Smedley - MMOs To Sell PS3s

John Smedley loves his massively-multiplayer online games, and well he should, being a co-founder of Verant Interactive and now President of Sony Online Entertainment. Is he taking this love a bit too far in suggesting that one day MMOs will be a reason to buy a PlayStation 3?

I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term — there's going to be some great ones on the PS3. You're not going to find "The Agency" on the [Xbox] 360.
Seeing as Microsoft seems to be terrified of MMO games, I'd have to say he has a point. Well, that and the fact that it's a Sony game. A selling point though? I don't know. Considering the track record of most MMO console games (Everquest Online Adventures, which refuses to die), I'm leaning towards no here...though perhaps that's because I have a PC that currently runs anything on the market. Or maybe the concept is just too foreign for me to grasp. A console-selling MMO? I'll believe it when I see it.

  • Since when have MMO's been simple enough to be able to use a controller with?

  • Age of Conan isn't an MMO?

  • Pfft, screw exclusive games, the PS3 has exclusive genres!

  • Hes absolutely right, I wont find the Agency on the 360.

But I will find APB on the 360.

    This argument = stupid.

  • I think the main thing is that there's never been an MMO built specifically for a console market with a post WoW mindset.
I believe wholeheartedly that it can work. People just got to give it a chance to.

  • @Flawless101:

If GTA was every player in the same city at the same time, thats an MMO right there that would be easy (and fun!) enough to play with a controller. Specially if you got a USB keyboard or the little chatpad thing plugged in.

Of course... every car would be stolen, every street would be a gunfight and the police would be terrified to leave their station...

  • Actually It wouldn't be very smart to have a overly successful MMO(such as WOW) on either system. Ask a WOW owner how many other games they bought in the last year. The system to game tie-ratios would plummet. I believe that if Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo were smart they would not get involved. Now with that being said, if the game was a sony published game than they would stand to make alot of money each month through subscriptions. Microsoft does not need to do that as they get the Live subscriptions which honestly I believe is the smarter path. It doesn't hurt sales and lets other companies reap some of the benefits. That's all I'm sayin'.

  • I thought predictions are best based on past experiences. This seems like just a baseless claim. A hope for the future.

Let's wait with the corporate talk about stuff that isn't really tested yet please.

  • Since many PS3 owners brag about free online, what makes him think they will want to pay a subscription for one game?

I don't think it'll be a selling point at all, but that's my opinion. When I finally get one (so poor ...), it won't be because of an MMO ...

  • Age of Conan and APB were already mentioned. There's also Champions Online and Huxley. And FFXI that's already on there. 360 has as many if not more MMOs in the pipeline than PS3 does but I guess nobody told Mr. Smedley.

  • FFXI, despite having numerous advantages on the PC (resolution and graphics can be hugely improved with it) is still fairly popular on the PS2; as well as a few people on PS3 and 360. Now, FFXI didn't exactly move consoles, but it did move $100+ HDD addons. An MMO could very easily move consoles-- Microsoft and Sony would probably bend over backwards to get a WoW port.

  • @woggerman:

    Good points all around.

  • "Seeing as Microsoft seems to be terrified of MMO games, I'd have to say he has a point."

Isn't Age of Conan, Champions Online, APB, and KOTOR(said for next-gen consoles) MMO all going to be on the xbox 360

  • This will never be true if there are still monthly subscription fees. Console gamers just aren't conditioned for it.

  • Most PS owners seem to pride themselves in that they don't have to pay $3 bucks a month (13 month card 40 bucks online) for LIVE.

Somehow I doubt they're going to want to shell out $10-20 a month to play one MMO on PS3.

  • PS3 owners who want to play MMO's? Isn't that a niche in a niche? I may be a Sony fanboy but I don't like the way this PR tastes

  • All speculation doesn't mean shit until there is an actual MMO out on a console and it hits a good amount of users.

Time will tell but I don't care much enough to wonder.

  • I'm not a fan of the genre, but I think the time has come for MMO games to become a serious player in the console market.

  • Well Warhawk in definition is a Massively Multiplayer Online game. Never said anything about it having to be an RPG :P. Plus with Metal Gear Online, The Agency, and Home's online integration, he does have a valid argument.

  • I still want a MMO with the Devil May Cry combat system. :-(

  • EQOA was an amazing game. I hope to god they release a follow up on PS3.

  • @KidU: huh? Xbox owners pay a subscription and microtransactions are taking off on all consoles. PC gamers are the ones that are not willing to pay to play online games (at least for non-mmo's).

  • ...and i don't even know what The Agency is. i've yet to see a good MMO anyways, which is probably why i was looking forward to APB.

  • @TheHun:

They pay $50 a year for Xbox live, but they don't pay a monthly fee to play one game. Well unless they're playing FFXI on the 360.

Maybe MMOs could be successful on consoles, but I doubt it. The games rarely require a lot out of your computer so anyone can run it, and you would have to use a keyboard no matter what platform you play it on. Personally i just don't see them taking off on consoles.

  • What MMOs? Is this another one of those Sony games that they string out at every press event but never release?

Also, APB and Huxley say hello.

  • @DARTH_TIGRIS:
Paying the Live fee + subscription would really suck ESPECIALLY since most of the features that make Live good have been a standard in MMO games for a while.
Obviously you aren't paying just for that, but you are paying.

  • Personally I think it's only the natural progression of things however for it to be successful developers are going to have to think outside of the standard MMORPG box and attempt to intergrate a faster play stlye that uses the controller effectively.

