Though, it may seem like Hollywood has a monopoly on shit game movie adaptations, others can make shit game adaptations! Take the Japanese film industry, which is churning out what apparently is a crud version of computer visual novel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Japanese movie site Chou Eiga Hihyou gave the movie a 10 out of... 100. The problem, according to the reviewer, is that the movie cannot capitalize on what makes the game so interesting: Cute characters in a love comedy who gradually become violent and bloody. In live action, that kind of story arc is old hat! Also, we're pretty pissed that the actresses don't have green or purple hair. I mean...hello?!

Uhh.. Duh
I heard the Live Action version of Death Note was pretty good. Anyone here to confirm it?
Yeah, if you enjoy crappy effects (the Death God isn't even of 90s quality) and giant amounts of overacting. Does NOT work as live-action.
they will never get the adaptations right.
They got Parasite Eve right. Although the movie and game were nothing like the original book.
I still look forward to watching the OneeChanbara movie. :(
@Renoistic: Oh I see :/
You know what was a good live-action adaption? Cromartie High. Wasn't as Godly as the manga or series, but still good.
@UmeShoryu:
Oh, man. Humanity looks forward to that.
A pity, since the anime adaptation is actually really good.
Though as far as I know, the live action movie is only comprised of the first chapter of the game, which doesn't really play on many of the character relationships, which don't start coming in until the second chapter.
the adaptation of 'ryu ga gotoku' by takashi miike was great. captured the feeling of the game perfectly.
@KirbySS:
They actually made it into a live-action thing?
I'll need to look into that.
Get ready for 20th Century Boys! That'll be 'spectacular'...maybe.
@Renoistic: Crapy effects? I didn't think so and I think that the Shingamis fitted in perfect but I bet you're thinking that because they didn't look super-realistic that that was a bad thing, you might not know this but that was the way it was intended.
@Garo: It was very enjoyable and if you haven't seen all of Death Note the movies don't ruin it either. There's a new live action Death Note coming out too called 'L changes the World'
As for Higurashi no Naku Koro, the anime was very enjoyable and interesting but obviously the live action adaption didn't work out as well. Oh well
Anime usually fails in the transition to live action. Still, there are some titles I'd love to see made into live-action movies - Ghost in the Shell being at the top of my list (yes, I know Spielburg is working on it as we speak).
Argh, and I love this anime so much D:. too bad the movie couldn't live up to the greatness that is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
probably needed angst ridden teens instead of those hack actors to do the movie instead...
Sailor Moon Live Action was hilarious. :D
@Captain Impulse: Well, that's not actually going to be live action, it's going to be CG and I don't know if you should be looking forward to that....then again I'm not sure you shouldn't either.
meh...as long as they release the third season i dont care much about the live-action movie =/
then again, why did they even bother in the first place? =|
@Grey Gecko: The same reason why hollywood tries to make movies out of comic book IPs.
An attempt to make the $$$.
Ah! Higurashi is the most awesome series ever, I had no idea they made a crappy movie based on it.
@Witzbold: truth, but i belive that if they are really aiming for a movie about an anime they should make an animated movie, not a live action
i have yet to see one that really gets the essence of the any series to the big screen =(
@push eject: I actually felt the Ryu ga Gotoku movie wasn't very cohesive although it did touch on the high points of the game. I suppose that could be ascribed to Miike cos his Ichi the Killer started out great but kinda ended on a whimper.
Somehow Japanese movies always drop the ball when it comes to the last 1/3 of the movie, either that or the show doesn't hold up cohesively.
It's not that it's the movie itself who sucks, but imagine this, short down an +50 hour long story down to an 1,5 movie... it's bound to fail no mater what you do about it.
The anime was decent but thats because it's total 16 hours long and contain all important aspect of the plot.
@axiom: Yes, there is a Cromartie live action movie, and it actually works as such. But that's because Cromartie is already stuffed full of hilarious cheesiness, add to that really cheap special effects and people in gorilla suits - well, it just works.
Live action Higurashi? Somehow I don't see that working.
Live action Death Note? Oh dear, I hope the DVD comes with a pack of air-sickness bags.
Uh they already had me at the DOA porn movie.
@Garo: I agree with MasterDex, the live-action Death Note is fantastic. One of the better movies I've seen in the last couple years..
The first live-action "NANA" movie was also very good but the second one was (sadly) not so good..
@Garo: yeah, the 2 live-action movies of Death Note are very good. But the characters are a bit different from the manga, from what I've heard; and the story clashes a lot with the original in the endings.
On the contrary with this movie being crap, they've already already announced the sequal to this.
Proves that quality doesn't always make the most money.
No! Not Higurashi! Why can't you guys (movie studios) pick on Fate/Stay Night or something instead?!
The anime version was the best horror I'd seen in a decade. Then I saw season two and took "in a decade" off the end. It's really deeply engaging instead of getting that "Let's split up and look for the killer so one of us disappears!" horror camp vibe in so many shows.
@Garo:
It zooms right through the plot and the end is non-canon, but it's ok. I'd show it to someone who has an anime aversion to get them hooked.
You're Under Arrest was a GREAT live action adaptation of an anime.
Sorry, actual people's faces can't do the type of sickening contortions that makes Higurashi so fucking creepy. You can't spell manslaughter without laughter.
Higurashi is more a mystery than a love comedy. But yes, watching people descend into madness is great fun. However, it takes skilled actors and actresses to do it.
Will Higurashi know no peace?
They pull airings from Japanese TV station because some crazy chick chops up her father.
The American distributor of the series closes up shop after only putting out 3 DVDs of the 1st season. Leaving anybody who wanted to support the anime in limbo.
AND they make a crappy live action flick.
This is one of the best head twisters out there and it seems to just get shit on from all sides.
@fuchikoma: "Then I saw season two and took "in a decade" off the end."
Soooo... is that a good or bad thing?
Come on, people. Let's not get philosophical about this. We all know that the best video game adaptations that come out of Japan are the ones in the back of the store, hidden out of sight, featuring a whole lot of black dots on the covers.
@Danin:
Kona-chan combo! Hi-five! One day we shall outnumber the prinnies, muheheheh...
@Demaar:
No, what I meant was the more I see of it the more I think it's the best horror I've seen period.
@dunetiger : the mekuri master:
"Oh yeah, AV just stands for audio-video, they put it on ALL the good movies, don't worry about it! No, it's probably just a cultural difference, I'm sure they have this stuff on TV..." haha
I hope this gets the ">Casey And Friends treatment.
I knew it was gonna crash and burn :(
I saw the promos for it around a month or so back and it just looked like another Japanese horror/murder mystery movie. Then when I saw the Higurashi title I just knew it wasn't going to work. It just seem it had a too run-or-the-mill type of story telling based on a series that was anything but.
LOL They're all gonna die...
I want a kodomo no jikan live. also a lucky star live wouldn't be so bad!!!!!
Too bad, I really love, love Higurashi. I actually ended up rewatching it last week, when I was sick (Still am sick, BTW ).
But yeah, I could tell you a live action Higurashi would fail.
Ugh, there is nothing creepier-looking than anime schoolgirls. Why don't they have noses?
I'll stick with just the anime thank you.
Still looking for the rest of the When They Cry DVD's anyone have a cheap place to look?
