Sony makes a games machine. Heck, they make three of them that people are still buying. So they're in competition with Nintendo and Microsoft, who also makes games machines, right? Nope! Kaz Hirai told MCV at this week's SCEE event in Europe that Sony have bigger fish to fry than the world's #1-selling gaming company and the world's #1-selling software company:
I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers' attention.Hear that, Nintendo? You're so one-dimensional. Maybe put an album together, release a movie or two, then you'll be running with the big dogs.So we need to make sure we offer the most compelling entertainment - not videogame entertainment but in entertainment in general. I can't speak for their strategy but I like to think that we've got a very well balanced portfolio with PS3, PSP and you can't discount the PS2.
Hirai: 'We're not competing with Microsoft or Nintendo' [MCV]

Comments
Hmm, I think he meant to say that they're not just competing with Microsoft and Nintendo. Otherwise it's kinda contradictory.
He's right about them being "entertainment platforms". But at the same time they are in competition.
Right, which is why the machines are called the PlayStations...
sigh...
seems like anytime sony starts gaining some steam their execs have a tendency to say something pretty stupid.
It's a well-known fact that the PS3's main competition is the Foreman grill.
seems like someone is giving up the ghost.
Maybe this is why we don't have home, they got to make sure it does everything first.
Damn it, Kaz. You guys were on a roll this week, and now as soon as the weekend rolls around, this.
I mean, I see where he's coming from, making the point that Sony is competing more with entertainment in general with the Playstation brand...but the wording was just terrible.
Which is really the PS guys' failing, their points are often valid and true, but they word them so stupidly it's painful.
This is so annoying.
Nintendo isn't competing with 360 or Ps3, they're going after non gamers.
Microsoft doesn't feel like they're competing with Wii, they're setting their sights on Sony exclusively.
Sony doesn't think they're competing with anyone.
Dear Delusional Console Makers:
You all make consoles and are competing with all of each other.
funny pic of him with the "number 3" showing with his fingers. you saying they in 3rd place Luke? lol.
Oh and btw, anyone else expect the quote to bring up that the PS3 is really a computer? They used to say that and I always thought it was silly.
@Saint Anima: That's my take on it as well.
"any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers' attention"
Such as, say, other consoles?
What a stupid-ass remark.
So I guess Pepsi isn't in competition with Coke, right?
Don't make stupid statements. Please.
Sounds like Sony is even stealing from Nintendo's quotes now too.
...that's also Microsoft's competition, so yeah. They are competing.
@resetbutton: BEST COMMENT EVER. Seriously - that is pretty good...lol - and it makes sense too.
@karasu is my homeboy: Actually, Sony sees themselves as competing with everyone. That includes TV networks, movie studios, and anybody else who makes entertainment. It's still a thin statement that backhandedly pooh-poohs their competi-- uh, their peers.
"We're not like those little companies (coughMicrosoftcoughNintendocough) who are so narrow-minded that they're only competing with each other. No, we're so huge, we can compete with everybody!"
@archibaldleech: Genuinely funny.
Luke, you have this amazing ability to take a mundane, uninteresting quote and turn it into a savage, blood-thirsty war cry. Why waste your talents here? There are so many political campaigns that could use a guy like you.
He sounds like Michael Bay when talking about Uwe Boll.
So...seeing how Sony also makes TV, music, and movies, they plan on taking away their own customers?
The title is misleading, hence the "Sony execs are dumb" comments. He didn't say they are not competing with MS or Nintendo, just that they are competing with MORE than JUST them. And he's right. PSP is more than just a gaming device like the DS and PS3 is more than just a gaming machine like the Wii/360.
This is some Sony Defense Force type shit that would spin things around to make the PS3 #1. Number 1 in what? Oh being a media-centric gaming console with blu-ray inside.
Kutaragi said the exact same thing about PS1 and it sounded fresh then. I'd say the Wii was doing better at it right now.
You know, his statement really reeks of damage control. They've been so good at sounding like they're on the rebound, and he had to go and spoil it by sounding like they're desperately fighting for legitimacy.
It's not as bad a f*ck up as people are making it to be.
@Saint Anima: Agreed
Key word missing is "only"
"our competition is not only Microsoft or Nintendo"
WOW...............!
And just today on the SONY Days event the whole theme was that the PS3 was a videogame system above all things first..I am so sick of the bullshit the SONY spits out.If the company it's self doesn't know how to sell the PS3 then how can a new consumer the PS3 as the ultimate in Videogame consoles or the ultimate in BluRay movie playback because it can't be both and as you see for your selves the PS3 is FARrrrr from being the best thing tof videogaming, it actually is the best BluRay player for now untill the competition takes that away from the PS3's sales as more BluRay units become cheaper and come with updatable firmware thru built in ethernet ports.
