Motorstorm? Loved it. Probably loved it more than you did, as I played through the entire thing, sticking up for it during the public picking apart of it's graphical promise. "It doesn't look like that E3 2005 footage!" they said. "La la la! I can't hear you! Vrrooom!!" I said. Motorstorm 2? I'm concerned. I keep looking at that ever present "pre-alpha 40% complete" reminder, but, man, does that water look less interactive than I'd hoped—even though the cooling properties are nifty. Still, monster trucks! And that lens flare? Just like the real thing. Whaddya think?

Comments
Split screen racing was pretty much my biggest issue with Motorstorm... If they take care of that, and put out a decent game, I'll definitely be interested.
"After listening to the community, we added split screen playing for up to 4 players."
Guys, sorry, but that's not something you should have to get feedback on. There is no excuse for not having some type of multiplayer on a single system. None.
"water also cools down the engine"
What's up Excite Truck?
@Stratovarius:
What? Motorstorm had multiplayer dude...
I definitely like how they're thinking of the environment and the effect it has on various vehicles. I liked the demo of Motorstorm, but never bought it. I'm pretty much sold on Motorstorm 2 at this point though.
@McWhertor: I agree with you on the water. Looks like its not being affected at all and just splash effect added off the tires.
Also, don't know about you guys, but this game is looking amazing and this is just the pre-alpha. I'm liking the physics of the environment, etc...
Sir, You Lie!! Surely that can't be Motorstorm 2. The trailers looked wowtastic!! This is terriblastic ... :-(
Might as well skip this one then..
LBP Here I come.. [wait rather].
I think it looked decent for pre-alpha. I'll just have to see what kind of other racers are on the market before I commit
For a pre alpha its looking mighty pretty.The first was really fun,and im glad theyv added split screen to this one.
@Stratovarius: clearly you do not know what you are talking about Motorstorm had online multiplayer and according to your comment any type of multiplayer.
You're not alone McWhertor.
I too loved the hell out of the game, and I stood by it as well. The gameplay completely made up for any features the game didn't have. It just felt right. The tracks were just as good too.
Hell I might even say it's the best off-road racing game so far.
overall it has some really nice moments,but yeah,the water needs quite some work.
I also hope one can actually crush the smaller vehicles with a monster truck like they showd in that short prerendered sequence, cause in the ingame moments the monster truck could drive onto and over the smaller vehicles but seemed to not affect em much as if he had no weight.
@talk2sk:
Were you really expected the game to look like a pre-rendered trailer? Wow...
I don't see how this looks terrible...Obviously it isn't fully polished yet (still 60% left to do), but races are looking mighty fine.
The water does need some work. It looks pretty, but the cars just don't seem to interact well with it as Mcwhertor says.
i re-e-e-e-eally hope they're being sincere about the 40% complete thing.. the game looks horrible! i've seen better water effects on my N64..
I can have this kind of driving fun in gta4
I can see 2 player split but 4 player split i have a 50" and even then the 4 screens will be to small and dizzying to me. But it an option non the less. I'm not gonna pick on the game since i hate racers anyways but there is nothing in this game that can't be done on the other console...you know which one I mean. lmao
Make the plants SMALLER, please. They are ruining the scale. Some of those plants make it look like an RC racer.
I'm excited for this one. I don't care what anybody says, Motorstorm was really, really fun.
@Fryfat: haha totally. I really liked that mechanic, actually.
The water will look better. It has to. I mean, think about how good these guys made mud look.
so I guess Motorstorm has become the PS3's ATV Off-road Fury. they should make one for PS3 cause it was really fun on PS2.
@henri1kk:
Are you familiar with the stages? Theres pre-alpha (which this is in), alpha, beta, and gold
fro pre alpha this is pretty damn good, alpha is where all the other effects get inserted with beta testing for bigs and whatnot. This is merely a placeholder for them to build upon in the alpha stage to add in all the bells and whistles.
I do want to play this... I will pretend it's an updated Jet Moto.
The vehicles seem bit light, looking at the collisions. Could use more oomph.
And mud. Needs more mud.
Stop saying the water needs work...the water needs work...40% complete alpha. Of course things wont be working they way they would when the game's complete. But yea, that looks pretty good.
I really liked the first game too... but that music! Argh! That's why I haven't played more of it. Frustrating. I'd be willing to fork over more money for a custom soundtrack patch than I would for more courses.
