Justin Marks, writer of the Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li film, is aware that most gamers have wanted to wed Chun-Li (and possibly worse) since we were yay high, but it looks like we can expect a dignified treatment of the leading lady, played by Smallville actress Kristin Kreuk.
But... but what about the infamous anime shower scene?
No, this is actually a good moment to mention something about Chun-Li's depiction in the movie. Basically there are two factors at work. First, I've never seen a successful action movie (in my mind) that blatantly sexualized its female lead and succeeded for its audience. Catwoman, Elektra, the list goes on and on, and I just get a lot of eye-rolling. Then I think back to The Terminator, or possibly my all-time favorite movie, Aliens, and I think of how Ripley is depicted in that film. She's a tough woman, but not because she came from a place of wearing tight pants and beating up men. She's tough because she had this core emotional story about a life that could have been and never was. To me, that's the way you write a woman in these kinds of movies.
The interviewer actually appears to have enjoyed the Dead or Alive film, classily stating, "I heard that movie was so good every girl that saw that film on the big screen left the cinema pregnant."
But Marks actually has higher expectations for the Street Fighter flick:
Ah yes. Dead or Alive. Another reason why these game adaptations are so beloved...Hopefully Street Fighter sets a new standard. I certainly believe it will. It's a game adaptation that takes itself seriously, because the material actually deserves to be taken seriously for those of us who were paying attention to the story and the anime series. Of course, there are those out there who just believe Street Fighter is lots of kicking and Hadoukens, and they'll be pleased too because there's plenty of fight sequences. And the fight scenes don't disappoint. I was lucky enough to see a few of them when I was out there a few weeks ago, and Dion Lam, the fight choreographer, has come up with some incredible stuff akin to his work in the Matrix movies.
Perhaps the key to making a decent film adaptation of a video game is developing an understanding of what the material means to its audience - Chun-Li fandom is adoring, not exploitive. At least, that's what I like to think!

"Street Fighter Film Writer Won't "Blatantly Sexualize" Chun-Li"
...and I will not be seeing the Street Fighter Film.
So...the movie will coincide with the new Street Fighter game and Chun Li will be a transvestite with mammoth hands?
Good. Finally, a director that respects and understands the source material.
@karasu is my homeboy: And why not? It's not like he was talking about making her look like a dude either.
"I heard that movie was so good every girl that saw that film on the big screen left the cinema pregnant."
Huh? I don't think they're watching the movie if that's the case...
Oh, come on, they casted Kristen Kreuk to play as Chun Li. I think you have all the sex you could ever want right there.
I still believe this movie will suck. As a very strong SF fan; the very fact they are not focusing on the two main characters Ryu and Ken are infuriating.
So this movie will remain crap until they can so me something so incredible they can prove me wrong. I doubt I will see that anytime soon.
That's dumb. He's just cut his young male audience in half. So that's about... half of his total audience.
@Kanik: Thunder thighs you mean!
Anyways... Chunli shower scenes and Mai Shiranui costume changes were pretty much the best things EVER back in the days of VHS.
I'd rather watch a Fatal Fury movie than Street fight though. Probably because Terry Bogard is the baddest man alive, in digital form, I mean with a hat. Fuck you, you know what I mean.
@karasu is my homeboy: QFT... seriously, wtf :<
I'll believe it when I see it.
I really cant take the writers words seriously. The director and producers will have their way by turning kristen into one hot piece of ass.
whatever does he mean?

"wanted to wed Chun-Li (and possibly worse) since we were yay high"???
ugh...
awesome writing leigh!!!!
jesus...
@Derigor: ARE YOU OK?
i'm going to see it no matter what, but to me this sounds like another move by the movie industry to destroy what could have been great....
This movie will fail like all the rest of the adaptations out there. There will always be a fine line between video games and films.
I DEMAND CHUN LI JUBBLIES!
Nooooooooo!!!!!
I was so disappointed when SFII The Animated Movie that was included on Street Fighter II The Anniversary Edition (PS2) was missing the shower scene.
@Figcoinc: I think its a good idea to take the focus off characters that have had many movies and series made about them and their story.
It might actually get more people to see it.
That and I think everyone's underestimating how many girls grew up with SF also, and thought ChunLi was the most awesome female character in a game they had seen yet and memorized every single one of her moves and slaughtered many opponents with their mastery of her character... >.> <.<
Maybe that was just me.
@Ricksterlau: I still think the original Mortal Kombat was well made...I mean, as well as a Mortal Kombat movie can be made.
@TP/\C SHKR: I'm not sure I see anything wrong there. Except for your comment.
