Is the gritty realism of Battlefield: Bad Company not your particular cup of tea? Chris over at EvoGamer shares with us the website where you can sign up for the beta test of EA's cartoony alternative, Battlefield Heroes. Of course the main game will be free when it comes out, but it always helps to get a leg up on the competition while keeping an eye out for bugs you can keep to yourself and exploit at a later date.

"What is this, some kind of agreement? Hmm says here 'We own your soul, must give one quart of blood every month' blah blah blah...Where do I sign?"
I wish this was a console version. I dislike PC gaming.
Bad Company is the Battlefield "Cartoony Alternative" compared to the other games in the series.
I love how slow it is. But that is to be expected.
I was able to register for everything though :)
the site is hammered lol.
Just registered as well!
You guys should check more websites...I got this about 2-3 hours ago :)
From what I hear the system requirements are pretty low..1.3ghz,etc.
@enewtabie:
Windows XP/Vista
* 1 GHz CPU
* 512 MB RAM for XP (1 GB RAM for Vista)
* 1 GB hard disk space
* DirectX compatible 64 MB graphics card with Pixel Shader 2.0
* DirectX compatible sound card
* Internet connection: 256kbit Cable/DSL connection
How do you download the game? i have registred a new account and all that shit :S
@Winterbringer: Bad company?
you mean heroes, right?
Yea, their site is being DESTROYED right now. All I've got is Qaboss in the title bar, and a blank screen, haha...
And my computer can actually run this, theoretically...which shocks me b/c it's a business-class laptop! (I'm an engineering student in college--they're standard issue...for $2,000 add-on to our tuition...talk about garbage...)
How do i download?
@AnonymousFinger:
Too bad. Now sit down and eat your dinner.
Worth a try and EA sure as shit needs help ironing out bugs!
@AnonymousFinger:
What a stunning admission of narrow mindedness. Until consoles adopt controls that mimic or surpass the KB+M they will always be an inferior platform for FPS and other PC centric genres.
The low system specs and zero entry cost for this game makes it perfect for what could be a massive chunk of net connected PCs out there.
@enewtabie: I mean, wouldn't that technically be a good thing for EA? Not only will this at least make people try it because it's free, but also increase the amount of players that can play it because of the low requirements.
Put it this way, even if Crysis multiplayer was free I don't think that many people would enjoy it because of its intense requirements (besides having mediocre gameplay).
@BrotherNick: You guys should check more websites...I got this about 2-3 hours ago :)
You should check more websites... This was open on the 17th :)
Why sign up for the beta test when you can just get the game when it comes out and complain about all the bugs then? Every EA FPS game is nothing but an endless beta test. At least this time they're not making people pay to do it for them.
@Jelster: What was that I heard, was it the pot calling the kettle black?
Stupid crap keeps timing out on me, grrrrr
@Jelster: It's narrow minded to call him narrow minded without hearing more. He didn't say he dislikes PC GAMES he said he dislikes PC GAMING. So while I would agree that KB+M is superior for many games, mostly FPS/RTS, if a gamer is uncomfortable with using a keyboard and mouse that doesn't necessarily make him/her "narrow minded". Saying that PC Games are all trash and not worth trying would be narrow minded. Stating a preference is not narrow minded at all, in my opinion.
Either way, a preference is a preference. Don't tell someone they're wrong in a way that may make them feel like an idiot. ("a stunning admission of narrow mindedness") Instead just let the positives of PC Gaming speak for themselves. Much more friendly! Can't we all just get along?
@Jelster: Hey lay off him, sure PC gaming beats console gaming as the KB+M is far superior, but he is allowed to express his opinion without being shouted at.
Im a console gamer and I've never liked PC games because I find FPS harder to control (I suck), but im willing to make a start with this one :)
exploit the bugs? surely you're not serious? sadly, that's what a lot of "leet" gamers will be doing with this beta.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: I got all the way to the confirmation code and it just keeps timing out. The site must be taking a right hammering, odd that it's not being run through EA
@Jelster:
I'm pretty sure (positive) DICE are making this game.
DICE are making this game yes, and DICE are part of EA. But I think what .digiwalsh is saying is that the beta signups are being done through QABoss and that's what he finds odd.
But it's not uncommon for third party QA companies to be doing tests like this. I just wish they had servers that could handle the demand. If the website is screwed when it gets hammered I'm not looking forward to seeing what the game is like come launch day.
