David "Pointman" Brothers dropped a bunch of new screens for upcoming Playstation 3 shooter SOCOM Confrontations this week over on the SOCOM site, he also added a bit of commentary to a few.
Check out the jump for details on some of the screens taking from the Crossroads and Urban Wasteland maps. I can't wait till this game hits, looks like it's going to be a total blast.
On the Crossroads map:

Three on one? All’s fair in love and war.
I’m a huge fan of architecture and the way cities look. I took a trip to New York City a couple weeks ago and came home with more pictures of random buildings and streets than I did of the actual thing I went there to see.
So, there’s a lot for me to like in this one screen. The way that the tile gives way to basic dirt, the street lamps, and the brick work are all pushing my buttons over here. It’s pretty cool, isn’t it?

Do you see that lion in the background, just to the left of center?
If you wanted to, you could travel all the way over there. Same thing with the tall building in the center, and the rooftops to the left, front, and center.
Two more bits. First, if you have a proper weapon, you can snipe from this position and pick people off from across the map. Second, do you see the birds flying in the air? You can shoot them. We don’t encourage that sort of thing, and you’re really better off shooting at the enemy, but hey... you can shoot them.

This is an image from the same angle as the post from the other day, but a bit lower to the ground and more detailed. You can see some things that were blocked or covered before. The bicycle, the garbage bags (there are two), and the fuel can, for example. There’s even a transformer on the electrical tower.
For those of you who don’t speak French, “Bain pour hommes" translates to, “Men’s Bath.”
On the Urban Wasteland map:

This is a shot from Urban Wasteland. We can get a good look at the wrecked building, and can probably figure out some decent working strategies for this specific point. There are pretty clearly four levels at work here— the beginning of the stairs (off-screen), the first landing, the second landing (off-screen to the left and top), and then the walkway in the top right.
It seems like it’d be pretty easy to pick people off from any level of the staircase, which means that you’ve got to stay on your toes when ascending or descending. The real question is what’s in the rooms that the staircase comes from and goes to?

