Being a gigantic fan of the Japanese RPG and knowing the appetites of said fans, I am half tempted to just toss these new Famitsu scans out onto the site and then head for high ground to avoid the ensuing flood of drool, but I'll be nice.
Cross Edge is a new RPG due out in Japan for the PlayStation 3 this September that is a collaboration between some of the top names in the genre. Nippon Ichi, Gust, Namco Bandai, Idea Factory, and even Capcom have lent their properties to this superstar game, which features characters from Darkstalkers, Disgaea, Ar Tonelico, and many more. Hell, a game with Etna and Morrigan together alone is worth eleventy million dollars. The game features turn-based battles, a plot that involves rescuing souls, and...if you look to the bottom right corner of the scan...the ability to dress your characters up in a wide variety of outfits, from PE clothes to devil costumes.
Chances of this coming out in the states? Pretty damn unlikely. Chances of me importing this? Over nine thousand. Thanks to SupaPhly for the scans!

Really, you don't think it'll come here? I think based on the cult following some of those games have it could. Good god, it better.
I want this game so bad, and I already want to punch Namco in the kidneys since I know they'll have a hand in making DAMN sure this never reaches the state.
Will this be a sequel of sorts to Namco X Capcom?
This game will never come out over here for the same reason we'll never get a non-Original Generation Super Robot Wars game: Licensing Hell.
Still, this looks outright delicious.
My head just exploded.
There is a need for a good RPG for the PS3. Until then, Persona 3 on the PS3.
Etna, Etna, ETNA!!!!
@Amuro1X: Ah, correct. Oh well -- thank you region-free (kinda) gaming! Play Asia here I come!
@ChimDeathmonkey: You mean Persona 5 on PS3?
Hahaha, no way! I always love when companies do these cross-over games.
Capcom better not dick the Breath of Fire crowd like in Namco x Capcom. Why the hell are there no Breath of Fire characters in these games?!
+ Watch video
Wow, that just looks awesome. Now if only they could get us NamcoXCapcom I could believe they would give this to us.
So it's the same kind of fan service that Kingdom Hearts just not Disney and SE characters?
I miss the days when games sold because they were actually good and not because dudes are in love with Cloud, Sephiroth, and other lame rehashed of those two characters.
@KuromanKuro Live and PSN: I think Namco x Campcom had a number of characters from franchises that were never released in the states? I may be wrong.
Still...I want this game!
Holy crap. This sounds freaking amazingly awesome.
OMG.
Imported.
Capcom + Nippon Ichi?
Imported TWICE.
I love that the PS3 is region free.
I was indifferent until I saw that Valkyrie profile looking combat screen.
Wow, I hope this doesnt go the Namco x Capcom route and ignores a Western release, I was so excited for that game(IMO they should make it for PSP and bring it West, or make an English version downloadable via PSN). Anyway, wow, this game is probably going to be huge in Japan. Oh, the fan service! I want this :(
Sweet. The graphics, from what I can hardly tell without my glasses and the small magazine scans look high-end ps2-ish. So maybe a multiple system release?
More Prinnes dood
if it's ps2 HELL yea i would get it :) yay for a modded system
The concept is great but the actual game is probably awful.
what no Lahar? that's not disgaea I know
Won't be coming here, I really doubt NIS USA, Capcom USA, Namco Bandai USA would be able to get on terms about royalties... (especially Namco Bandai USA)
@BjLive45: dooood moar prinnies would be good dood
*prays for an English language option*
Nice it's too bad shit like this will never see the light of day in the US. oh well i guess it's back to playing my Japanese copy of Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS.
[en.wikipedia.org]
Be right back, changing my pants.
Morrigan. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
/drool.
Now where's my PS1 Darkstalkers game... time to bust out some ownage with jon talban or whatever that furry duder's name is with some ps3 brand upscaling.
I really hope that more characters are in the final game.
Because it would be really awesome to have a team of Lloyd from ToS, Dudley from SFIII, and Laharl.
Really cool.
@agies: Who cares? It's Capcom + Nippon Ichi + Namco Bandai + Gust + Idea Factory!
What, no Xbox 360 version announced? I heard the ol' 360 was doing awesome in Japan!
Ar Tonelico? Nippon Ichi? Gust? I really wish that i were more knowledgeable in these jRPGs. Looks like a pretty awesome game idea, but i'm put off by the fact that i don't recognize 90% of the characters and most of the studios/companies.
I'm getting old... :(
When this comes out the PS3 will shift a rediculous abount of units in Japan. Look at what monster hunter did for the PSP.