@Doomstalk: It has nothing to do with it. The thing is, Kaz is smart enough to not go berserk like Greenberg did when he heard "PS3" in the question. Most Sony execs acknowledged the success of the Wii a long time ago and they all predicted that they'd catch up with the 360 pretty fast, and it's happening faster than they even thought. This is not damage control, just class. And nothing from what he said is untrue.
@Ariance:
Ah good point. Yeah I'll agree that this was framed badly here. Sony never said they're not competing with Nintendo or Microsoft, they said it's not just them...
@JorgieX: Dude, seriously, do you have to come for EVERY article about the PS3 to troll? You don't miss one of them. You didn't even read the article did you? Nothing you said had anything to do with what Kaz said.
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
bah, I read the inclusion of "only" in Ariance's post and thought Kaz said that. He did say they aren't competing with the two, even if that's not what he intended.
My bad
@slomo788: Looking at a quote in context is so immature. You are a logic fanboy.
@LittleBigPlaneteer
Ariance's post is right. Otherwise he would dismiss the Wii and the 360 as entertainment boxes and it wouldn't make any sense.
@Does Not Equal: But isn't the whole thing supposed to be about gaming. I miss the NES and the Sega Master system. Since back then we all used the VHS player for movies and left the videogames to the simple to use consoles...like put the game in and power then play...? That's it now SONY wants to take on the entire entertainment industry video players, music players, computers, videogame consoles, even trying to cure diseases...LMFAO.....!
There just setting themselves up to fail.....BIG TIME
Competing with all entertainment? Think you're biting off a little more than you can chew, Sony?
Focus on getting the GAME part of the PS3 down, then go for everything else. Priorities!
@slomo788:I agree with you on this 100%. I can't find anything he said as inflammatory, or dismissing the other consoles. It's just a wider competition.
@JorgieX:So you are dissing them for integrating more forms of entertainment into gaming? So I guess you ALSO hate the 360 since they are doing the EXACT same thing except the BD, right? The day you come up with a legit excuse to bash the PS3 I'll take you seriously but now, you're just confirming your clown status
@Spoffoth: Thank you, I knew Sony had said this before, and I came into the comments for someone to verify that.
@slomo788: Interesting. The tag didn't bleed.
@homernoy: *wider competition he is refering to. Not lack of it with the 360 and Wii.
@slomo788: Dude relax I really do want to love "MY" PS3 but with all this crap I can't reach it...lol
Sorry if it seems like I'm trolling but you must not see my other posts. But not to flame this war any further I like my PS3 for movies and the cool features that are unique to the PS3 and there are some cool ones that other systems don't have, But it is hard to love a system that only promises so much and delivers so little. I just want a great software collection and a great online infrastructure. That's all anyone feel the same for there hardly used PS3?
Now let me go back under the bridge and wait for SONY to cross my path.
@slomo788: Yes I do feel the same way towards the 360 just give the games not the not the movies and the MSN messanger and the dead HD-DVD units and any other non gaming related function.
@ShirtGuyDom: But they've been doing this since the PS2! Actually since the PS1? The technology in their gaming consoles (and handheld) always allowed for other stuff: PS1 had music, PS2 had music AND movies and PS3/PSP just has more than that (internet, communication, music, video, photos, etc). Why is everyone so disgusted just now that Kaz says it?
@JorgieX: But how is it a BAD thing that you can do all that? It's not like the engineers that build the consoles are also game makers. They integrated the tech since the beginning, so it's not a loss of resources. Since when did gamers want the minimum? If it bothers you so much you should buy a Wii, it won't even allow you to watch movies although it's using DVDs, so you can have the pleasure of shelling out for a movie player and have a disaster in your living room. Even the firmware guys have nothing to do with games so what are you complaining about exactly? TOO MUCH value in our consoles?
I think the more a PS3 can do the better. It makes it a better value and more appealing to the masses. As long as games aren't jeopardized for the sake of being a total home entertainment package.
@mva5580: No, it's not the statement that's stupid. It's not even the person who made the statement. It's the person who spun the statement into a viciously inflammatory and dismissive remark who is stupid.
If you can figure out who that person is, you'll find your stupidness.
I don't understand how the majority of fanboys missed "so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo". Sure he goes on to mention the competition is all entertainment...Either way it was HORRIBLE wording. Regardless of what Kaz meant.
Just more PR speak. Why do we insist on the meaningless interpretations?