@Sparx: i was only joking! i said that i hoped this was really pre-alpha as other game developers claim their games are in pre-alpha stage and when they're finally released not much has changed! i hope it's not the case with MS2!
So, target render: Motorstorm gets bashed. Realistic but still VERY impressive pre-alpha stage, its successor gets bashed. Not even a consideration for the fact that it was one of the BEST and most innovative/fun racer of this generation and that the sequel promises the best feature for a racing game ever... *Sighs*.
Wow, I wish this wasn't ps3 exclusive. I reckon the water probably isn't finished yet, seeing as those are the sort of effects the wii can push about and it is only 40% done.
@henri1kk:
Oh, my bad dude, guess I misread your comment. No disrespect meant on my part.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: @PogiJet:
He's saying multiplayer on ONE system. Meaning there's no sort of splitscreen.
I love how they put 40% done. Just in case people complain about the game, they throw a random % done number on it.
@scottyman218: Right, because YOU are developing it and YOU know what the real percentage it.
I was completely taken by surprise by Motorstorm and absolutely loved it. Definitely the most fun I've had in a racing game in a long time.
Looks so tasty, even at this stage. As a portable-only gamer, I'm hungrily envious of this!
SEGA Ralley Revo on PSP does its job in this regard...but I wouldn't say no to a sprawling crash-tastic racer like this.
@slomo788: he may not know but the percentage they put in there is not really accurate! they can decide, in the middle of the developing cycle, that they want to put in another multiplayer mode, or that they want to add X more tracks and, if they do so, this percentage becomes meaningless.. so.. scottyman218's kinda right..
@slomo788: It doesn't look realistic[RROD]! It looks ok[RROD]. I'm sure they're going to add more polish to it and throw in the blur to confuse the eyes as[RROD] they so love to do but this here is the essence of the game [RROD] and it looks like it will be a better game then the original[RROD].
...also RROD!
Now just take yourself off the the Top 3 Loading... game of all time and I will take another gander.
I love how they have the 40% done on it... that could mean anything, like 2 of 6 modes are done.
or 3 of 8 maps are done
they should've just said, "incomplete" instead of giving us some percentage to create hype about how the game might look.
@henri1kk:The percentage is still a better estimate that anyone else can give us. I think it's kinda unfair that everyone jumps at them for every move they make, especially since their game was actually amazing.
@okenny :): ROFL. Well it sure is more realistic than the target render that's for sure.
Oh boy! Interactive vegetation technology!
Its official. I need a PS3 for 3 games this year. MGS4, Resistance 2, and Motorstorm 2.
@eunoia: Even with the first one's level of graphics it will still be a gorgeous looking game.
Split screen? Thank god.
@McWhertor: I also loved the first MotorStorm. Finished the main game, and much of the add-on content.
However, I'm concerned about their comments on making the AI tougher. I thought the AI was a total PITA in the first game. It was more focused on crashing you than on actually winning a race. That and the fact that it seemed to have almost endless boost totally pissed me off. There were a number of times when I nearly threw my controller out the window on the last few races.
As for the video? Wish I could view it. Gamevideos totally sucks. Their videos and home page never load at work or at home. Speaking of which; any other Aussies have that issue?
@slomo788: Nobody's jumping at them for every move they make, I just pointed out how humorous I found it.
Percentage doesn't matter because:
A) It's vague on WHAT's done. 40% done pre-alpha? 40% done the entire game? 40% done that track?
B) Percentage is no indicator of time. Imagine if a game came out and said 80% done! What does that mean? 2 months? 6 months? 2 years? If they've been working on a game 4 years, we could do math and assume they mean it will take them a total of 5 years to complete, so 1 more year to go!
I was never claiming I knew the %, so quit attacking me.
@Doshu: I second that. I don't think the AI needs to get anymore "brutal." After a certain point the game was borderline frustrating because of the AI.
a) The game is 40% done, and is in PRE-ALPHA .
b) The best we can do is estimate. However, you are correct. Unless you're working on Motorstorm 2, you don't know what changes/additions/deletions those other 60% are going to entail.
@slomo788:
I don't disagree, it looks stunning already even in that stage, I'm just saying that having that number there is dubious. Not only that, the interpretation is up for grabs.
40% complete of the pre-alpha stage?
40% complete in the pre-alpha stage?
and it doesn't say what part is complete.
the graphics could be 90% complete but only 20% of the tracks are done, 40% of the physics and gameply, 20% of the cars are modelled and 30% of the modes
And, not only does it pre-maturely start the hype train (which is leading to much tougher reviews on games, and much worse sales... hype doesn't sell, look at lair), it leads to more uneccessary and childish flamewars between fanboys.
all in all, a stupid thing to include.
