American internet connected Wiis are blinking! The Nintendo Channel has just gone live. Here, let's let Nintendo describe it:
Nintendo Channel is an interactive guide to what's new in the world of Nintendo - now available for easy download from the Wii Shop Channel. Watch trailers, mini-documentaries, product demonstrations, and gameplay videos. Browse the game guide pages to get information about your favorite games on Wii and Nintendo DS. You can even click to order games straight from your Wii, if you have the Internet Channel installed. Make sure your Wii is connected to the internet, and get started!
Keep in mind, that last bit of info is key.

Click to order games, eh? Would have thought with the Wii browser that would take a couple of hours, what with all those extra SECURE pages eating up bandwidth.
Regardless, I'm really looking forward to this when it comes to Europe later in the month. Hopefully we get some cool DS demos!
I just checked this out an our or so ago, and it was my first news of Rock Band Wii. Whee.
@thesuperiormurray: Uh. H.
It's finally got to America and not a moment too soon - hopefully everyone will enjoy the DS demos and game trailers.
Personally, I hope the DS demos on offer will be better than the Japanese ones, which I found somewhat lacking having downloaded most of them and not enjoying many at all.
Woo! Now that's out somewhere in English, no doubt it'll get here eventually...
They had me at "DS Downloads."
i thought the US get it on the 12th not the 7th. when the hell do we get it??!?!?!?
better not be the 30th i remember seeing it some where, that'll suck if we do. -.-
Good thing I checked here before going to bed (been up doing school stuff). I saw the light on my Wii, but I just figured it was some new contest on Mii Channel.
I guess I'm going to sleep a bit later to mess around wit the features in the new channel. Oh well, 4 hours sleep here I come.
Is this the one that allows DS demo downloads?
I've been waiting for this for freaking EVER, wonder what took so fucking long but oh god gonna go download it now.
Stupid question: What about european wii user's?
@RetroBob:
Yup. I just played the DS Ninja Gaiden and I checked out some videos. Looks like it has a good number of features. I'll probably be checking out the game suggestion feature when I have the time.
@Rexter: Just look at what was released in Japan six months ago
wow... I love this channel!
@Rexter: May 30.
[kotaku.com]
How many blocks it takes couse I have only 100 left.
Jesus... 122 blocks to download the channel and then ANOTHER 126 blocks for the save file??
How the hell am I going to have room for WiiWare next week?
I just noticed something. It is not showing all my games in the recommend game field.... It's only taking the titles rated E, nothing Higher.... WHAT GIVES NINTENDO? I can't recommend No More Heroes to other gamers?
What about Resident Evil..... Of hell, Even Splatterhouse from your own Virtual console!
wow, could be nice to get some gameplay-previews directly form nintendo.
although it will most likely be first-party-only, i guess.
It takes about 180 for the channel and another 140 for the "save" file to cache video.
I'm currently recommending games that I have played and I noticed that one I have played and over an hour like it says in the heading of the recommendation page doesn't show up. Which might be good because it is the only title that I wouldn't recommend. I bought it hoping to get more support from a certin developer/publisher.
@murfi:
The description on the update message explicitly said third-party, and I already noticed a few third-party games on it.
@ConstyXIV:
oh, now thats really cool. cant wait for it.
I fiddled with it this morning. I'll play with it some more this afternoon.
I hope they hire Smoochum as one of their model/spokes-...things. His/her Pokemon Channel surveys were always enthralling, and the Shape-Up program was a good cardio regimen that didn't require any expensive equipment.
I was glad to see this!
It's nice. But I still can't understand why Nintendo insists on sending these updates at the most unholy hours of the morning.
@EmeraldDragon: they're Japanese
...This is just a bunch of commercials! Why were we all looking forward to this??
Ugh. I can't do anything with this channel. It keeps saying an error has occurred, i should check my Internet connection settings, or wait a couple minutes and try again, error code 269900.
