David Reeves Utters Snide Things About Microsoft

It's last year all over again! Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe honcho David "Dirty Nail" Reeves is fueling the console war. Ungh. Here are the sound-bytes:

• Well I think you probably will see it, it's just that a deal obviously was struck between Microsoft and Take 2 to do that, and if that's what they want to do, I think that's the last shot they have.
• All I'm saying is that I think that when we look ahead I think we honestly have a better line-up on PS3 than they probably do on Xbox. They've had two or three Christmases now, I can't remember how many, you know, but I think we've got a really good one coming up. Not just Christmas but in the summer as well.
• It's [GTA IV] obviously the biggest title that PS3 has ever seen. It's spiked sales and we're very happy with the way the bundle has sold and we're very happy with the way that software has gone as well.

So there you go! Today's corporate smack talk.

That second point made little to no sense.

  • I know I'm going to catch it...

But,Reeves is a idiot.Ask some of the SCEE folks.I don't know why they make this out to be some sort of war back and forth. It's not. Two people care about talking trash..Corp shills and fanboys.

  • Sony does have a good year this year.... Now Where are those red eyes.

  • Now I'm only waiting for Microsoft's respond. Surely going to be one hell of a smacker.

    El Cernex

  • Can't really disagree with the Sony pundit.

IMO, Gears2 alone will be enough to carry the Xbox360 in Q4. And I'll be playing Ninja Gaiden II in the summer.

  • He seems to be rambling on abit but he makes a point about PS3 having a stronger line-up this year and next.

  • Like divorced parents fighting over the cat....

  • Point 1 he says they payed for DLC as a last resort, who cares? DLC is just a good thing to have and better to expand the games. Sony does deals for exclusitivity with companies and MS does too but this time it was for DLC instead.

Point 2 he says PS3 has a better line up. That's a matter of opinion but the 360 and PS3 generally have the same amount of exclusives with the 360 having slightly more and in my opinion the 360's are better. What RPG does the PS3 have that's worthwhile that's exclusive now? 360 has Lost odyssey, Kingdom under fire and blue dragon. With Tales of vesperia to come too. What fighting games does PS3 have exclusive? None, 360 has DOA4. Now lets look at the popular argument that the PS3 is having a great year and MS is getting nothing this year (incase he was talking about future line up). Fable 2, Tales of vesperia, Banjo three, Halo projects (including halo wars), Too human, Alan wake, Bioshock 2 (not sure if it'll be exclusive or not), Mass effect 2 (possibly not exclusive but ME was). Then two massive titles, Gears of war 2 and Ninja gaiden 2. Then the ones like Cry on, infinite undiscovered, far east of ziria and stuff people haven't heard much word on for a while.

point 3, GTA IV sold more on 360 in britain, probably won't in europe and probably will do in America.

  • @LosDaddie:
One thing they've done with Gears of War though is proven that it will eventually come to the PC. I've no idea on the numbers, but there will be quite a few PC people who will probably wait this time round where they might not have done before.

  • Well, Sony getting cocky again. Then again they may have a point.

Does he have a point? what's up for the Xbox360 this year? Gears 2? That's about it?

    Then again, Sony:
LittleBigPlanet? I think as cute as it is, it will be Sony's Viva Pinata. You have an action platform and it is perceived as such. Want cute games? Customers will go for a Wii.

Home? Journalists loved to hype Second Life last year, since it provided easy stories and lots of bogus analysis. This year it's boring - two years too late.

MGS4? This will be a moderate hit but not on the GTA level. Will be very good for the hometurf though.

    What else does Sony have?

  • So, the Xbox is still the underdog. Despite hardware failures and to some no "next-gen" discs, the 360 does everything else better than the PS3. Now, don't go on a fucking raving rant here, it is my opinion. 2 decades of gaming under my belt and the Xbox 360 is the only console I literally use every day. Not even my N64 with Goldeneye or Dreamcast with MVC2 managed that.

  • Sony does have a good year lined up, but I'm not sure it's anything amazing. For every big exclusive Sony has MS has one too. All I'm saying is that the gap between the consoles isn't going to widen in either direction.

