Did Sony deliberately hobble the Playstation Portable at launch? A blogger in Australia believes they did. Robin points to a presentation given by Mark DeLoura, SCEA's manager of developer relations, at this year's GDC. In PSP Advanced Software Overview, DeLoura mentions that the PSP's CPU and bus have clockspeeds configured by software. Adding that the the CPU is locked at 222 MHz, but according to the specs releases last year the PSP's top speed is 333 MHz.
Robin thinks this was done to help stretch battery life and thinks that a time will come when Sony will release a higher capacity battery and unlock the PSP's full potential. Very interesting.
