Impress Your Friends With These Xbox 360 Grand Theft Auto IV Statistics

Hot numbers! We got hot numbers, folks, fresh from the Microsoft sales and marketing team! The company's Gamerscore Blog is stuffed with statistics, revealing that Xbox 360 console sales were up 54% during the week of Grand Theft Auto IV's release. Of the millions of copies of GTA IV sold, MS says that 60% of those were of the 360 persuasion. Take that, friendly competition!

In addition to sexy percentages, Microsoft has whipped out big, big numbers, including 1 million concurrent Xbox Live users, 12 million GTA IV Achievements and 2.3 million total players going online last week with Rockstar's latest. All those zeros! *pant pant* I need a cigarette, a Vitamin Water and a shower. For even more digits, hit up the official boast post or visit your local library.

  • You're welcome, Microsoft.

  • Oh Microsoft, those numbers are SO BIG!

  • Less numbers more game announcements *roar*

60% doesn't seem like a 2-to-1 rate like some may have suggested but it's not bad either. I guess this will keep someone at Microsoft from getting fired :)

  • 60% is proably just enough to justify the exclusive DLC, but let's be honest, Sony didn't come out of this deal too shabby either.

  • I'm gonna guess that the 60% is a rounded up number too, just like the 2:1 was "kinda, accidentally" rounded up.

Would be nice to have some more transparency and less bullshittery in this industry. Leave the fantasy to the game designers hey? :)

  • With XBL, GTA on the 360 is the best way to go.

  • So I suppose that means %40 of sales went to the PS3. Not bad considering the difference in install base and the 360 exclusive DLC.

  • Is that 60% worldwide? If so, that's better than I expected. If it's US only, then it's worse.

  • From experience, and from what I hear when i talk to casual gamers, GTA is considered more of a Sony property to the average game. Also, most people that i talked to that got the 360 version had no clue about the exclusive DLC, Microsoft should have done a better job of marketing it.

  • I would hope the ps3 got at least 40% of the sales being as there is nothing else to play on that system at the moment.

  • Okay, let's put this in perspective here. 60% of the sales for this game translates to the same attach rate for both PS3 and 360. The margin between install base between the 360 and the PS3 indicates that if you exclude Wii figures, 360 has 60% of the remaining market while the PS3 has the other 40%. Shocker.

  • As far as I see it the DLC only affects the sales for people who either own both machines or those picking one up to play the game. For everyone else you'd be buying it for what you got regardless of whether you wanted the DLC or not.

  • @Vipre77: that didnt make much sense

  • 60%? That's it? So a full year headstart in the marketplace, the promise of DLC (which will probably make it to PS3 eventually anyway),the Live functionality, and the universal hatred for Sony could only barely break a 50/50 split? Guffaw.

  • 60%? After how long of a head start?

Either nobody gives a damn about DLC (which I doubt), or somebody sold a shit ton of PS3s.

For the record, 60GB PS3, no freezing issues.

  • 60% sounds impressive until you consider the ratio in respect to the install base.

Kudos to them anyway for snagging away so many GTA fans from the Playstation. Quite a feat of monopolistic domination, which is what M$ is best at.

  • Yay Microsoft! Yay Take 2! Yay Sony!

  • 60% isnt that impressive considering the install base difference and the much touted exclusive content.

Everybody I know bought this game on PS3.

  • @Scott3D: Good for them. Good for Sony too.

  • But overall, it's Rockstar that matters, who gives a damn what platform it sells more on? Stop this useless console war and like the game.

  • 2:1 is 66% to 33% guys
60% is pretty close to 2:1.

Sure its *not* 2:1, but the first week the statistics are pretty fuzzy.

They probably only did so well due to the 360 install base in the US. Sad really, I do like the 360, XNA is fun to use. Though Microsofts penchant for penny and diming (Live, XNA etc) probably doesn't help it much.

  • I don't think the console headstart really matters, because its the sales *now* that matters.

    the 360 didn't get an 18 month head-start for the GTA4 release.

The statistics probably tells you how many people jumped ship to 360 during that 18 months. Look at xbox1's install base compared to ps2

(gotta be a HUGE disparity there I'd wager in the 10% to xbox 90% ps2 or higher).

You have to compare the 360's figures to the xbox1's figures. That shows you what the 18 months did. And when you compare something like 10% to 60%, you see that the head-start was *huge*

  • @MeateaW:

Wow crazy talk. 2 arguments in 1!

Ignore the first 2 lines and just read the rest - I'm nuts. (and didn't use preview enough)

  • If it's true that only 60% of the copies were xbox ones, then it's a rather heavy failure for Microsoft, considering the distance in installed base.

This without mentioning that last week the PS3 outsold the 360 HEAVILY (console wise) all round the world, US included.

Wonder if Microsoft is gonna pull out another shortages excuse to try and PR spin that.

  • Umm, let's not forget the pirates...

  • ok the title is degrading :/

  • Guys,

I would like to point out that this is sales for the first week. The difference here is that MS took a 60% cut of total sales, more than likely to solo-console owners.

The difference will be in the coming month as the attach rate for the PS3 starts to dwindle in the US because there just aren't that many consoles. You'll see the 360 version level out but I bet it'll be at a higher purchase rate long after the PS3.

    Longevity will mark the difference.

Don't forget, you dual console owners, when the DLC drops for the 360 and you purchased the PS3 version first ... you'll probably find an extra $60 bucks lying around somewhere in the fall.

