Steve at PlayNoEvil noted this little news story, which involves two Chinese gold farmers who have pulled in over $200K USD being arrested in China. Why? How, exactly? Well, it would appear that one of the pair felt they were being swindled out of profits and reported his partner to the police:
Chengdu's Shuangliu county has arrested two virtual item and currency traders, surnamed Li and Zhang, focused on tapping out The9's (Nasdaq: NCTY) licensed MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW), reports Chengdu Evening News. Police arrested the pair after Li reported Zhang for unfair revenue distribution. Going into business last August, the gold miners accumulated more than 20 employees with 20 computers to generate RMB 1.6 million in seven months of dealing.
Oopsies. I'll be nosing around for more on this story (like exactly what the pair was arrested for), but if any intrepid readers come across anything, send it my way. As Steve at PlayNoEvil notes, "Turn up the Irony Meter to 11. After all, with all of the complaints in the US about gold farming, it takes the Chinese to stand up and do something about it."

Isn't he (the one that tattled) also gonna get himself busted - although that MIGHT not be the case, or to a lesser degree in the US, China... I dunno.

The Chinese may be less subtle, but the oppresion of America is twicefold.
Wow. It's a damn video game.
But, seriously, couldn't the police be using their time more wisely like oooooh I don't know, a MURDER?
Their punishment? Farming 1 gold for each and every wow player.
They made $200k? That's a lot of unpaid tax, and that's what they will be prosecuted for.
@Lamburger Helper: Comrades don't hurt eachother, amirite?
@Lamburger Helper:
Yes, because police cant be focused on all kinds of things. Only murder!
@Albanian_Killa:
It is about unpaid taxes, not a "video game".
90% of how RMT markets are able to continue to facilitate their money making is Fraud. you use a credit card with them at some point they use it later to buy game codes. or they purchase wholesale credit card numbers from hackers to facilitate their business. Their bottom line is mostly zero since they steal it all to make money.

This seems a bit... silly. What, the US is going to send commandos into China to hunt down gold farmers?
Who ELSE could do something about Chinese gold farmers??
Best news I've heard all year.
@EnigmaNemesis:I've honestly wondered why the Chinese Government allows RMT on the scale that it goes on within their controlled borders. That's millions and millions of dollars going into private hands and they aren't seeing a dime of it, ever.
For such acts, I would have honestly thought that they would have woken up to that long ago and had most RMTers in prison camps and impounded their income for themselves.
That guy is a genius for reporting his partner.

Hahaha, the Chinese didn't arrest these people because they were gold farming, they arrested them for avoiding taxes(ie- "unfair revenue distribution"). In other words, the government was mad that they weren't getting a piece of the action
There are only two certainties in life, death and taxes. That was my thought when I read this story on the front page, and I see some people here agree with me.
If you played Lineage II at launch, you got to experience massive interguild group movements to "Kill the chinese guys"
no joke. they were everywhere farming every spot, guilded together, no english.
it was like 1 of 3 things to do in the game. totally excusable racism. fun.
unpaid tax: WHO CARES
if i bought an ipod and resold it to a neighbor down the street, DOES HE HAVE TO PAY TAX? NOOOOOOOOOOOO. the resale of ANYTHING does NOT contribute to any nation's gdp, therefore, the "unpaid tax" theory is FALSE. i mean, if they farmed that gold, its rightfully theirs. they can do whatever the eff they want.
the only reason they are getting arrested for is the breach of terms (which they agree upon before playing), NOT unpaid tax.
Good job China! XD
Not that I think gold farming is Chengdu's biggest issue at the moment.
The whole tectonic plate movement thing does demand a bit more attention than RMT.
