I'm not entirely sold on Street Fighter IV yet, and I'm incredibly wary of the upcoming GI Joe movie, so it's nice to be able to take both franchises and go back in time to a simpler, happier time. Like these commercials for the short-lived line of Street Fighter II GI Joe figures, featuring some of the original title's more memorable heroes and all four of its bad guys. Capcom's blog call it a "study in fail", but really, we're going to butt heads on this. "What's a Dhalsim?" Genius. This weekend's goal is to use that as many times as possible. "Sir, today's specials are-" "WHAT'S A DHALSIM?"

"That's a lot of stuff"
pre order day 1
omg, is zangief's had on a crack whore tranny's body?
"Some with real ninja moves!"
"They look unbeatable!"
"NOT!"
And since when was "championship edition" equivalent to "player two colors?"
That said, I'd still love to have one of the Blanka figures. It'd fit right in with the rest of the nerdy stuff on my desk.
i actually had everyone of these toys as a child. And yes, I had them beat ths sh*t out of my brother's GI joes
Yeah those were horrible. I was an avid GI Joe junky when I was a kid and I really, REALLY didn't want anything to do with those.
sadly, I staged real wars with firecrackers and m80s, so I have no more. Man, those were the days
"What's tougher than a Capcom Street Fighter?"
"A Street Fighters mother?"
"NO!"
Man, I miss the good ol' days. Advertising back then was so cheesy it was too good to be true. Like those penny car racers, the G.I. Joe with a parachute, and the little cars you crash together that had differenment monsters on them, can't remember their name. I was so sold on those. Out of the Street Fighter toys I think I only had Guile or Ryu.
Yes, the words "championship edition" are code for "shitty colors everyone hated"
The Street Fighter movie looks better and better. The thing I liked best about those action figure commercials was always the hands pushing the cars. It looked so stupid. No wonder I wasn't a huge action figure fan as a kid.
I still have my Guile figure and Sonic Boom Tank.
I petition that we get those vehicles in SFIV! They could be the specials.
"raiyuu"... gross.
@moutski: Go to the blog linked at the bottom of the article. Send them a picture of you holding the tank and you'll get a free t-shirt.
And really, who doesn't love free t-shirts?
I HAD EM ALL!!! MWAHAHA, even the Shadaloo HQ playset!
they were as small as gi joe figure, you can slightly see g.i. joe logo.
@amost: hah, that's how i said it for like 10 years till i was corrected. just as bad as "ninja gay-den".
A street fighter's mother?
OH NO HE DI-ENT
These toys were actually pretty good back in the day. Even tho they all came with the same weapons (my Guile came with vegas claws ffs).
@spiderweb1986: I think Championship Edition was the first version that allowed players to both choose the same character, without using a code.
Is it even possible to make Guile look more like a dope than this commercial managed to?
They need to give Blanka an electric bitch slap in SF4...
@spiderweb1986: Just be glad they weren't "Turbo Edition" colors.
@Vexorg: It is quite possible, just look at Van Damme in Street Fighter the movie!
Haha, this ad just gets better with age.
LOL that was awesome!
"NO WAY! - WAY!"
So many good one liners.
It's funny cos the people dressed up in this commercial are actually better than those from the movie itself.
I want them!
(1) Why is Blanka blue?
(2) "Rye-oo?" Ugh.
(3) "Dawl-sim?" At least it wasn't the announcer.
(4) That Vega is embarrassingly bad.
(5) Why does Blanka have one of the cheap plastic vehicles with the alliterative name?
(6) Notice we never really get a look at the horrid SFII models? They look like budget cosplayers.
(7) Seriously, "Rye-oo?" It sets my teeth on edge.
@Does Not Equal: didn't they say "rye-oo" in street fighter: the later years as well?
Damn this brings back memories. I have all those but vega, balrog, and dhalsim. And the helicopter...Ah sweet memories of my childhood. These commercials are absurd though, but then again what wasn't in the 90's?
i didn't remember that until i saw it just now.
wanted those things but never got any.
first big case of nostalgia i've gotten from kotaku.
=D
to the mispronunciation hatred: this is years later so maybe try and be subjective.
the first game was something like 1992, so i was very young when this aired.
when i was 10-12 "Ryu" was definitely to be pronounced just like they say in the ad.
considering how that's the target demographic, they nailed it by saying it like that.
it wasn't until many years later that i heard someone correct anyone,
and there are surely still people who are far from ignorant who say it that way.
Lol that was great :D
Wow.
Oh yeah, memory lane time. I had every last one of those as a kid except for E. Honda. Who the hell wants a fat G.I. Joe?
It's almost as cheesy as the US made Street Fighter cartoon.
I still have Zangief and M. Bison lying around my parents house somewhere.
"correct dem all!"
lol
also, "street-slamming missiles".
lol
I'm naming my next RB band name that.
I dont know which is worse
"A Street Fighter's Mother"
or
"What's a Dhalsim? OH!"
Did capcom even have mcuh to do with these toys? They pronounce a few fighter's names wrong.. dissapointing..
lolololol "Zan-gee-f" lolol
I remember being in Toys R Us looking for these....and when I stumbled across them I came to the terrible cross roads of a decision. Ether get the Street Fighter figures or the Ronin Warrior figures. I went Ronin...and sort of regret it. I mean spring loaded action figures are LAME.
This is so awesome in so many ways I lost count.
Thanks a lot.
After seeing this I'm now determined to find my turquoise M. Bison that is buried in my closet.
And yes, I was the only kid on the block with the turquoise M. Bison and not the original one. Not because they didn't have the original one, no, because I actually like my Bisons wearing turquoise.
You know 'em, you love 'em!
So correct 'em!
...the 90's were awesome.
@Nisori: Ronin Warriors figures were awesome, man! However, you were probably picking up the bargain SFII figures because I'm pretty sure that Ronin Warriors came out a few years later.
As for everyone complaining about how things are pronounced, you have no right if you still say "ha-DUE-ken".
@Vexorg: That's Duke, Guile is in the background. I guess they needed some way to tie it in to GI Joe, so having Duke look like he just 'doesn't get these kids and their street-fighting' was some ad exec's way of making it seem even cooler.
That is the most EPIC commercial of all times:)
I had some of those. they looked NOTHING like the actual characters (as you can see in the video).
Did anyone else notice how they got Ken's last name wrong?
There's no way that M. Bison would ever work with Cobra. Those bumbling nincompoops can barely manage to shoot a target, let alone successfully incorporate Shadaloo into their organization.
@Does Not Equal: R-Y-U. Rye-oo
Oh Guile, you jokester.
As a kid I bought a lot junk, but even then I knew these action figures were horrible.
WOW fantastic! I love the awesomely badness of these commercials.
