Mr. Juandrful over at Kezins.com has pieced together a backstory on Niko Bellic, in a VH1 "Behind the Music" kind of biography. Counterintuitively, I should put up a spoiler alert here, because although it's all about stuff prior to his arrival in Liberty City, naturally it draws on dialogue and events in the game, which you may not have played yet. Mr. Juandrful also says some of this was built on "inside info" about Niko's past, given to him by Rockstar.
Anyway, spoiler warning, don't click the link if you want to get Niko's backstory through the game for yourself. Otherwise, if you want a quick read that humanizes the character, go for it.
Behind the Game: Niko Bellic Before GTA IV [kezins.com]

Exactly the reason why he would make such a great main character for the GTAs to come, if they make them, which they will...
Also, you spelt Niko wrong...
god i thought i was going to hate Niko with a passion, but that hatred quickly went away as soon as i started playing him and watching his story unfold. What a great character.
I don't see the point of Mr. Juandrful's article. Everything he says about Niko you find out from playing the game. It seems that the only reason he wrote that article was to proclaim that he talk to a Rockstar dev.
didn't they also spell Belic wrong? Or is it Bellic?
Yeah, I haven't played GTAIV, but I like what I've seen of Niko's character.
Is it Nico or Niko? I've seen the latter, but that implies that Owen Good (good, dammit, GOOD), has erred, and I refuse to believe that such is possible.
Going on the way Cyrillic is written in the Latin alphabet Nico would sound like Knee-So. So it is definitely Niko. :)
This article is a copy of Wikipedia's article on Niko, or vice versa.
Just a heads-up.
It's Niko, and it's Belic. There are no double l's in our language's names.
Well. Technically it's Belić.
why does it seem like typos NEVER get edited on this site.... seriously, my only quirk about the place
anyway tho, yah i saw this earlier today, thought it seemed a little hokey as its basically for people who didnt pay attention when they played through the game
was pretty informative tho nonetheless....
Niko is a pretty good main character. He is well acted and well voiced, and I like how he reacts to situations, and his motives.
@Galivanting, Lamburger Helper: People make mistakes. It's not the end of the world.
@BlackDove:
I'm assuming I'm not the only one who cringes when Belic is mispronounced then..
Niko is the main reason I wanted GTAIV in the first place. He's damn awesome.
I think I'll bookmark this and watch it once I've gotten through the game. I wouldn't care about the spoilers normally, but reviewers all went nuts over the plot of GTAIV, so I figure I don't need all my theories crushed about how the story develops, particularly in reference to the "ending changing decision" and which former associates, etc. you'll be forced to kill. I hope R* is putting some intentional misdirection in. One of the things I hated about Army of Two is that you could tell who the last boss would be halfway into the first stage.
bought gta4 release day, got about 80% through it, now im auctioning off my 360 elite and all games including gta4 on ebay.
im way too poed at the state of games.
this little video will be handy in filling in some gaps i probably missed as big climactic reveals that weren't worth trudging through 10 year old game-play.
coming out of the 90's its hard to get used to only looking forward to graphical improvements or tennis simulations.
not trying to go against the grain, just telling a story about a genesis-n64 era gamer scorn from the turn of the century's lack of innovation.
i poopoo :(
must finish game first... I'm enjoying this way too much
How the hell do you mis-spell his name? Seriously.
@Payne_IV: I knew I was going to do that this weekend, sooner or later. Gah. Fixed. Thanks.
I don't want to read the article for fear of spoilers, but does it address the issue of exactly what country Niko is from--or, more specifically, what ethnic group he belongs to? It seems pretty obvious he's from a country that was once part of Yugoslavia, but I suppose feelings are still sensitive enough over what Milosevic wrought in the 1990s that it was considered bad for business to identify Niko with any particular side...
@Americo: yes i am aware... people also fix mistakes as mr good has ^^
@Johnny_Clueless:
The article claims he's Croatian born, but grew up in Serbia. I'll leave it at that.
My chick is a Croat. I'm learning the language. Niko and Roman definately speak Serbo-Croatian.
Loves the taxi drivers swearing in Greek "A RE MALAKA"
Awesome.