@scottyman218: @eunoia: Ah. I didn't see it that way. I thought he was saying that they were lying or something. But from that angle, it is... pointless. Sorry scottyman ;).
Still want that cockpit view. Don't know how usefull it would be but damn would it be awesome to see.
I thought the game was good but I hated the amount of levels (needed more) and the fact that once you have found a good route through a track, you're almost never inclined to veer from that route and use a different route. Essentially killing the fact that there are multiple routes through each level. If they do something about those problems, I will surely buy motorstorm 2
As for the graphics: considering this game can do 4 player split screen and the game is less than half done, the graphics are pretty good.
[tiny cough]EXCITE TRUCK, BITCHES!![splutter]
@jitty9: They had something going with having to use a seperate path for each vehical type but I agree there's not enough finess in the game for me.
this game looks terrible, especially for a racing game?....PGR4 looks better, GRID demo looks better, and GTA anyting looks beter then this off road racer...its kinda embrassing, honest, and yes, i did play Motorstorm on PS3...OH...and to further extendm y point, are you serious? bigger BRANCHES? to stop a 2 ton car? great excuse for improvement
Text wall, hide the children:
The mention of a 40% complete alpha figure is likely a guesstimate. They're likely working on levels, bugfixes, gameplay balancing and interaction tweaking, as well as interface and asset tweaking. So, they've got some slack, but typically the engine and "look and feel" of a game does not change much from alpha to beta. It just gets a bit more polish and packaging.
Lens flare was kind of retro, not sure if that's what they were going for. With HDR/bloom effects and soft lighting you can achieve more realistic light glare for when you're staring into a sunrise/set, but maybe it's a placeholder.
Water interaction needs tweaking, this goes without saying. Although I'll say it anyway. The water apparently exists in a dimension parallel to our own, and is not directly influenced by the vehicles driving through and into it. Vehicles have buoyancy, but don't seem to actually displace any volume of water. It's as if the surface of the water is given a gravity value, and the vehicle simply bounces back up to meet it. I also like how the water just clips through the vehicle, instantly filling the interior with still, calm waters. Like a water laser. Of death. The water spray kickback sprites are a nice touch, but giving them a particle behavior would go miles towards the feel of the game. Make the mud and water kick up and spray, and let it hit trailing vehicles. If water hits a muddy windshield/body panel, it should clean it off a bit. If mud hits a dry windshield/body panel, it should stick. And such.
The vegetation is a bit weird. They're trying to portray a kind of tropical island but it seems pretty thin on the green stuff. There should be grass all over the place, not just a few strategically placed "tough weeds" to ruin your day. The plants also seem unnaturally strong. A lot of plants are hollow inside, storing water. They should get demolished in a cloud of cellulose by a vehicle going any faster than walking speed. This obviously does not apply to trees, which are far more elastic or dense depending on the type. Hitting a decent sized sapling will indeed ramp your (lightweight) vehicle up and likely roll it. Heavier vehicles won't have this problem.
On that note, vehicle mass seems very unnatural. Just going by the way the vehicles react and move in the video, it seems like they should weigh twice as much as they appear to, at least. A decent sized baja truck is not going to go bouncing around off of weeds or be able to take corners at 90MPH, and a monster truck should most certainly demolish a rally racer should it be introduced from behind, and not simply drive up and bounce off of it. Hell, monster truck tires often weigh over a half of a ton each. Total vehicle weight ranges from 10 to 20,000 pounds for most. If a monster truck managed to catch up to a sand buggy (in itself kind of a fantasy, since they almost all cap out at like 80MPH) the only thing left sticking out of the ground should be an engine block and maybe a piece of roll cage.
That said, this isn't Pro Formula Tropical Island Racer Series, so they've got their arcade gameplay license. I think that if they put some more polish on the environment interactions and give us levels that are scenic, creative and don't contain controller crushing cheap punches, this could be a ton of fun.
There's a reason why people still cite WaveRace64 for its wave "feel" - it did it superbly. Add touches of the superlative here and there and you'll get people to not only notice your game, but remember it for years to come.
Dang, that's a lot of text.

We might have to do an IQ filter to stop posts like yours......
@JorgieX: you mean the wii?
:D
Loved Motorstorm, and will love Motorstorm 2, methinks.