(Think COD4's leveling system with GTAIV's gameplay and mechanics. Although for it to work there would have to be only 1 Liberty City that all users inhabit.)

    Just my $.02

@CCCombobreaker: I own a 360 and play FFXI on both PC and 360...Most likely because I'm not a cheap and dirty bastard.

    Just picking, btw. :D

  • @CCCombobreaker: What are you talking about? Of course they pay the monthly fees@Manny: Yeah and where the hell is Huxley? Couldnt find that game to say hello if you tried.

  • @Flawless101:

*cough* the PS3 is mouse/keyboard ready since launch *cough*

  • I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term - there's going to be some great ones on the PS3. You're not going to find "The Agency" on the [Xbox] 360.

Please let me know when I can find Age of Conan, Huxley and above all else, Champions Online on PS3.

    Yours Truly,

MMORPG Fan karasu is my homeboy

  • @Scott3D: I have no idea what happened to the game but since the entry for this pissing match is so low I thought I'd throw it out there.

You don't really need more than a title for your game anymore for it to crop up in PR bullshit as a selling point.

  • @Guild_Navigator:

Champions Online is a superhero MMORPG that is being made with consoles inmind to play more as an action game with fast paced battles and action controls.

So in any sense, he's not really making a strong point, if a point at all.

@DARTH_TIGRIS: That's an interesting point you've just made there.

  • Yeah because we all know how well MMOs do on consoles. O_o

Seriously, The industry is colapsing because of the uninformed. As someone said, opinions should be based on past experience, not things some random guy pulled out of his ass.

  • @rzac30:
Warhawk is not a MMO. its 32 players max. MMOs have hundreds to thousands persistently in the same world.

Battlefield 2/2142 is more a MMO than warhawk, and that's not even remotely close to a MMO.

I don't believe The Agency really qualifies as one either since its heavily instanced missions w/ just a few other players (3 max).

  • @CCCombobreaker: PC gamers didn't either till they started charging them.

MMO's on consoles have potential, and I can see MS/Sony pushing them in a big way if they become a hit. Microtransactions are the road we are headed on. I wonder how much PC gamers spend on in-game crap nowadays.

  • I believe I would re-state what our friend from EA, Mr. Peter Moore would say ...

    "Let's get it going already"

Sony is notorious for touting their lips about UP and COMING projects, games, features, etc. ... but has repeatedly FAILED in almost all accounts.

IMO - Mr. Smedlely AND Sony needs to shut their trap until a formal annoucement is made about any upcoming projects, games, or features until they have a FIRM release date.

Im not sure about the rest of you guys, but I am sure am sick of listening to Sony rant about this and that - only to be kept in anticipation until Im bored of it (Home), or be highly dissappointetd (LAIR & Motostorm).

If Sony needs- I got a bunch of OLD boots lying around that I could ship to their execs as they are running low on footwear to shove into their PIEholes!

  • I find it ironic he's mentioning MMO's when squaresoft is making an exclusive one for the 360...

And every MMO sony has taken part in has crumbled.

  • Haha I love the name Smedley...

I can hear the name echo down halls of a bitter grey man's estate :)

  • @CCCombobreaker:

    Or Phantasy Star Universe?

  • Oh boy....LoL

Then I guess you can say that your not gonna see Age of Conan on the PS3, right?

We all also have to remember the you can play Final Fantasy XI on the XBOX 360 in HD while the PS2 version looks like crap on the PS3. But that is niether here or there. It's just more craptastic trash talking to for us fanboys to salivate over..lol

  • I know many people who still play FF online on PS2 &3, so I guess that's what he may be referring too. I could see a console MMO doing well but Sony would really have to beef up on "in game & cross platform" communications. Even doing something as simple as including a headset in the box would start to help towards this end.

  • @string_theory: Well that just means it's more in the spirit of PSO/PSU. I don't know much about The Agency having only read one short preview, but I would still call PSO an MMO, though I know some would beg to differ, and I would feel The Agency is one as well as long as there are some areas, like lobbys or shops, where the masses can interact.

  • @string_theory:

Hey I pay 50 for 1 year? Where do I get this $40 for 13 months

  • Image of slomo788 slomo788 at 12:31 PM on 05/12/08 *

"that's because I have a PC that currently runs anything on the market."

Kojima would never say something like that...

  • @rzac30:

Does warhawk have story elements to it? And do they keep updating iymt? I seriously don't know, might consider a PS3 if they do

  • @CCCombobreaker: Well I hate to bust your bubble but Age of Conan for PC/360 is gonna allow for use of the 360 controller even on the PC...sooo, uuummm?

  • My brother bought a PS2, a network adapter (this was before they came standard) and a hard drive JUST to play Final Fantasy XI. So, they can be.

  • @v12qborony:
just sign up at cheapassgamer.com and look in the forum. they have a thread always showing where the best deals are.

Right now i beleive you can get it at Buy.com
    [www.buy.com]
    for $44

and if you use google checkout its an additional $10 off
    [www.buy.com]

making it $34 incudling shipping (free shipping)

  • lol i love it when PR guys say "you won't find this game on our competitors console" well no shit, considering your A, making it B, its exclusive!

Then again, Microsoft don't seem to want to enter the MMO business. Sony have already done quite a few on PC. Then again as far as i'm aware FFXI is an MMO and on 360. Phantasy star, although not a typical MMO is still an mmo on 360.

  • @LeChuck: Phantasy Star Online (360)

  • Why no red eyes of dispair?
