Look, I'm so on the fence about posting this my ass cheeks are dotted with splinters. But hey, it's Shenmue, and there's precendent for this kind of business on the Wii, so who knows. Scandinavian games mag Gamereactor have heard that Sega plan to release Shenmue on the Wii. Not a new Shenmue, however, just Shenmue 1 & 2 bundled together, with added (no doubt waggle-intensive) minigames thrown in. Would it sell? Of course not. Would it get certain areas of the internet all giddy with excitement regardless? Of course it would.

If they have slightly better graphics, I'm all in.
If not, I'm in at budget price.
Yeah, how about no. I'd rather have Shenmue 3.
I dont like Wii, but Shenmue news is GOOD news =)
sk
Man, I am SOLD ALREADY.
Gamereactor is a reliable swedish (also danish) gaming mag, so I bet its true.
They get exclusive information from time to time. Most recently the Nights announcement iirc.
This is a step in the right direction. Lets get some Shenmue merchandise back on the market and raise awareness of the greatest series ever!
I dont want Ryo to be stuck in that damn cave forever...
@ItsHammerTime: Ah, it says "Rumor" in the mag aswell. Might still be a hoax then.
...b, but I don't know anything about the Four Wu Du...
Need Shenmue repackaged for PS2 platform, maybe the Xbox if fanboys kiss my ass. Both One and Two on newer platforms, considering Two was only Jap and PAL.
Or get a Dreamcast and buy them on eBay for some cash-o-la.
I want High School Musical 1 and 2 bundled for the Wii =( Now there's a hardcore game.
Shenmue cost too much to make to forgive it for being so damn clunky.
gonna go out on a limb and say the DC version will still look better
Oh god, I can't even imagine doing all those random no warning quick time events with the wiimote. It was bad enough with a normal controller.
I'll buy 4 copies of this game if it means that they will finish the Shenmue series with Shenmue 3 sometime this millennium.
About as likely as Shenmue Online coming here.
+ Watch video
Internet explodes in 3... 2... 1...
@UNDERSTAR: one day my friend it will come
@ItsHammerTime: I agree. Repackaging for the PS2 would probably actually be somewhat successful.
Shenmue = GTA with no guns, no hookers, no action, even less plot, et cetera.
I mean, the most exciting thing you can do in the damn games is play After Burner in an arcade, and the second-most exciting thing you can do is hold a plate in front of your face and rotate it around with bizarre wrist motions. You can do both of these things in real life! In fact, the last time I bought a plate at a Japanese plate shop, I did "The Ryo Hazuki Thing" -- just held it between the thumbs and forefingers of my hands and swung it forward and backward repeatedly. I'd planned to do it until someone called the cops, though after about two hours no one had noticed, so I bought the damned thing and went home.
It's so redundant in this age of GTA IV and the Yakuza games; a re-release would be ridiculous.
I mean, GTA IV lets you buy a drink at a vending machine and then drink it while walking. That's evolution, right there.
I say, "don't look back"!
Wouldn't surprise me at all if it happened, though.
Good things about Shenmue: the intimacy of the world surpasses GTA, at least.
Though ultimately, playing as a teenage kid mourning the death of his dad and buying cassette tapes in convenient stores in the process probably isn't as much fun as, say, riding your real-life bike to a landfill and throwing rocks at rats.
It needs snap. You know?
Can we have a new JSR now?
Probably BS.. it's not Shenmue 3 anyway. :(
@108: @108: @108:
I respect your opinions and all but my Shenmue fanboy side wants me to punch you in the face. The game still has a good story though.
These games are not going to hold up well I would think. Just thinking about moving those boxes on the docks makes me angry...I would prefer if they just made a new one.
This is so cool, it might actually make me buy another Wii.
I remember being blown away by the first game on the dreamcast and gagging for a sequel ever since, just never seemed to show up in the local games stores.
lol here we go again with the sailors lolz
Working at the harbour was probably the first real job i ever had.
@Dits:
The DC version of all it's games looks better.
This is great news.
If buying this game would increase the chances of Shenmue 3 ever seeing the light of day, I'd buy it.
Having played the original on DC I don't know if I'd be willing to make myself play through it again, unless some changes were made to make it more "user friendly". I'll still buy it though.
Rather have Shenmue 3.
Anyways not interested in picking this up.