  • @Spilt_Milk:
That makes no sense..come on lol

  • I contributed

UK example of the numbers slew:

""Data released by ELSPA/Chart-Track shows Xbox 360 Week One sales at 514,000 copies sold in the UK. PlayStation 3 version of the game sold only 413,000 copies, clearly demonstrating that gamers prefer the Xbox 360 version," says the Microsoft press release progaganda exercise.

What a load of complete rubbish, Microsoft!

Let's do the maths. 413,000 PS3 copies of GTA IV divided by the 1.2m PS3 consoles sold in the UK, equates to about 0.3 copies sold per console. So basically one in three UK PS3 owners have bought GTA IV in the last seven days.

Compare that to the 514,000 Xbox 360 copies sold in the UK, divided by the 2.2m consoles in circulation. It amounts to 0.23 copies per console. So about one in four Xbox 360 owners bought the game. Comparatively LESS than the PS3 version."

  • Y'know... 60% of the of the total sales isn't bad, but if you consider how much higher the install rate is with the Xbox 360, I'd have expected more.

Well, apparently $50 million buys you a 10% edge in sales. So... yeah!

  • 60% doesn't seem like a good enough reason to sell out the original Xbox install base. :/

  • Yeah, yow, 60% is nothing to sneeze at but it should have been more like 75-80% considering how many more installed units they have.

  • 60% is weak considering how much longer the 360 has been on the market - that said, compared to last gen Microsoft has done rather well for itself.

One step at a time then?

  • That isn't so impressive... 360, come on!

  • So... More 360s have GTA4, but a higher percentage of PS3s have GTA4... Can Sony push attatch rate, now? Microsoft loves so much to do it, after all...

  • Remember that these numbers are US only and not worldwide, so comment them accordingly.

  • @bobtheduck: Attach rate is absolutely meaningless anyway. The only decently meaningful data is attach rate vs time, wich is almost the same between the two consoles. When you hear a microsoft PR boasting the xbox TOTAL attach rate versus the other consoles, the only thing you can do is giggling in his face.

    @Furu:

They definately seem worldwide to me. in the US the margin in favor of the 360 is higher, while in europe the PS3 version clearly outsold the 360 version

  • In addition to sexy percentages, Microsoft has whipped out big, big numbers

Hi-oh! This post is now rated 'M' for Mature. Get your IDs out and form an orderly line, folks.

  • Wow, the idiots are out today. 60/40 is a 10% split?!? Must be that metric math I hear so much about. 60/40 not 2 to one so 360 fails?!?! again idiot math.

According to Sony, PS is the 'home' of GTA. Sorry to bust the bubble, but that is the past. Every one I know that has both systems, bought the 360 version. That is the number I want to see. Of multi-system owners who bought GTA IV, which version did they by. I bet a large percentage that did buy the PS3 version did so to justify their investment in the PS3, not because they think it is the better offering.

  • @Necroscope: Lol, that's a pretty laughable statement. Sony didn't invest much into bringing customers to buy GTA on their console, while we already know a part of what Microsoft spent (add to that all they spent for getting advertising semi exclusives). Let's see what all those million dollars got them: They still got a percentage that's not even proportional to the installed base of the two consoles, a game that shows their console as underpowered compared to the competition, and the 360 largely outsold by the PS3 in console sales on EVERY market in the world (US/Europe/Japan) on the GTA launch week.

Maybe you should consider the fact that the ones that bought the PS3 version (and there are quite a lot of them) did so simply because they feel that the PS3 is a better (and more reliable) console, and that GTA on the PS3 looks quite a bit better than on the 360.

The above results, mate, are nothing to boast about for Microsoft. Worldwide (taking the difference in isntalled base into consideration) more people chose to buy the PS3 version over the 360 one. In europe the PS3 version outsold the 360 one flatly (showing how much of a failure the 360 price cuts have been), and ultimately Sony sold MANY more consoles than Microsoft due to GTA. They need quite a PR spin to consider this anything else than a total failure, and some quite naive fanboys to have someone to actually believe such PR spin.

If there's someone that can boast about their GTAIV week, I'm afraid it's Sony, not Microsoft.

  • wonder how many people play it on PSN now too... still, i'm playing SP for now until i beat it.

  • @Abriael: I don't deny that there are quite a lot of people that bought GTA IV for the PS3. So far about 2.4 million people. What I doubt, is that the vast majority of them did so simple because they feel the PS3 is a better console. They may have bought the PS3 because they think it is a better console. I contend that many of the people who own both consoles and bought the PS3 version did so because they felt a loyalty to GTA on PS and a need to justify their PS3 purchase by getting a AAA title for it. Just as many who own both console and chose the 360 version did so due to the DLC and not because they thought the 360 was the better console.

I am not suprised that the percentages are weight, in terms of installed base, to the PS3. Most PS fans cut their teeth on GTA 3. Most of them ridiculed MS for even trying to get into the console market with out the availability of GTA. Most of them nashed their teeth and called RockStar sellout for creating an Xbox version of San Andreas.

While a lot of Xbox owners obviously choose to buy GTA IV (about 3.6 million), many, could not care less about it. The did not play GTA 3, and they did not rush out to buy San Andreas. Frankly, I think 60% of a game that arguably built the PlayStation name is admirable.

Reviews have been split and the consensous is that the game is great on both consoles. If 60% of the purchases on a larger install base is a failure, then nearly identical performance on a what should be vastly superior hardware must also be considered a failure.