@SFLegend:
Far from it, I was merely stating that blindly wishing every game ever made onto consoles can be limiting to game design. Console controls are at best, okay, for FPS and as such games compensate. Likewise other game mechanics are altered to enable more "fun" play, like auto health regen.
I have no problem with games appearing on any platform, I just don't think the weaker platform should dictate the evolutionary path of game design.
@okrangerbob:
Sure he is, but I am likewise entitled to shoot it down in flames if I have an opposite opinion. Bemoaning the need for any game of interest to be ported or worse, designed specifically for, consoles is going to paint gaming into a very dull and uninspiring corner if you ask me.
I'm glad you're going to give this a try though, the KB+M won't take you long to become accustomed too but will take some time to master. Watch out for and sign up for the [www.quakelive.com] beta if you want to hone those skills further on a superb FPS engine.
@will:
Yeah seems DICE is doing Heroes, Bad Company, Mirror's Edge and no doubt BF3. I'd still question EA's commitment to plentiful bug fixes unless the game is hugely successful. As such the more bugs the beta testers can find the better if you ask me. :)
i sure wish EA would fix Kanes Wrath
@BrotherNick:
I don't know who you are, but I've seen too many websites today. Signed up two days ago, although I don't think I have time for this Team Fortr... fun beta test.
@hellbent:
I think that's something between him and his urologist. :)
Urrrrrrrgh. Urrrrrrrgh! Must get game. Ohshi- It's not Mac compatible...
Do I have to register for this other site?
@Jelster: You do know that this Battlefield, according to Crecente, is supposed to be targeted at casual FPS players right?
From his Hands-On:
So are we pumped? Not really. Don't get us wrong, for a free web game Heroes looks great. But for those used to online multiplayer fragfests, Heroes' simple (read: rudimentary) mechanics will grow dull quickly. It's hard to see in the promo clip above, but there's something about the physics and general interface that just feels a generation younger than the current consoles...let alone PCs.
[kotaku.com]
I'm pretty certain that consoles wouldn't be limiting anything in this game, as apparently they're greatly limiting the game themselves to make it more accessible to the masses.
@Nirolak: That's not Crecente's impressions, those are Wilson's, which date back to February. Crecente's more recent impressions seem to be much more positive.
Signed up! This looks like fun. The fact that the game is free helps too.
Submitted this to TIPS last Thursday. got in the beta last Friday only six hours later. =/
Since TF2 came out, whole buncha games coming out have left gritty realism for clever cartoon-ism.
Anyway, need a dispenser here, need a dispenser here, need a dispenser here.
@BigMoose: Whoops, how'd I mess that one up? *smacks forehead*
Thanks for the correction.
the site was sooooooo slow O_o
was that the kotaku effect?
@Nirolak:
Regardless of who it is aimed at* the controls on a PC would be superior to that on a console. The whole other thing was me expanding the idea a bit further with regards to the whole design changes.
I actually would love to see a single hardware platform (360 and/or PS3) for FPS with M+KB support, it would be a huge improvement over the PC. It's a perfect level playing field, with no hardware, fps, resolution or configuration advantages. Obstacles are of course, getting that fucking classic controller out of console gamer's cold dead boney hands and showing developers that there is actually some hardcore "hardcore" gamers rather than people who think CoD4 is the pinnacle of skilled FPS gaming.
Oh and while I'm teetering on the off topic and wild flights of fancy. I'd like to have more control of the console servers with files released to run our own so we're not bound to the publishers to just shut down the game whenever they please. Likewise I'd hate to lose the map/mod community the PC FPS games have, give us some tools for that too.
If Sony want a plus over MS following through on the above wouldn't be a bad notch in the bedpost.
* I'd argue the game is targeted at the "casual" gamer as in someone who will casually play the game on and off compared to a "hardcore" gamer who will play it 8+ hours a day. Not "casual" as is it'll be based around Peggle and involve hitting enter every 60 seconds.
I'll also say the game will obviously be sparse and bland as I expect a barrage of maps and content to be sold in order to fill those EA coffers. They'll give only enough to get people hooked.
A public sign up for a beta which asks the user to agree not say that there is a beta.
very funny
I think the website is down... at least I get a "problem loading page" message
@NoBullet: Touche.
I tired earlier and the site borked out after the registration screen. I just tried it now and it appears to function perfectly.
not played yetttttttttttttttt
how do you download
