Rockstar Games and Future Green Entertainment announced a new album from The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern, titled "Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV".
The eight GTA-exclusive tracks DJ Green Lantern wrote for Liberty City's "The Beat" radio show, which he hosts, will be on the album, along with eight new songs inspired by the game. He's joined by some major hip-hop, reggae and R&B artists, including Busta Rhymes, Wyclef, Fat Joe, Styles P and Fabolous, and several other new artists and talent from DJ Green Lantern's label will feature on the album as well.
The Rockstar team has somewhat of a reputation for its particularity when it comes to musical selections for the game, and executive producer Sam Houser said he's excited about this album and its "true New York flavor." "Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV" will be available digitally on May 20th, to be followed by a physical disc launch at an unspecified date.
Full release follows the jump.
Today, Rockstar Games and Future Green Entertainment are proud to announce the release of an original production album from The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern featuring music from and inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV.Containing eight brand new tracks crafted exclusively for DJ Green Lantern's "Liberty City Invasion" radio show on the in-game radio station "The Beat," as well as eight new songs directly inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV, The Evil Genius DJ Green Lantern has created an epic urban soundtrack. This special album release features an incredible lineup of hip-hop, reggae and R&B superstars including heavyweights Busta Rhymes, Wyclef, Fat Joe, Styles P and Fabolous as well as up-and-coming artists Mavado, Uncle Murder and Future Green Entertainment's own Johnny Polygon, Qadir and more.
Singles include "Where's My Money" from Busta Rhymes and "Nickname" from the brand new artist Qadir. The perfect summer anthem "I'm So Fly," featuring Fat Joe and Fabolous is inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV and while included on the album is not in the game."The Grand Theft Auto games have always featured stunning soundtracks and the amount of eclectic music in Grand Theft Auto IV goes above and beyond anything we have been able to do before" said Sam Houser, Founder and Executive Producer of Rockstar Games, "DJ Green Lantern's contributions give the soundtrack a true New York flavor and we're excited to be releasing his full album to fans."
"From making mixtapes, to being on the radio, to touring with the biggest artists on the planet, and then for the biggest video game title to solicit me to create exclusive music is something most people could only dream about, it's like a graduation," said Green. "Rockstar Games understood what I bring to the table as far as not just presenting music, but creating music."
Green Lantern originally came to prominence in the mixtape scene by consistently featuring exclusive self-produced music with hip-hop superstars like Eminem, Jay-Z, The Beastie Boys, Mike Shinoda's Fort Minor, D-Block, Busta Rhymes, Mobb Deep and many more. This led to an acclaimed career as a proper music producer in his own right which has yielded such Billboard hits as "Number One Spot" by Ludacris and "In The Ghetto" by Busta Rhymes featuring Rick James as well as the street hits Akon "Ghetto" feat. Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac, Uncle Murda's "Bullet, Bullet," and many more. Green Lantern can be heard every week nationally on his Sirius Satellite Radio show.
The Evil Genius Green Lantern makes his official production album debut with the release of Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV. It will be available at all major digital retailers on May 20th with a physical release coming soon.
Grand Theft Auto IV is currently available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system.

Too bad it's not mixed by DJ Premier, but cool idea nonetheless.
My six disc GTA: Vice City Soundtrack still reigns supreme! =P
@DigitalHero:
I hear that!
I was surprised how little i liked on the music stations. Probably only about 3 or 4 songs I like. At the same time it feels weird having a high-speed chase listening to talk radio.
I'm still going to wait and see if they release a boxset... frankly, I could care less about the rap-orientated stations. I just wants me a Liberty Rock Radio, The Journey, Fusion FM and JNR CD set if anything. As I say, the boxset would be lovely, just from a production value/completionist point of view.
I love the music in GTA IV. The fact that Roy Ayers AND Femi Kuti have their own stations blew my mind. Roy AYERS!?! In a video game? Spinning David Axelrod!?! I'm blowing my mind all over again.
Eh... Take off Crackhouse and you'd have a good 102.7 BEAT soundtrack.
DJ Premier's should come next.