  • I will agree that Sony's lineup does look better than MS later in the year.
I wonder when we'll hear news about Dyacks and Molys games..hmm

  • @thinlebowski: Gears 2, Fable 2, Ninja gaiden 2, alan wake, banjo three and whatever else comes out. Not sure if tales of vesperia will be out in 08 but it might be.

  • @Llost:

He's talking about titles for the fall.Which you only listed about 2-3 that will actually come out.

  • "It's [GTA IV] obviously the biggest title that PS3 has ever seen."

Not that it's had a lot of competition...

  • I suggest we put a bunch of Sony and Microsoft Marketing Reps in a single room and see how the slap fight goes down.

Anyways, let me know when some exclusives come out that are worth playing. Thats what I wanna hear about.

  • Jeez. Good games on both consoles, people buy the one with the games they want. There's enough monies and buyers for the both of you, Sony and MS! Though I suppose it's a fantasy to suggest these companies will ever grow up.

  • @enewtabie: Well if you look at the fact MS actually gets titles released rather than delaying them all the time (recent sony thing had 2 delays) then I'd count Lost oddyssey as a 2008 title but if you have to try and squeeze it to just a smaller point in time rather than look at the whole year to feel better then fine.

  • A patronizingly Sony Exec full of hubris? never!

    lol

  • @will: I don't care about Gears2 going to PC.

I'm a console gamer. And Gears2 will not be appearing on the PS3.

  • @thinlebowski:
"Fable 2, Tales of vesperia, Banjo three, Halo projects (including halo wars), Too human, Alan wake, Bioshock 2 (not sure if it'll be exclusive or not), Mass effect 2 (possibly not exclusive but ME was). Then two massive titles, Gears of war 2 and Ninja gaiden 2. Then the ones like Cry on, infinite undiscovered, far east of ziria and stuff people haven't heard much word on for a while."

Wow, the originality is simply mind blowing

  • @Llost:
Well if he's not talking about the fall,he should:)

    As for your list.
    Gears and Ninja G2..umm Fable 2..just wait a bit..Alan Wake,no..
and Banjo was at least visible to MVPs in Seattle the other week.Is it going to be playable?? Too Human does look better than I had previously thought.

  • @excel_excel: Yeah because the originality of a resistance sequel, a Killzone sequel, a god of war sequel, an uncharted sequel (most likely), another final fantasy, a metal gear sequel and more gran turismo is what gets the playstation kids there kicks of originality.
Face it, sequels are popular, just look at GTA IV.

  • can't we just get all get along?

its like a political war out there.

  • @enewtabie:
I meant Gears 2 and Ninja are good to go.

  • I can't argue with most of his comments. I mean MS has already shot their respective Halo wad early so they dont really have much to fall back on at the moment. And I'll also agree that GoW2 is about all they have this year too. Don't go spouting NG2 or Fable because those are moderate sellers. NG2 might be good for a cool million but not much beyond that and I'll be surprised if Fable even hits that mark at all.

  • @Sailorcancer: Point One and Two made no sense.

How is this the last shot they have? What the hell does that even mean.

And to be honest, there are millions of people who disagree about PS3 having a better upcoming lineup than 360. That's why they've bought one.

You can simply compare out/upcoming RPGs are a visual of how much better Microsoft is doing. Aside from Sony's big hitter of FF, they've got nothing on the 360's upcoming RPGs.

Microsoft successfully stole the "Sony" game of GTA away and they're bitter. That's all this is.

  • @enewtabie: I guessed banjo would be playable but I was more talking about what was coming out rather than what was definitely coming out in 08. I don't care enough to look at every release date and confirm it before I mention it in to other gamers. Notice I also mentioned tales of vesperia which I'm not sure when that comes out.

Yeah Fable 2, the first was actually not bad but not great, the second one is looking better though. Have you played Alan wake?

  • @excel_excel:

"Wow, the originality is simply mind blowing "

So, first people bash Xbox 1 for not having any true franchises.