You're not a Kommenter, you're a Kocksucker.
Kristin Kreuk is a good actress and would portray her well. (Im not saying this because she's hot)
I think he meant:
"Dion Lam, the additional fight choreographer, has come up with some incredible additional stuff akin to his additional work in the additional Matrix movies
[www.imdb.com]
What are you talking about,. chunli is a man, haven't you seen the recent darwings....Now Kristin Kreuk....she should be sexualized :)
@Kanik: I agree. Mortal Kombat was a pretty slick action movie back when it came out.
@TP/\C SHKR: Grow the fuck up.
@Itchy (PSN: Kaizoku-ou): K?...
@Atheist Jew: just asking for alil quality control bud...what are you in the biz?
Kristin Kreuk doesn't have the body for Chun-Li. Also Kreuk doesn't want to be sexualized, meaning that she was a bad actress to pick from the beginning. With no shower scene, I think this movie is a fucking load.
Heck, they even say they are planning on sequels. What the hell happened to making a movie without a sequel being planned and then the movie doing well enough to warrant a sequel. Just like Jumper, they already were planning more than one sequel for it, and look how that piece of shit movie turned out.
@hollowfreak: I would LOVE to see Kristen done up like that! :)
@TP/\C SHKR: "just asking for alil quality control bud"
looks like you need a little quality control yourself there buddy.
I was really hoping to see kristen kreuk blatantly sexualized... damn.
Wow, all this stuff about the Street Fighter Movie looks good, maybe this would actually be good...Master_Achilles:
@
Well, i don´t think the source material is getting a lot of respect, since Chun Li is a canadian actress instead of a lot of Chinese actresses who would´ve been better choices like Zhang Ziyi, who can act and also throw some good moves; But anyway, i hope everything else is not so distant from the game story...
So, in the first Alien movie, at the end when Ripley takes off her uniform and is in her white undies... Thats not sexualizing her? I was just wondering because I was certainly aroused somewhat by the scene when I first saw the movie (as a young lad) and many parodies exist such as Mad Magazine and SNL which make fun of how exploitative that particular part was. Sigourney was the SNL host and re-did that scene personally in the show. I mean, she really had no real reason to take off her clothes. I know what the guy is saying about those characters being strong and stuff, but bad example unless you want to forget about that scene. A better example would be Marion in the first Indy movie or Lois Lane in the Chris Reeve Superman movies although they are hardly fap-fodder actresses are they? Tomb Raider was popular as heck and Angelina was sure shown in that black bikini a lot. Although a soapy breasted shower scene certainly wouldnt have hurt box in my opinion. Look at Beowulf, shes pretty much nekkid in that. (I realize she isnt the main character of that movie however.) The most important aspect is whether there is a good script. If it isnt you can add naked chicks who cant act but who are popular to boost the movies sales. Like Barb Wire with Pam Anderson, that movie sucked, but did well financially because of them sexualizing Pam. Tank Girl which was better written and had a stronger lead female who wasnt shown naked in the flick did poorly. Kristen Kreuk is a born again Christian so she would be against a lot of sexy scenes being in the script. I doubt that this movie will contain less suck than either Catwoman or Elektra.
I'm glad she won't be sexualized for fan service, but I'm still waiting for a comment about the gross misinterpretation of the size of her thighs.
@TP/\C SHKR: How could you possibly be so hypocritical? Every one of your posts on this thread contain at least one unnecessary ellipsis, not to mention the dreaded Internet speak.
Now I do not see the huge error you speak of, but the next time you criticize a blogger, make sure you cover your ass first.
Good. Part of me really dislikes the way media peddlers think they can bait me with T&A so I'll buy whatever they're selling. When confronted with such over-sexualized entertainment, I tend to take my dollars elsewhere because that's what porn is for...and it's free.
@tsukihimeblood: Bah bored at work. But come on, a live action fatal fury, with Geese Howard and some Terry Bogard action? You know that'd rock.
I'll see street fighter though, hell I have the mortal kombat movies on dvd, just something about those movies make them fun to watch in that Campy sorta way.
A lot of people rag on the DoA movie for being bad, but they don't see that it's so bad it's awesome. DoA was a great movie for what it was.
@GOLD5: Actually, she was going to enter hibernation and strictly speaking to be in statis, you can't wear anything (at least in Ridley Scott's explaination on the commentary track.)
Fox didn't want the crew of the Nostromo coming out of the chambers naked (remember, they did that at the start of the film too) and Scott had to settle with underwear.
So, canonically, there is a reason. After that, well... I reserve judgment.
