.

@PapaBear434: I do it like I used to do in Forza and Midnight Club 3 last gen. Hit the brake before the curve while abruptly and then keep on turning the wheel right and left for a few seconds until the car is stabalized. Awesome for car chases, makes it look even more like a movie.

GOD WHEN ARE THESE FINALS GOING TO END???