Now that they have franchises, it's con against them?

    You really can't win.

And there are plenty more original games coming out. But the thing is, it's not worth the work to persuade someone who doesn't want to learn.

  • I think the PS3 does have a slightly better line up this year but the fact he had to point out that the Xbox 360 had a better line up the past 2 christmas's really does make me lol.

The Take-Two deal i assume hes referring to is the Exclusive DLC for GTA4 which he just sounds bitter about to be honest.

Anyway. Gears 2 will be huge. I don't think other titles such as Too Human will get much attention but it seems like a great game in concept. Fable 2 should be interesting, everything but its not really a mainstream game.

  • @Llost:

Does it really matter? At one point in time all these sequels were original, unproven IP's too.

  • @Sparx: Are you honestly saying games are only judged on sales? You should, as a gamer, respect quality titles and not just look for sales. Ratchet and clank was praised quite highly by alot of the press yet under delivered on sales but does that mean it won't be counted as a good game on the PS3?

  • Ahem.... Where is Final Fantasy 13? I mean they are both in the same situation how is he seeing PS3 depending on LBP and MGS4 as a better Christmas than Xbox360 depending on Gears Of war2 and Ninja Gaiden 2.

Did I miss something Valkyrie Chronicles I don't think will be a system seller even though it looks like a good game, and I am not sure what this man is looking at but each is in the same state of affairs.

  • @Sparx: That's the point I was making, I listed some titles and then the guy claimed there was no originality. I was merely showing him that the PS3 had titles like that and no it doesn't matter because I love sequals.

  • You call that smack talk? The worst he said was that he thinks the PS3 has a better line up thank the 360....hardly surprising considering he works for Sony! Its so ironic when its articles that blow comments out of proportion like this one that is "fueling the console war".

  • @Llost:

personally, no, because I'm quite happy playing my Heavenly Sword and what have you, but seeing as how that's the first thing most people look at when judging a game its worth pointing out.

  • @Dakobah: burn the heretic!

    :)

  • I love corporate fanboyism and pettiness!
"You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

His first point is debatable. Microsoft's big victory was the fact that GTA IV wasn't another Playstation timed exclusive and I think they would get that even without the 50 mil.$ deal. DLC was just icing in the MS cake.

I agree on his second point while the notion that GTA IV is the PS3's biggest game yet is a no-brainer.

  • @Llost:
Alan Wake is like Area 51.You've seen pictures of it..heard of it.But,nobody seems to know anything about it.

Not sure if Banjo was playable.I imagine I can find out.

Gears 2 is the seller for MS though.Everything else is a pale comparison...and I still don't think Fable 2 is going to come out.

  • I agree with Reeves that GTA was Microsoft´s last shot (at least in Europe) to sell consoles on a game and not on price.
Gears 2 will sell very very well - but most people who will buy it already have Gears 1 and therefore an Xbox already.

  • @enewtabie: We've all heard about team ico working on a new project but just because we don't know what it is doesn't mean we ignore it.

I'm not trying to promote MS over PS3, I'm just trying to show people (who usually cite 360 as having nothing on offer this year) that they should open there eyes a little. Too human, Gears 2, Fable 2 and NG 2 will be good enough for me since I'll still be playing Lost odyssey for a bit. Anyway if everyone stops posting in response to me then I'll shut up so hopefully that sounds like a good deal to you all.

  • Image of Toasticus Toasticus at 07:49 AM on 05/07/08 *

He doesn't seem to have much of a clue about what's going on in the industry. "Yeah, that Xbox thing, it's been around for... uh... how long has it been around? Whatever, it doesn't matter, they suck."

  • @Llost:
Point of order, Mass effect 2 and Bioshock 2 are 09 at the earliest. bioware and levine aren't going to rush games out every year.

Other than that you are right.

Their big argument for owning 08 was how many hiuge franchises they had coming out...now its pretty much MGS4 and LBP...unless it gets delayed. Oh and home....unless it also gets delayed. But aside form that what is left? RFOM2 should be good, but Gears 2 kindof covers that. Aside from those 3 games, ps3 owners are once again being asked to wait till next year.