You mean, I won't get to see Kristin Kreuk naked? Dammit!
Really though, she looks as good as gold, I can't imagine her getting her kit off for the camera.
Well, of course I can IMAGINE it, but it's a bit of a leap of faith. Maybe after she's turned to drugs and started hanging out with Paris and Lindsay...
@GOLD5: Angelina Jolie didn't actually get her kit off for Beowulf, but I get what you mean...
Kristin Kreuk if freaking hot. Just unbelievably hot.
@Silent Predator: god bless movies that are so bad they are good. Wonder if DoA is available on blu ray, or is ita straight to divx rip :D
Eric Roberts, the goto guy for cheesy scifi original movie (quality) villainy.
Ok, so you go out and get Kristin Kreuk for your movie but refuse to "sexualize" her character. That's like buying a Ferrari and refusing to drive over 50!
In the anime Chun-Li was not objectified or "blatantly sexualized" it was a fifteen second sexualy based scene but that was it. Ever watch Ninja Scroll? and i'm not even an anime nerd...
"It's a game adaptation that takes itself seriously"
I'm suddenly worried about this Street Fighter movie guys.
I don't care really, I'll just watch the movie and hope it has good action. Chun li is okay but the odd panty shot doesn't interest me as much since we've already seen the shower scene on the anime. May aswell get down to some real action this time since I hope this makes it not as duff as the old movie.
I own the anime movie which is actually not half bad. I dont know about this new movie though. Kinda seems too hollywood to be a good video game movie.
The pic above is probably the best rendition of Chun Li ever. She was tough, cute, and had meat in all the right places.
This upcoming movie is an abomination.
I must say that DOA was bad...so bad it was good in a way. I mean they got some good scene and couple of hot chicks...but I would not buy it. Just maybe download it. Mostly it was bad.
this thread looks and sounds like a bunch of horny teenagers angry about not getting to see boobs. I'm very sad from this.
+ Watch video
Lets hope it's dark and violent. This 'taking itself seriously' stuff sounds cool to me, I want to see the street fighter characters get in some real bloody, knuckle smashing fights. Why not anyway, we've already lost the boobs.
@GOLD5: While Marion and Louis Lane are romantic leads, they are objects by virtue of the fact that they are built to be so. The story _needs_ them to be objects. Why they work is that they are never really sexually objectified. They are both attractive and yeah, as kids we might've found the scene with Marion in a dress as kind of hot, but that's not "shower scene" objectified by any stretch.
Ripley is an interesting point. I think part of the point there was her still being sexual. A woman in all possible ways. Thats something the whole trilogy plays with, though not all that well. That said, I never found that scene exciting in any way as I was already way too vested in her as tough and almost un-womanly. For me, that scene probably _didn't_ work like it was meant to. I don't think I bought her as a woman until Resurrection.
@TP/\C SHKR: I'm confused. What's wrong with what Leigh wrote?
I always thought the biggest problem with movies like Electra, or Bard-Wire is that they pick girls for T&A appeal instead of the ability to do action scenes. It just looks really stupid when the enemy is waiting around for the heroine to deliver a punch, because she's so slow. Or he has to make hugely over-exaggerated movements because she's obviously not hitting with any force. That was the biggest problem with the movies he lists as bad.
Furthermore, this mistake has already been made on this movie. It's not like there aren't a good number of female Chinese action stars.
if I were him, I'd concentrate more on making sure it didn't suck...
@TP/\C SHKR: what's that i sense...ban hammer maybe?
Even Capcom's probably thinking right now, 'Why not?'
Seriously, I'd love to hear Capcom's take on this new movie, or even Udon Comic's take on what these guys are talking about.
Well, the twelve year olds would get a kick out of seeing a titty flick that just focuses on camera pans of Kreuks naughty bits, but the rest of us would be wondering why we wasted our money on faux porn.
Seriously, people can't run around and whine about wanting a serious film adaptation, but in the same breath complain that a character - whom was never really exploited sexually in the games - to be seen as simple eye-candy, while still expecting her to be taken as a tough, ass-kicking Interpol agent. I've got no problem with fan-service, but as long as it isn't overt and detracting from the image your trying to establish for your character and story. I've seen far too many films that try to give a female protagonist the same depth and respect as a male protagonist, but inevitably has her become fodder for nocturnal emissions.
Pick and choose your battles people, this isn't a bad thing. Hell, if anything, could it mean that a writer is *gasp* actually trying to add characterization without using the T&A card to garner attention for a change? I can't say what this means for the overall quality of the film, but at least it's a good start.