I can't tell if it's because Nintendo's servers are swamped right now, or if it's because my Wii's wireless connection is getting a lot of packet loss. I can stream videos on the Internet channel, so I'm really not sure what gives.
So, I take it, there's a menu you all can get to that *isn't* the video menu?
@EmeraldDragon:
Try to keep in mind that Nintendo is Japanese.
@creid - is not New to Kotaku:
Everyone has their reasons, free DS demos is it for me. I'm pretty sure some people that are less internet savy will be happy to get info on games without mucking through web sites.
Downloaded this morning. Looks like a big waste of space to me. Just a bunch of Nintendo ads. The DS demos might be nice, but that doesn't really concern me (*cough* M3 DS Simply *cough*). But of course I work in the IT industry where every "free seminar" or "free information packet" is actually just a sales pitch, so it bugs me.
I'm with @creid - is not New to Kotaku: and @BenRad:
Waste of channel space. Wake me up when WiiWare goes live.
Yes! It is about time. I've been looking forward to the channel for a long time too.
Next up: Wiiware
I've been waiting for the channel for quite some time. I'm all about the DS demos.
Also, the interface is pretty nice and the videos look pretty damn good. I'll play around with it more once I get home from work.
I downloaded the channel this morning before leaving for work. I didn't get to play with any of the features, but, I did watch the WiiWare video. We'll see if there's anything waiting to be downloaded on May 12th. We'll see...
Oh wow, this is great news!
I got up in the middle of the night to take care of some "business" and noticed an eerie glow coming from my living room. I thought it was just poltergeists so I stumbled my way back to bed. Now I know what the glow was all about, but that still doesn't explain the tennis balls and jelly strewn across the room...
@Article: "Make sure your Wii is connected to the internet, and get started!"
But wait...if it's not connected, how did I get this message?
...OOO-WEEEE-OOOOOH!!!
But seriously, Nintendo needs to use this to add releases (VC, WiiWare, Retail) dates to the Wii Calendar. It's too perfect.
I thought I left my Wii on overnight and turned it back off when I saw that it was on this morning.
I just got my Wii this past weekend so I'm still new to how it operates. I just turned it back off as I was leaving the house. I hope I didn't screw up the download.
Oh and as far as the acutally channel goes...
Neat.
@BenRad: I don't think you can complain about this if you simply pirate your DS games...that's the main draw of this channel.
Cool, I'm looking forward to the DS demos, if they can implement Wii demos that'll be the icing on the cake.
Uh oh how exciting, will connect it to the internets now xD
@Josimba: If you have WiiConnect24 on (I think it's the default setting), you can either fully shut down the Wii (red light) or put it in standby (orange light)
Full shut down is the power button on the console, while standby would be using the power button on the remote.
If WiiConnect24 is turned on, and the console is on standby (and connected to the internet) it will be able to send and recieve messages 24/7.
It will not, however, begin/continue/end downloads. So if you're in the process of downloading an update/feature/game, you don't want to power down.
@Josimba: That took me three reads to finally understand what you were talking about.
Just a heads up to Everyone:
Download Jam Sessions! The "game" (let's not go there) is addictive as hell, AND has a "record" option!!!
Did anyone see Layton? It looks so CRISP on a tv set!
@KM91: That's what she said.
This is BIG news, the DS demo downloads are enough to justify the installation. How is any of this shit gonna be stored on a Wii anyway? Is my SD card going to finally come in handy as a true storage device?
Hmmm... don't care about the ads, but the video implementation is pretty nifty. Why don't I have a Hulu Channel on my Wii yet?
I'm liking the DS demos. Ninja Gaiden is better than I thought it would be (though not good enough for me to buy it :P).
@LuppyLuptonium: Are you sure it's only E rated games? Are you sure it's not Nintendo-published gaames? Because Twilight Princess is T and it shows up, and Zack & Wiki is E and it doesn't.
Already tried it and for example Miyamoto interview is in spanish, very cool as i am in Mexico :)
About time.