Can't wait!
Wow graphically it looks amazing. Hope it plays that way.
I seriously have to get a PS3.
MGS4, LBP, DF, Warhawk, now THIS?
Damn you Sony, you and your expensive console!
Looks sweet. Is it true it will digitally distributed via PSN? Will there be a BD (Blu-ray Disc) version as well like Warhawk?
I guess ESRB won't have to bother rating this one...automatic M because you can shoot innocent birdies!
(Anyone else having a format crash on this page?)
The graphics look really stunning, except in the third screen, the distant buildings look really uninspired, flat, textureless and simple to me. Some of them literally look like a white box made in MS Paint with two black boxes inside.
I have a PS3 and i'm really not interested at all in getting this. What does this have that COD4 does not have? The graphics look about the same quality for every other shooter on any console right now. Convince me there is a good reason to get this game.
@Coquiton:
whats DF?
your missing several exclusives from that list, but i guess those are the ones you are interested in.
Well Socom keeps looking better every time I see it.
On a side note does any one know if there will be a public beta for this game?
In some shots the graphics look good, in others...total meh IMO. Gameplay is what will matter here though.
DO WANT
I must admit I have never played a Socom game. My friends who play it swear by it.
What is the gameplay like? Is it similar to GRAW online?
This doesn't look bad at all, I wonder how it plays though. Highly tactical gets very boring, very fast. Hopefully it has some speed to it.
Socom Started it all. So keep that in Mind. Also Socom Plays or used to anyways far more realistic. You can pick camo and it has nothing to do with your weapon choices and so on.
Great team based game.
Puck
Socom is a fast paced game. But it helps to win if you play with some tactics.
Also all the options for search and destroy in COD4 has been around in socom for ages.
@string_theory:
its going to be on Blu-ray too with a headset ala Warhawk
@Shandy706:
Socom has never been about the graphics tho...just the sweet third person gameplay
Oh man I can't wait for this game!!
@BlackIce - I heard that there was going to be a beta I don't know if its a public one, could be like the PSP one, where you get sent the disk in the mail, of maybe a direct download from PSN store?
Is this socom or GRAW 3?
@DugDawg: Well, at the best of times it was like a well oiled machine grinding out tactical gameplay, crazy teamwork, and insane firefights in tightly packed locations.
At the worst of times, deranged firefights much akin to most shooters.
Basically take MGO, get rid of the Metal Gear quirks, and speed it up.
Had some of the best gameplay modes as well.
Looks good, but I've moved onto CoD4. SOCOM just doesn't interest me anymore.
I might give it a try if the reviews are great
I cant wait to get this one. Even more so after watching the gameplay footage.
One thing for sure about the SOCOM series is that its by far more associated with proper teamwork than COD4.
@battlemaus: Well, I guess it technically should be UDF, but I was referring to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
But those are the ones that REALLY make me want to get the PS3. Not much else calls my attention as much (not to say they aren't good).
I guess you could say the other titles are on the back-burner, so to speak. :P
@string_theory:
Yes,PSN and BD release.Price will be around what Warhawk is..7 maps.I'm definitely gonna have it :)
Yes,UDF is a great game..I'm a little biased,but it's my favorite.
Is this going to be different from other SOCOM games, as in some sort of sequel or is this basically a port?
I might give a try, especially if there's a demo. Keyboard and mouse would be a must though.
@Puck:
It's a completely new game. Soome of the more famous maps like Crossroads have been revamped and expanded. The Dualshock works pretty well for SOCOM games as indicated by the popularity of the franchise on the PS2. There still may be a keyboard/mouse option though.
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
Awesome, that means that there could be a good player base on it since it's new and not a rehash. I'll be keeping my eye on this one. I tried the Haze demo a while back (with a UK account instead of the States where it just got released), and while it's not bad, it didn't really pique my interest or look that impressive. Seemed a bit run of the mill. This certainly looks to have it beaten visually.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: No. There won't be a mouse/keyboard option. The hardcore fans like me will not buy the game. We want SOCOM like SOCOM II was. I don't want it to turn into a PC game or like UT III. Looks great btw, I can't wait for the closed beta!
These screens are looking quite nice... it really makes me yearn for GRAW :( What the hell is Ubisoft Doing messing with this R6V2 shit give me some GRAW3!!!
@phunky420:
So.. Cuz the graphics look the same as other shooters it can be as good?
Gameplay my friend. That is what Socom is famous for and still reigns supreme in. Some of the best gameplay in a shooter I have ever witnessed.
Socom 2 was doing years ago what CoD4 does today. Its intense stuff and not for faint of heart, you need guts, strategy and teamwork to succeed in Socom. Call of Duty all you need is a grenade launcher...
@spargo_1:
*can't be as good
@DugDawg: nothing like graw, alot more tactical then graw and if you have no teamwork in this game you prob wont win.. also this game is very claned orriented with gamebattles.com and all
Can't wait to play this game. MGO and Warhawk will tide me over nicely until August, then Disgaea 3 ought to keep me pretty busy til Socom.
KOTAKU CLAN....please?...How come I can never find anyone from Kotaku on MGO Beta? I hope this doesn't continue when Socom comes out. I for one, am glad that Killzone isn't coming until 2009. MGO, Warhawk, Socom, Wipeout HD and Resistance2 will be more than enough to satisfy.
@phunky420:
maybe you belong to the new generation of "gamers" in a age range between 10 - 15yo and never had the pleasure of playing a true team co-op strat shooter like SOCOM and don't have a clue about this great title
"For those of you who don't speak French, "Bain pour hommes" translates to, "Men's Bath.""
I speak Arabic and it does say "Men's Bath", there is also one for women on the top screen (what the hell?)
@iby777: Maybe there will be an erotic bath house mini game.
Have to differentiate your game from all the others somehow!
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.:
I'm on and off on it along with other stuff.
I never played Socom but I know that everyone swears by them. If it's anything like MGO was (I friggin loved that beta) then I'm down. Download the sucker and lets go!
@Coquiton:
just save $400 and your good to go. games will end up costing more in the end. as with ANY video game system. (maybe even PC?..)
Man, SOCOM 1 was like, one of the first PS2 games that I played online and it was the best tactical shooter ever. SOCOM 2 was even better but SOCOM 3 brought the standards down a bit. From what I've read, Confrontation is set to be the best SOCOM game yet. Can't wait!!
Like some have said already, SOCOM 2 was definitly the best in the series so far. I was so addicted to that game when it came out. Never even finished the first mission, just online from start to finish.
Also like others have said, these are (or where, atleast) very tactical games. 1-3 shots WILL kill you. If you wanna run around like rambo you WILL die.
I think thats the appeal for most ppl.
If they can go back to what made S2 so good, and expand on it, I think they've got a winner.
PS. I haven't played much GRAW so I can really compare the two.
i've only played SOCOM 1 for ps2 and the first one for the PSP, but both were great, so i'll check this out. i actually never tried the multiplayer options in these games ~___~
@pandafresh:
Aw, you missed Socom II, which is easily the best and most popular of the bunch. Over 25,000 still play daily :D
Thanks to getting a PS3, I can finally play the SOCOM series...I had NO idea of what I was missing. I am a TacBang guy and these games are incredible. I bought all of them for the PS3 (2) and the PSP. Not sure why people are down on 3, I love the inclusion of vehicles.
SOCOM Confrontation...day one DL for me. Any SOCOM/tacbangers feel free to send me a friend's request on either platform.
@B1S1:
You'll be happy to know that SOCOM 2 was what the development team used as their "template" for this game.
@pandafresh: How can you not play the multiplayer.
The online was the best part about it, Socom is by far the best tactical shooter on the console market.
Great, now instead of every war game being in WWII, they're all going to be in the vague "middle east".
Can't you devs think of anything else?
