GTA IV's PS3 Problems To Be Fixed Via Firmware Update?

GTA IV has some problems. Some are pretty great, but most have resulted in freezes and lock-ups, which aren't great. And while a recent patch has fixed some of those problems, it hasn't fixed all of them, leaving a lot of GTA IV players still in the lurch. If that's you and you own a 60GB PS3, help may be on the way, as a poster over on the official PS3 forums has received an email from Take-Two support, who apparently told him Sony are working on a quick firmware update for the console, which will hopefully fix the issues 60GB users (who were the first to report problems with the game) have been having. Take with salt, yada yada.

  • Are they going to fix the 360 lockup issues too?

  • @MoeB: As far as I know the 360 hasn't had nearly the same amount of problems the PS3 has had with this game.

  • Maybe I've missed it but have Microsoft/Take-Two/Rockstar even mentioned the lockup issue on the 360?

  • There are still lockup issues on 360 though.. And I would like a patch please.

  • @MoeB: If there was a problem I'm sure they'd fix it.

  • @Huckleberry: Watching my flatmate play on his 360 I'd beg to differ. His game (360) has locked up far more than mine. It also suffers from serious stuttering and momentary pauses. My PS3 has had that loading issue a couple of times, but turning of the net connection sorts that out. It hasn't frozen in game once.

    Just luck I guess.

    @Manny:
    There is a problem.I was playing it the other night when it locked and red lighted and it still hangs up on scenes.It's done it ever since I picked it up on GTA launch day.I didn't get the full red light apparently from what some other Kotaku folks told me.

  • Great. So now can they fix the Stevie missions so I can get my frickin 100%? I really, really don't want to play this again.

  • @enewtabie:
    lol 4 red lights or 2 because 4= unplugged AV cord, 2= overheat. It is extremely hard to overheat an xbox unless you rap it in towels for an hour.

    @deathtastic:
    3 redlights..Right top corner not lit and middle was green..Had to reset it about 10 times before it worked again.
    It never really locks up unless I'm playing GTA4,so I know there are issues.

  • @will: Yeah, maybe. Personally I haven't heard of any issues with the game except from the one guy I know with a PS3, and he was having trouble with the online.

    I'm sure there are sporadic cases on both sides, I just figured it was mostly a PS3 issue. Then again maybe that one is just talked about more on Kotaku.

  • I wonder what it could be? I have a launch 60gig and never had any problems. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.

  • I have the 40gig model, but its been running flawlessly from day 1. And i have been playing it alot. My mate, however, had the game be the last disc in there before his Xbox RROD because he played it for 3 hours straight O.o..

    He played it pretty cool, but i think its kind of sad that as consumers we spend hundreds of dollars on something completley aware and okay with the fact we KNOW it will break down within the first year... :(

    @Lachoy:
    I dunno either. I too own a launch 60GB and it hasn't frozen ONCE during 35 hrs of the single player campaign. *knocks on wood*

    Multiplayer however froze every time until that patch was released though.

  • @Lachoy: Yes, me too but it seems the problem is quite common.

  • Image of ca$h ca$h at 05:39 AM on 05/13/08 *

    @Huckleberry:
    That's not true at all. My roommate owns the 360 version, and I've seen it free half a dozen times (literally - 6 times) while watching him play it. And since I've got my own copy in my room, I don't see him play it that much.

    See my above post about the PS3 version.

  • My 60 was freezing at random times and refusing to go past the load screen. Then I turned off networking and it worked fine. After the 1.01 update, I've been playing with no problems and networking on. Haven't been playing online much yet though.

  • @will: Locking up? Serious stuttering? Momentary pauses? Damn. I've been playing the game since April 29 on my launch 360 and haven't experienced a single hiccup. Ask your flatmate to clear his 360's memory cache and see if that alleviates some problems:

    Go to the System blade and select Memory, highlight the HD, press Y, then enter: X, X, LB, RB, X, X. Click Yes when prompted.

    A lot of people seem to have friends with 360s who are having a horrid time playing this game. You guys should convince them to go on blogs like these and send in tips and obviously, first and foremost, COMPLAIN TO MS AND R* so they can be made aware of the issue... the squeaky wheel gets the grease and PS3 users have been quite squeaky.

    I've had no problems with my (near) launch 360. *knock on wood*

  • I own the PS3 version and have only had the game freeze on me once. It's great to hear their patching it, but I'm already tired of GTA and don't plan on playing it again anytime soon.

  • *joins lockup tales campfire* Mine refused to load once after I had moved to a diff. tv, had to delete the save, but meh, all I had done was harass anyone talking on their mobiles.

  • i have a 60gig and it hasnt frozen on my once, odd (in a good way!)

  • @okenny :): "A lot of people seem to have friends with 360s who are having a horrid time playing this game."

    Strange, isn't it. Yet the xbox forums seem strangely bereft of performance complaints in comparison to the PS3 forums.

  • I got the 60 gig and am many hours in with no problems. I wonder what the specific variable is that is causing the problem for the people that have had one.

  • Image of ca$h ca$h at 06:15 AM on 05/13/08 *

    @okenny :):
    My roommate is one of those people who just doesn't care and won't stand up for their rights as consumers (ie the average person). I was more pissed off when his first 360 died than he was.