Chances of this coming out in the states? Pretty damn unlikely.
WHY!!!! WHY!!!!!
This MUST get an official English-language release. Please?
someone translate this plz
o lee shit.
I hope NIS America can pull to get this over here. They seem to be one of the few companies that truly care about hardcore RPG'ers. (see all the limited/special launch editions of games they've done that Mr. Average US gamer has never even heard of.)
Everyone's already said it, but HOLY CRAP. I don't usually import RPGs due to the whole language thing, but I need this game.
Sony, thank you so very much for making PS3 games region free this time around. Yet another game I'll be importing.
yeah! boobs
@GOD: The difference is that its not a handheld. I don't think the ps3 will explode on the Japanese market till there is a PS3 slim, or perhaps a FFXIII bundle.
@kingclip: yeah, I agree...it'll almost certainly come out here.
It'd be sweet if it was a Strat RPG.
@ncsbert: Or Atlus, they bring out alot of hardcore J-RPGS's out here, too.
This has to come to the states... it has to! Or include an english translation or something.
i would so buy this if there was an english translation
If we can get Chaos Wars here, a crossover rpg with FAR more obscure characters, (Growlanser, Shadow Hearts, Gungrave, Spectral Force, etc.) then they can bring this.
(hell I don't care if they make this one a GS exclusive too, just get it here)
Suppose I imported this and until now don't know a lick of Japanese... where might I get started on learning it? Broad question, and slightly off-topic, I know, but well, Kotaku-ites always seem to have the best answers.
Also, /drool
OMG! This game looks awesome! They better bring it over to the States. Even if they don't I think imma import it.
@kingclip: Unfortunately, I don't think it will be released outside of Japan either. Remember NamcoXCapcom? Its a shame though, a damn shame.
HOLY CRAP!
is that a new morrigan sprite?
@twesterms 2nd: I didn't know releasing one or two crossover games was all of a sudden a testament that developers are not relying on actual quality to sell a product, but rather, the names attached to them with the hopes that they'll succeed without the slightest bit of effort. Kingdom Hearts was a successful series that sold millions of copies, yet Namco X Capcom sold like crap in Japan. Not many people buy trash on name alone. Even if you don't like them, the games are good enough to sell on their own merit.
People were reeled in by the characters, but stayed because it was genuinely entertaining. No amount of fan service can save shit in a box. Just look at Dream Mix TV World Fighters, Battle Stadium D.O.N. and Sega Superstars Tennis.
@Topic: This looks nice, but I'm not getting my hopes up for a U.S.A release. Games like these simply aren't considered worthy of the money necessary to license this in the states. I'd love to hear somewhere down the line that Nippon Ichi or Atlus would be distributing this stateside, but thats just wishful thinking.
If the money needed for packaging, marketing, and distribution was a problem, that could easily be solved with making these titles downloadable via X-Box Live or the Playstation network. I wouldn't mind giving up a Gig of hardrive space to play a non-dubbed, english text translated Namco X Capcom, but of course, It's not this simple.
This game at least sounds like an interesting concept, lets just wait and see.
What the hell sort of dream world did I just wake up to?
...Unfortunately, I fear the game wil ljust be an extremely simple turn-based strategy game with occasional visual novel-esque sequences (Sakura Taisen), though the Nippon Ichi involvement could mean the opposite.
I guess I know what i'll be importing when it comes out.
YES
Import here I come!
I saw this last night and it blew my mind.
I really hope Capcom and NISA can play nice for this one.
I have nothing wrong with a very simply SRPG (if it comes down to this). Sadly, this is a case where I would buy it based on fanboy appeal alone.
I can only pray for this one...or at least pray that someone can translate it...
Well now. That's the last straw. With Disgaea 3 and this monstrous beauty being PS3 exclusives I'm heading out to by one.
My wallet weeps.
PLEASE let their at least be English subtitles for this game. I'll import the game regardless, but it would be cool if I knew what it was about.
Wow, it is almost done too. Per the scan the game is 70% complete with a planned release of September.
If R4 era Reiko Nagase shows up I will have no chance to survive, and must make my purchase : )
oh I would love to see this come out to the US. *crosses fingers.*
I'm wondering how badly can they drop the ball, game-play wise.
As cool as it is to have all these people in there, you gotta wonder if the people makin' it have at least some kind of (good) direction. It'd be a shame to just throw all those characters together for the first time and have it play plagued by poor game mechanics.
Really, that's the big question in my head right now.
@Big World: That'll never happen. They've not released any Super Robot Wars game or Jump! Ultimate Stars.
Looks pretty cool though.
