one of my friends used to own two horses, got them both for $3000 they were about 3-5 years old each.

This is not me being snobby I swear but your friend probably rode western or just got a horse that hadn't been trained to jump or barrel. Jumpers and dressage horses are more expensive because training them takes a lot longer.