    @Rotmm: Hey man *puff puff pass* I'm not dogging you man! lay off me man... man :(

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 06:24 AM on 05/13/08 *

    @ca$h: That's how people get screwed over. Remember the hell people raised with the RROD when it first started.. MS paid 1.01 billion to service the issue. Halo 3 disk scratches, people bitched and change happened. GH3 Wii... people bitched. I don't see much bitching about this issue even though that one Rockstar rep Kotaku spoke with stated they've heard the complaints and were looking into it. It's just sad that people are experiencing this and not complaining. Maybe they like being screwed :(

  • Well, the .1 update fixed the lock-up issues I was having. Couldn't get into a game with the PSN connected sometimes. Must've been a simple TCP timeout issue.

  • @Rotmm

    I guess you missed this 32 page thread for one:

    [forums.xbox.com]

    Gotta look in the right place is all. :)

  • @VishusBurn:
    Same here. Maybe they should compare when their PS3s were made?

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 06:39 AM on 05/13/08 *

    @warlock7: I'm wondering if this is due to bad data on the disk or some kinda artifact that makes it hang when disk data is read badly? Lots of people having this problem have other games work fine it seems... we most remember this is in the hands of 4+ million 360 users. Even with a bad disk rate of %0.1 is still 4000 people. and that's enough to complain but maybe not enough to be heard :(

  • @Garo:

    Oct 2006 for me, and I have the freezing problem.

  • @ryivanV2: Or hasn't broke down since launch. Maybe my 360 is juicing. Anyhow no problems on my end.

  • I've got a launch PS3 60 gig and no problems at all... yet. DUN DUN DUN!!!!!!!!! . . . . (rumble rumble).

  • This may be a silly request, but if anyone with Kotaku reads this; could you keep reporting on the GTA 4 issue, so that Sony may one day fix it? I still haven't gotten more than 1 minute in, and I have tried everything.

  • The night after I first used the services of a hooker in GTAIV, I got the 3RLoD :(

    True story.

  • man, i got off pretty lucky then. i have a 60gb and while i did have freezes... it was due to the network which got fixed last week.

    i remember getting the game and was so nervous thinking that it may freeze in the intro (one of the types of freezes i heard about at the time)

  • @severeon: That sounds awful man! :( I wonder if it's your disc or your console...

  • I have a 60gb and not having any problems. Works great!

  • @gamesronlygames: Thanks for your input! Man, all these other people must be crazy! Your individual experience clearly defines and represents the current experience had by all!

  • I have a 60G, I was getting the freeze at the start of the game, but that hasn't been an issue since the patch. No other lock ups.

  • As for the 360 end I have 40 friends playing it and none had any problems with the game. A few times I'd lose a friend who was on the West coast while everyone else is on the East coast in multiplayer. But that isn't really a game problem more than a connection problem.

    20 hours in and haven't had any problems besides getting pissed that I failed a mission or two.

  • i have a 60 gig, got a few lock ups, mostly random tho, had to restart one set of missions cause it wouldn't load for me, then played more of the game, saved and it was fine.

    could have been my router tho because it was giving me issues before this as well but i was working fine with no lockups before the patch was issued

  • @MightyHealthy: Always use protection!

  • Image of badasscat badasscat at 07:43 AM on 05/13/08 *

    My 60GB PS3 problems were fixed as soon as the network issues got sorted out.

  • I've had a few lockups on my 360: the game freezes then it says it can't be read anymore. I reboot and presto! It works again. This is a console issue, not a GTA4 issue, since the same thing happens in COD4. I think I have literally lost count of how many 360s I have replaced.

    I didn't get it for the PS3 because of the DLC but perhaps most importantly because 90% of my friends have the 360 version and I wanted to play online.

    My frustration with the game has nothing to do with occasional hardware lockups.

  • I have the 360 version and I've had boatloads of problems. One big issue seems to be that at random points the disc stops loading. I'll be driving and suddenly objects stop appearing, the high res textures don't load and the game freezes. This has happened 7 or 8 times so far. I've encountered some of the "funny" glitches too, but that's to be expected. Surprisingly I haven't encountered any of these problems in multiplayer, beyond normal lag weirdness. Also, the texture pop-in on my system seems far more noticeable than any of the videos I've seen. Some times a trashcan will appear out of nowhere directly in front of me.

  • I've never experienced any freezing with GTAIV and my launch 60GB, but there was a lot of stuttering and skipping when I loaded it up the second time after playing the morning of the midnight launch. That problem went away before the patch. My problem is that I can screw around in Party mode with my friends, but I can't get in any MP matches without it saying "The connection to one or more players has been lost. Returning to single player". This is fuckin' annoying because I convinced at least 5 people who weren't planning on getting this game to get it because of the fun matches we could have...

  • @MightyHealthy: Streetwalkers are at a higher risk of STD contagion, man. Still, call a doctor. With a couple weeks of not using the package it'll clear right up.

  • @Lachoy:
    Same, plus mine is very often left folding/downloading stuff overnight before playing several hour GTA marathons, no problems yet.