Just wondering, were there any games that took up at 3+ discs that didn't at least have a cult following?
hello people in this thread: Shenmue 2 was available in the States on original Xbox. I get the depressing feeling there are a lot of warezers posting, as there always are for Dreamcast topics. :(
@UNDERSTAR: The game has a good atmosphere, and an excellent sense of intimacy, an intimacy on-par with the point-and-click adventures that some people love so much.
I'm not saying that it's a bad game; just that, at this point, everything Shenmue did well -- and/or did greatly -- has been done better. Take this to mean "Shenmue was hugely influential!" if you want.
To put a more positive spin on my opinions, you could say that I'm saying "It better be a complete remake, a sequel, or nothing!"
The slightly negative way to put it is to say "Just play it again on the Dreamcast."
Seriously, shoe-horning waggle into there isn't going to be good.
Now, in continuation of my criticism: as a "game designer" myself, Shenmue as a series of "games" went south in the tenement tower in Shenmue II, where you had to climb to the top by crossing rickety wooden planks on each floor, between the up stairs and the down stairs. The "QTE" had been used, until then, as a way to represent cinematic, flashy chase or fight sequences. Making me press the left and right buttons on the D-pad to avoid falling felt so alarmingly tasteless.
Man, I could probably write ten thousand words on Shenmue's intentions and impact re: game design.
Obviously I'd rather have Shenmue 3, but I'd still pick this up.. Shenmue 2 was a huge improvement over the original.
Remember Joy? :)
@KrylonBlue: The success of this game would bring about a Shen 3.
And hey, I like this idea. Bring back a very unrated game and finally make the Shen 1-2 compatibility work.
@108: @108: You pretty much summed up what I was thinking.
I'll believe it when I have a copy in my hands and not one second before. I've been hurt too many times :(
Well... although they were SUPER DUPER AWESOMELY Great, they were good games. A little boring for this day and age, but hey people play SL. If this sells well, Sega can only listen to our pleas and make Shenmue 3 that'll make up for the shortcomings. I shall purchase the game if it comes just for Sega to take notice... Well unless of course they read my posts and don't think they're bullshit :( But I doubt that.
If true, I would buy it. Yes, yes I would.
@BlackStones:
I'm looking for a sailor.
@Dits:
YES, PLEASE.
I would so be pre-ordering this if it was true. Shenmue is still one of my favorite games and if there is an option to get BOTH together in one case (without having to run some PAL convertor on my DC to play Shenmue 2) I'll be over it (I don't own Shenmue 2 anymore, reason I would be even more incline to get this if is real)
@108: - "Good things about Shenmue: the intimacy of the world surpasses GTA, at least."
Agreed. Another great post!
I'll buy 5 copies if this is real :|
Please, please, pleeeeeeeeeease ^_^
Argh! Kotaku think's my words ain't fit for all your eyes! (Maybe it's time to put some smut in?)
OK, who do I have to sleep with to make this happen?
@ph15h HATES ph15h: *correction* weren't where were was. I really need to look back at missed contractions.
I'd buy every copy that comes to my area just to get a shenmue 3.
That would be sweet. Although i really would like to see a next gen version of shenmue.
From what I heard Shenmue 3 was already started but canceled. Hell, just use the same old Shenmue 1/2 graphics to make Shenmue 3. Finish the damn story.
Anyway, Im going to buy these games just because I want to support Shenmue 3. I beat Shenmue 1 and 2 so many times I dont care to beat it again.
The only thing I think Shenmue lacked was fighting. Needs more fighting. All those chances to level up moves and get them to their master form is wasted. Because by the time a few moves get to a high level the game is already over.
Plus the fighting in Shenmue is awesome. I hope it wont change. Its like a Virtua Fighter Beatumup.
I think I talked too much. I probably sound like a fanboy. Or you probably knew that from my avatar.
You had me at Shenmue. Added waggle-wiggle-jiggle-shake-n-bake
-chicken-noodle-soup with a soda on the side, I don't care, I'm sold.
I would not buy this considering I have played both of them, and I have no Wii to speak of, but I hope this ends up true. More Shenmue fans means a greater chance of finally seeing a third.
I see, this will be great, I see, this will gain funds for Shenmue 3, I see....im looking for a man, Do you know anything about the Three Blades
I think I'll have another. Let's get sweaty!
People are forgetting that this would be selling on a console that doesn't have GTA4 on.
I heard that the reason they brought it to XBOX rather than PS2 was because the PS2 didn't have the right technical specifications to run it, but then again if they can't make a PS3 game load for 30 seconds for a single line (Sonic)...
Does Sega have a warehouse number 8 we can call?
If this means a possibility of Shenmue 3, I'm all for it.
