Good morning class. Your cool substitute teacher Owen is here to let you goof off and get away with shit that Mr. Crecente doesn't allow. For the next two days anyway. Just so long as you keep your spitwads and paper airplanes away from me.
So, uh, here's your reading list. Komrade Kayce, please pass these out to the rest of the class. Thank you. Be prepared to discuss the nature of symbolism, specifically themes regarding coping with death, in "My PlayStation 2.5". Now, let me pour a mug from this thermos that is absolutely nothing but coffee and don't you little bastards dare suggest otherwise or spread rumors.
On another note, does anyone have any useful or economical suggestions for doing console video-game footage captures onto a Macintosh (with no RCA video board input)? I've tried the Pinnacle "Dazzle" video transfer for Mac. It's a piece of shit. Can't even get a signal. This question is germane to something Adam Barenblat and I hope to deliver next weekend.

Mr. Good as a sub is like a good dog. He is good.
Sorry, had to throw the obligatory Fake Crecente joke in there. XD
Stuff that Mr. Crecente doesn't allow?
WOOHOO!!! FREEDOM!!!!!!!
*fetches Fanboy-101 handbook*
All of my college experience has been revolving around working by hand and Adobe Illustrator, so I can't really help with your footage problem. Sorry.
As for symbolism, the PS3's death and the 360's survival symbolizes how death can strike anyone at anytime, including the healthiest of people, while leaving the sickly and the reckless to soldier on. Also, Fahey has Snausauges for fingers and can't get enough of A Knight's Tale.
I dont know why, but the title of this post made me crave a sandwich
@Ichidou: Damn you...now I want a sandwich too.
I love this site. I woke up and this was the first thing I read, it's gonna be a good day. Thanks Owen for starting my day off with a smile!!
~Peace~
YAYYYY OWEN IS HERE!
*disco inferno*
Time for a game of Hangman:
_we_
G_o_
_me_ls!
You're damn right I'm going to act up! After all, Mr Crecente isn't here.
@PaddyStardust: I had probably the best sandwich I've had all year today for lunch. And someone bought it for me. Could the day get ANY better? I think NOT.

@Kazzahdrane: Was that person a stripper? Or perhaps a monkey wearing a pair of comfortable trousers? There are many ways a day can be better, and substitute teachers are always a good start. You can do all the stuff a regular teacher wont let you do, and say "Mr Crecente lets us do it" then when Mr Crecente tells you off, you say "Mr Good told us to do it." Bulletproof.
@PaddyStardust: Actually, it was my mother.
So...all of the above?
God that sandwich was amazing. Like, Broken Sword amazing. Almost.
@MelodyKitn:
YES. A thousand times yes. But don't forget:
Modern Studies - Resident Evil 5: Racist?
Get a PC, Owen. I heard they're rather good at video editing.
@Kazzahdrane: Dang, we have Sociology again?! Ugh.. don't forget:
Government and Politics: Terrorism and Jack Thompson
Religion: Uwe Boll, The Next Plague
Current Events: Anti-Gaming In The Media
@Kazzahdrane: Psychology - I perceive my mother as a stripper monkey wearing trousers.
Your childhood must have been awesome.
Ahh, the Dazzle for the Mac is bad? *Sigh*
One would think a quality capture device would exist since a good portion (at least at one point during the Mac's existance) of people purchased it for video editing.
I think that "coffe" looks more like magic tea....YEA SUB'S!!
@Owen:
Short of an actual MacPro setup and the accompanying pro-level capture board, your best bet is probably going to be an Elgato product. I haven't used their external capture boxes for games, but their AlchemyTV product worked fine for capturing game video on my G4.
[faq.elgato.com]
Some info on using one of their higher end products for game video. I guess the next question would be, do you need to play the game though the capture output, or are you doing a splitter/dual display setup, if its the latter you could get away with a cheaper one that has more lag, otherwise you need the 250 minimum. The next step up from there would be a 1394 based capture box like ADS' Pyro, lag on that should be virtually non-existent, though I haven't used it personally so thats a strong should there :)
@MrMcdoobie: I don't do drugs: Lots of good mac video capture products, see my first post here, the Dazzle is just a bit too cheap/laggy for this purpose, I think, although the inability to even get a signal may indicate greater problems :)

@PaddyStardust: Economics: Stripper monkeys wearing trousers buy you lunch!
Philosophy Pop Quiz:
Your mother is a sandwich. Discuss.
Mr Owen sir. Can I go to the bathroom pleeeeez? I'm gonna wet myself!
Owen, why do we have to go to school on the weekend?
Regarding video capture, you can use a video camera that will accept a signal via RCA to digitize footage and then transfer it to your Mac via Firewire. My friend has a Sony DVCAM rig that will even do it on the fly; with my old Canon MiniDV camera I have to record it to tape first.
And, please ignore (as I haven't), the comment from @Malvolio the Magician; I'm afraid he can't distinguish between trolling and helping.
@Kazzahdrane: Science: How to breed stripping monkeys who buy you lunch
So today is the exact opposite of Ban Monday?