Bumps "Stylin"
Needs more Francois K.
Seriously, what is with GTA and rap? The soundtrack that came with the special edition was atrocious enough, and now this? Not to hate on the genre, but there are other types of music to kill hookers to (or whatever your fancy is).
I'm so glad they included that ZIT feature (which, after two weeks is finally working correctly on the Social Club site, I might add). I'm going to have a nice mix of Electro Choc, The Journey, Liberty Rock Radio, Radio Broker and a dash of other songs.
Aw man no Immortal Technique on it? He's from New York... I mean Liberty City!
@Tyber_Zann:
It always worked for me, just took a couple of days to update.
I love the music in GTAIV, glad to see this is comin out
Green Lantern is dope and it's awesome that he is the DJ on the in-game radio show, something I wasn't aware of.
I must agree with nyaz on the disappointment that Immortal technique is not on it.
This is awesome, and hip-hop/rap is not for everybody. The comments show it is always cool to hate music that is popular.Let me name a band that 3 people have heard of equals, now I am cooler than you.
I liek San Juan Sounds best.
I have to vent this somewhere and I have to be honest. I'm not a big music listener. I don't buy all that much music. I haven't got the slightest notion of who Roy Ayers or Femi Kuti are, and it really wouldn't occur to me to bother to find out. My ability to name the song and artist of a modern musical tracks mostly depends on whether the song appeared in Guitar Hero.
That being said, I, with my limited exposure to this kind of thing, am completely underwhelmed by the radio stations in GTA IV, and the choice of music in particular.
Vice City was quite good, as it contained a lot of tunes I actually knew, and the ones I didn't were bright and catchy. I didn't like San Andreas at first, thinking it was far too rap/hip hop heavy, but again there were a few songs I knew and liked, and the ones I didn't know gradually grew on me. Even some of the songs on the gangsta stations started to grow on me some, and I can now say that I like the San Andreas soundtrack.
GTA IV? Completely flat and boring as far as I can tell. No recognisable crowd pleasers for people like me, and for all of the playtime I've put in, I have to say that nothing I've heard has grown on me. I mean, not a single song or piece of music ever comes on that I've come to like and appreciate. I kind of default to the Jazz station or the one with the robot DJ, but that's mostly because the others vascillate between grating on the nerves or boring me to tears. Actually, Vladivostok is probably the only station that has one or two songs growing on me, surprisingly enough.
I really wish they'd have put one or two Gen-X type radio stations and thrown a few more bones to people like me. I'm very unimpressed by the music selection this time round.
Once more, this is my subjective opinion, if you don't feel the same way, I'm happy for you.
Sorry for off-topic, just sharing:
I went to a Eastern European party on Saturday and there was a guy who looked exactly like Roman (especially the shirt). I asked if he played GTA4, he never heard of it, when I told him, that he's wearing a similar shirt to a video game character, he first laughed and when got slightly offended, like if I was suspecting him of being a fanboy gamer and dressing like a character, when in reality it's just him.
Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, or Guy Gardner?
I got a nickname for all MY guns...how about you?
Actually my fav GTA4 song is Swiss Beats "Top Down".
@etchasketchist: "The fact that Roy Ayers AND Femi Kuti have their own stations blew my mind."
Yeah. I caught that and went WHA? That's awesome. I haven't heard anything from Roy Ayers in awhile. Glad to see he's still around. And I dig the station he's on. It's good crusin music.
@Tyber_Zann: "Seriously, what is with GTA and rap?"
NYC/Liberty City. Birthplace of Rap/Hip Hop. It's a big rap town.
I'm not a big rap music fan, but I understand the reason rap is such a big part of the series. It's edgy and very popular, just like the games.
All I want is a CD of the Fusion radio station.
That Busta Rhymes song is hot, and I don't consider myself a hip hop/rap fan. I guess gangbangin' gets me in the mood.
@cordsie: I have to agree. I'm a huge music listener (listening right now), but I have to agree with you about GTAIV's soundtrack. It's wack. Don't get me wrong theres that Shaggy song that kicks ass but mostly the radio stations sound uninspired.
