Yesterday I posted more of a plea than a story, asking Tecmo not to F-up their return to the beloved football franchise Tecmo Bowl and it seems that most of you were with me. Heck, I even received a private email with assurances that things would remain F-up free. And for the most part, it seems that that is the case.
But Stephen Totilo IMed me this morning to point out what he's found out about the upcoming game, most of which sounds great, some of which... OK one of which, is not so much.
First of all, I’m told that this game isn’t a new 3D re-invention. It’s a classic 2D game.
I’ve also learned that the game won’t include any NFL teams or players, due to EA having the licenses locked up. It won’t include retired players either, and that includes “Tecmo Super Bowl” icon Bo Jackson.

Eh, as much as I used Bo back in the good ol' days, it's not a deal-breaker if the gameplay is fun. Glad to hear they contacted you directly, that's a mark of people who don't want to F it up!
Hopefully whatever names they do put in are at least somewhat mocking of EA's retarded grasp on the NFL's names. Blo Backson anyone?

@dead_red_eyes: It's bad enough that they have the NFL license, but they also have the Arena Football and NCAA football licenses. I mean, Arena Football is basically Tecmo Bowl in real life, right? At least the CFL and its 9 teams are still out there.

Could you imagine if they just took Tecmo Super Bowl, and re-did it with updated NFL teams/rosters, a franchise mode with trades and a draft, and included online play? The freaking game would sell MILLIONS, easily.
And yes I know that it's not possible. But we all know damn well that an update Tecmo Super Bowl would rule the earth.

If the customization options are hefty enough, it'll be OK. I'd either give the CFL a shot or just try and remake the Old Tecmo.

So many good times with this game. So many absurd plays. I always played as my beloved 49ers, completing absurd 100+ yard passes from Montana to Rice.
TSB is fucking gold to begin with. All they need to do is spruce up the graphics a bit, add online play and voice chat, and butcher the names. As long as the teams play as I remember from back in '92, I can die a happy man.
Even more reason to be pissed off at EA.

For those who still want to play Tecmo Bowl, but with modern day players, google for the 2007 TSB ROM. It's been reprogrammed with up current rosters, they added 32 teams and redid the conferences. Awesome stuff!

You can't forget about the Aikman/Irvin dynamic duo! You know how when you had a high pass, you'd get the cutscene of the receiver jumping up to catch it? Irvin was the only one that I'd ever seen jump not one, not two, but THREE screens!

Go Raiders! Ah that video made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes. Running it back to the other side of the field was a great way to add insult to injury. Tecmo Bowl without the Bo just doesn't feel right. Let's hope for an unlockable character named Slow Hackson at least. We'll, we still have Pro Stars. It's all about helping kids.

I don't think Bo Jackson was even in tecmo super bowl, but he was unstoppable in the original tecmo bowl.
