Omega Five! Great little shooter. The Xbox Live Arcade game features an unlockable "retro mode" where the game's graphics and the sound go 16-bit! You know what, that's pretty neato. The score was done by game music vet Hiroyuki Iwatsuki, who apparently has been inspired more by game music than anything else. (Word has it he hadn't even heard the Beatles until he started working in the game industry!) Iwatsuki says this about XBLA:
As far as video game music is concerned, when the service first started, we either had to limit the number of the tracks or use built-in synth to play each tune in order to accommodate the capacity restrictions. I think that most of these technical problems can be solved now because of recent improvements in the technology. I think that it would be truly interesting if games come about using the powerful sound capabilities of the Xbox 360 while incorporating a system that manipulates sound in real-time so that the music interacts on a deep level with the gameplay.
We think it would be truly interesting if more developers like Natsume made high quality XBLA games.

I really don't get why everyone hated this. It's my favorite XBLA game to date, and it's terrific.
Wake me up when Jesper Kyd starts doing XBLA music.
Improved music.. NICE!
I really hope musical scores improve on all video games. Maybe I'm showing my age, but Video Game musc isn't what it used to be. There used to be more care love and atention to soundtracks. Especially games made by Namco. Who often gave you three alternative versions of the soundtrack. Soul Blade on PSone has one of the best soundtracks ever for a fighter! I guess since back then the graphics were more limited. So they paid more attention to the soundtrack?
These days you either get the cinematic style soundtrack, licensed sountrack or the awful generic soundtracks found in VF5 or DOA4. Kudos to Namco though for trying a bit more with Tekken 5, but I'm getting off track here. XBLA music is the topic. Often XBLA games will have one music track and loop it. Marble Blast for example, what a waste. Even an old game like Marble Madness had different music tracks for each levek. No excuse! Switchball gets it right though, but that games too short.
How do you unlock retro mode?
@Orionsaint: Play some games OTHER than fighting games so you have a wider sample space to base your "music in games is shit today" opinions on. I suggest you go play Hitman or Final Fantasy and then reassess your statements.
How can you unlock that mode, and how does it look? That might actually be a reason for me to get the game.
@BillyLee, @L_K_M: It seems you have to "Complete Arcade Mode using Sensei" to unlock Retro mode. I think that's too much work for me :-(
Yay for improved music.
Now... if only Lumines 2 can have some improved music too! Personal choice, but I can't stand the music in Lumines 2.
I know, I'm kinda off topic. :")
@Ashurahori:
Define 'everyone' please. Most reviews I read were positive, maybe not giving scores of 9s but positive, on the whole.
@Orionsaint: Ever play a lil game called Shadow of the Colossus? That game had one of the best OST's in recent history.
I really enjoyed it, Shhhh if you can keep a secret, I enjoyed it more than Ikaruga..
Jet Set Radio/Radio Future had the best soundtrack ever for me. I'm also REALLY liking the soundtrack in The World Ends With You, it's a huge mix of different J-Pop/Rock/Hiphop.
@Superstar90:
you missed the S on soundtracks!
NOOB!
"We think it would be truly interesting if more developers like Natsume made high quality XBLA games."
BURN!!!
@Orionsaint: Jeez man, even Smash Bros Brawl has dozens upon dozens of alternate music, matter of fact I'd say the sound is probably where games have improved most!
Never heard of the Beatles? Well maybe this is a good sign of the 100 years of healing music will have to do after they poop stained the art. ;)
@Mr_Fujisawa: No shame there. Ikaruga is way overrated.
I'm happy that O5 is getting some attention. Its a great game, with great music.
This is the first that many of my friends heard about the retro mode on Omega Five. I guess I didn't say enough about it earlier.
Anyway, the retro music is great. The retro visuals also really reminded me of Silpheed on Sega CD. I just wish I could set the game to have the non-retro visuals and the retro music.
@new_pornographer: Most reviews I've seen were sixes.
@Grinman:
Oh I have played Hitman and Final Fantasy games. Hitman is another cinematic score I can't remember. FF games have nice scores I just wish they wouldn't sound like media files. I wish they'd used a real orchestra.
I play so many games. but none of the music in games these days real excites or inspires me. Has anyone here hummed the theme to bioshock, lost planet lately? Whatever happened to a memorable melody? Like i said I'm so old skool, NES, SNES, PS1 music. That's not to say I don't like any game music today. Portal, God Of War, Katamari Damacy I love all that.
@TheGamesta:
Yes I beat SOTC three times. I loved it! I adore the acore. I even made a tribute video to the score I posted on youtube, but youtube terminated my account recently. I had my 3rd copyright infingement.
score that is
@Superstar90:
Another great soundtrack. Although it has some annoying parts. I really like it.