The only other GTA I've played is San Andreas. The sound track suited the game well and help to establish the feel of the game. Unfortunately, I do not get this same feeling from GTAIV's radio stations. The music just seems like a big mix of mediocrity.
I really enjoy the soundtrack *because* I don't recognize most of the songs. If find it very refreshing, since it allows me to make connections with the music because of GTA, and not because I've heard it somewhere else.
personally, my mind was blown when i heard the 'live at the barbeque' track with nas (his debut on record) on main source's joint off the classics station. also hearing 'strange times' from the black keys was weird just because it's so new...
Another "boo" for focusing solely on the rap side.
I, like others, find the GTAIV soundtrack mildly disappointing compared to previous GTAs,
but it's way better and more diverse than this myopic collection would lead one to believe.
The Journey and San Juan Sounds FTW!
Cool! GTA games have really good selection of Hip Hop music in general
@heretrix: He's still performing too, saw him live a year ago. I'm a huge fan but he came of rather grumpy, if not to hostile. The performance was sub par too, it was a big dissapointment. His music is still great and he sounds quite likeable on the radio so I'm glad I can now put it away as him having a bad day.
yep, I think the GTA IV soundtrack is terrible as well. It's fine to have a station or two playing music that isn't well known but the majority of this stuff is hardly a classic or current hit.
I love Dominion by SoM but who the hell is going to remember that one? It's not exactly a classic rock track and not something that acts as the soundtrack to a bank job. At least in Saint's Row you had the MP3 player so you could avoid the crap and go straight to the songs you did like.
You can't have a car chase to most of it because it's too laid back, too tuneless or plainly just lame. Jazz? Who the hell plays GTAIV and has a car chase to Jazz? A Marley station? Eh why?
Vice City (and even SA) had great mix of genres, well known songs and more obscure stuff. IV is just a waste as a soundtrack to an action game. Trying to represent and authentic city radio culture is nice in theory but most people don't play video games to listen to 24/7 Marley and Ukranian radio.
Shockingly, it appears different people like different kinds of music. News at 11.
@Calhoun: which is where GTA IV fails. It doesn't represent a variety of music to appeal to different audiences. If that was the case why two reggae stations, multiple electronica and rap? Why not one opera station instead? A classical station? Where's the pop station for the Kelly Clarkson audience? Where's the metal station? What about a movie soundtrack station? Where's the contemporary rock station? Where's the classic hip hop station?
Biggest selling game of the year has a music selection aiming for a tiny niche audience.
@ArcaneDevice: "If that was the case why two reggae stations?" One was reggae, one was dancehall. Similar but different.
"A classical station?" GTA3
"What about a movie soundtrack station?" Never gonna happen.
"Where's the contemporary rock station?" Liberty Rock Radio
"Where's the classic hip hop station?" The Classsics
"Where's the pop station for the Kelly Clarkson audience?" It's illegal to sell the game to minors.
No Papoose? cannot compute. I am really glad Houser at least did some homework. Then again, some of the featured artists on that list is probably looking for work; Crack?!.
Yes, I do agree that San Juan sounds are the best!; being raised from southside LBC and all. Nothing like "Today was a good day" blasting from a videogame. I didn't have to look too far to find a lowrider as a child, just had to peek out the window.
Orchestrated Synths and low-heavy bass...mmmmMM. Vice city is close, but San Juan sounds were part of my life.
I like Green Lantern but I like Premier.. its a shame they didn't get anyone else ... and I agree there should be a reggae station .. but the San Juan channel doesn't have as many tracks as I would like.. but hey if you think about it its definitely like regular radios.. SIRIUS FTW
ph15h HATES ph15h & E-Grizzle & pimpsc00by I can't believe you all mentioned the demigod of producers DJPremier. I don't have GTA IV so I don't know what time frame the game is held in. But if the game is held within the late 80s to late 90s there should be at least on fucking song produced by DJPremier. GTA San Andreas had BYS from Gang Starr. On another note hit me up via e-mail to talk about some DJ Premier stuff. (djmanoloco@hotmail.com) DJManoloco