@DaiMacculate: Nice find :)
Thanks.
@bass.exe21: Slackoff Saturday?
Recess: Go find a monkey and make a sandwich or whateverIdontcareanymoreIhatekidsanyway
*chugs "coffee"*
@Kazzahdrane: You can't drink the subs coffee, fatty.
@Kazzahdrane: This got out of control somewhere didnt it.
Detention: Write "Stripper monkeys in trousers are not real, and dont give me sandwiches" 100 times.
@Shocky: My mum says I'm not fat, I'm just the son of a stripping monkey and therefore a horrifically mutated creature. Sadly not "special" enough for Charles Xavier's school though.
Anyway, on topic: I really like games. Loads.
@Kazzahdrane: Your mum doesn't say you're fat. Your Wii Fit does. No go cry in the corner you horridly obese yet considerably active in dance child!
Yes, I like games too.
@MelodyKitn: Ahahaha thanks for reminding me of the best parent comment this week. SHE'S SO ACTIVE!!!11
I think it's important to emphasize that the death in "Playstation 2.5" isn't full death, but rather death of the spirit. While the Playstation can still function on its most basic levels, its true purpose - the joie de vivre, if you will - has been snuffed out.
There's also situational irony present with the presence of the 360, as any rational reader would have surely expected the opposite outcome.
All I have to say is..WOW! *goes to back of classroom and reads 'PS3 emulation and how to prevent the R.R.O.D.'*
I've tried the whole connecting game systems to my computer with a Dell branded TV tuner (horrible -- 3 - 5 seconds of lag) and an Adeptec AVC-1400 Gamebridge, which worked really really well. I played through most of Twilight Princess on that thing, which gave me the added bonus of saving a copy of that one really creepy cut-scene where everybody has knives.
I got mine for $9 from woot.com, but looking now, the cheapest I can find one is $40. Oh, capitalism.
Keep in mind that this was on a computer running Windows XP, so I'm completely unsure as to what the Mac support is. I've tried using Dazzle on Mac before, and while I could technically get it up and running, it functioned pretty horribly.
@Makoto: I wonder if we're gonna have a fake Owen anytime soon.
Owen, I'd recommend this product:
[www.pinnaclesys.com]
I use this thing all the time and it works great for me. My tv has a limited number of connections, and some of them don't work, so I play many of my games on the computer screen. It's a Pinnacle branded item but the actual hardware is from Elgato - it comes with EyeTV software. I got mine at Best Buy for $130. One thing to keep in mind is the connections. The video input thing that came with the stick only goes up to S-Video, and I use a 3.5mm to RCA adapter for the audio input. There may be other input pieces out there but I've never bothered to look. It works great for me, so that may be an option for you.
@KM91:
I'm sure we will, but he'll look, sound, and act exactly the same as the fake Brian Crecente.
I've heard that theirs vodka and dead babies in that thermos. :o
I used to use a Mac as a powerpoint presenter about a decade ago, and somehow I had a VCR hooked up to it, so the tape would play on the screen, with realtime typing on top of the picture and sound from both the tape, computer and a mic working all at once. I do not remember how I did it, just that it was a mess of cabling all over, was a mix of RCA, SDI, 1/4 inch and XLR. Not sure that helps though.
@MrMcdoobie: I don't do drugs: No problemo! I really, really hope that this discussion results in Owen coming back with "well I finally tried product X that somebody on Kotaku mentioned" and I'll have a more definitive answer as to which box works the very best for this application; I may have to look into getting one for personal use :)
So people can make ban-worthy comments and not get banned?
Quick everyone "accidentally" empty a box full of pencils on the floor! Then "try" to pick them up but instead "accidentally" end up rolling them around the class room!
We'll teach you to try and educate us ya barstud!
Cool substitute teacher, huh? Are you going to break out your guitar for a mellow jam? :)
"Why are you out of class?"
"I don't know. Mr. Owen said he was going to teach an impromptu Sex-Ed class, but that only the girls were invited..."
@Ichidou: That's what I thought when I first read the title. I was like, subs... mmm tasty.
@MelodyKitn: +1, very funny, awesome. I'd like those classes. Except I'm guest-lecturing the History one.