  • @Llost: I hear you, the 360 does have a great line-up, I would say it is as good as last fall. I don't see what is so great for the PS3, isn't everything getting delayed left & right. Whatever, it all comes down to individual preference.

  • Too Human and Ninja Gaiden may be great games, but unless they're sensational, they won't generate many console sales. Those aren't the games people have been waiting for to finally purchase an Xbox.

For that it needs mega franchises and Microsoft has all of them out, so unless they develop some new ones I think one can say they've fired all their bullets (and used the last one with GTA really well).

For Sony I don't think games like Resistance 2 or even LBP will move many PS3's, neither will a team ICO game but Sony does have the advantage of having some franchises people are REALLY waiting for i.e. MGS4, FF XII and God of War 3.

  • it's alittle too early for sony to be gloating about having the better line up. sure, metal gear 4 is next month, (i can't get used to saying that. it doesn't even seem like a really game at this point.) but things can still go wrong for the PS3 with the delay talk of the last few days. perhaps SOCOM will fill in the gaps.

on paper, it does seem like sony has a somewhat better line up, but you can't predict these kinds of things. you have to wait and see. gears 2 vs resistance 2.

  • Wait, so the lineup for the ps3's like the same lineup we've all been looking at for about 2 years now?

    Awesome.

I'll go back to playing games, not waiting on them ;)

  • I'll be buying Gears 2 and maybe Fable 2, other than that there really is nothing worthwhile.

Alan Wake? Yeah, I already pre-ordered that one. It's called Alone In The Dark now.

  • @Rebel Without Applause:

Basically the only thing delayed is Killzone 2..and anybody who knew anything saw that one coming. Generalizations are bad..

  • @Rebel Without Applause:

True. Killzone 2 is the only thing that got delayed to next year though.

Resistance 2 seems to be the crown jewel of their fall lineup though.

  • Wahoo console wars! Pick up yer guns and lets fight! Line up and choose a side and let the bullets fly!

I love senseless violence. If I "had" to pick a side though, I'd pick Sony's because even though I like the private chat feature and the ability to check my messages ingame on my 360, I like the fact that my playstation 3 powers on every time without fail.

To me both systems have good exclusives but the ones I am interested in (Gears, Mass Effect) are just timed exclusives and eventually move to the PC where they are 100000% better and also where I'd rather play them. If I knew ME was going to be on PC I would have gotten rid of my 360 for a new DS or a PSP Slim (I fell asleep and rolled over on my DS and cracked the shit outta it...I Hate myself).

Looking much more forward to Resistance 2, LBP, and MGS4 this year. I would say Killzone 2 but those sumbitches! Maybe they need more time to make sure it doesnt suck (I'll try anything though).

I could care less about Ninja Gaiden 2 only because I suck at that damned game. The first was excellent but damnit I oculd only make it halfway through before breaking controllers. I dont have zen like patience in my old age like I used to.

  • Resistance 2 with 8 player co-op will be the sweet spot, IMO.

Hopefully Gears 2 will have 4 player co-op, then I won't be jealous much. It is a lot easier to get 3 good friends to play at one time over 7.

  • @Rebel Without Applause:
I hope they increase the player count on Gears 2.What was the cap? 8 or 12?
    Co-op should be fun though.

  • @El-Suave: God of War 3 won't move any more systems than Ninja Gaiden II will. Both are games that skew heavily to the hardcore audence that has already bought consoles.

  • @El-Suave: Not necessarily, Halo 2 sold way more consoles for Microsoft than Halo 1 did. I would expect to see MS giving Gears 2 the Halo 3 hype this winter and given how effective it was last time it wouldn't surprise me to see Gears 2 shift a lot of consoles. They'll probably do some special edition consoles too! ;)

Still, I like that Reeves was actually quite restrained and didn't totally trash the competition, which is an attitude I always found rather classless. Personally I think both systems have got such strong line-ups that this year will be even bigger than last year for games.
