Kaz Says GTA Fans "Come Home" To PS3

No Home Jokes More Kaz! Can you handle it? While hanging out at the SCEE event yesterday, Sony's Kaz Hirai spoke on the importance of GTA IV to the PS3, and whether or not he felt the game had been a factor in driving hardware sales. He didn't take the bait entirely, but couldn't resist having a nibble, telling VG247 that when it comes to Grand Theft Auto, a lot of people call the PlayStation home:

I think Grand Theft Auto, the franchise, has always been associated with the PlayStation platform first and foremost, and so I think consumers are coming back again.

They had previous versions of Grand Theft Auto on previous [PlayStation] platforms, so it's always good to come home to PlayStation 3 as well, I think.

He goes on to say that "based on the numbers" he's seen thus far, the PS3 version of the game's done quite well for itself. How well? No idea. They're Kaz's numbers, and as such, are top secret.

  • Well he is right, GTA IV was one of the reasons I got one. :D

  • He is right. I just hope we get some downloadable content.

  • I'll wait for the NPD data so I can laugh in his face.

  • Although the 360 does have the upcoming downloadable content, I still stuck with the PS3 version.

  • Will GTA IV support Home?

  • So far the 360 has outsold the PS3 version...how do his comments make any sense?

  • @Vidril: Seconded!

    @Shinamano:
360 has higher install base. Doesnt mean there selling more hardware because of that.

  • @Shinamano:

Probably because he didn't say it did outsell the 360.It's moving sales of hardware and games...and he's right.Sony is still not in bad shape for sales of GTA4 compared to 360(and MS has a much larger install base)
People do associate Grand Theft auto with Playstation..Seems simple enough.

  • Sony people's comments not making sense? Seeming Arrogant? Empty? Self-denial?

It's just part of the scenery of this generation.

Wii runs away with mediocre games, 360 is the platform for the best games and sony keep making promises that 'they'll do better'.

  • LOL @ Kaz in the GTA boxart.

  • I own both systems and bought it on the PS3.

  • Well if anyones seen the tv ads over here its very tempting to pick up a 360 for €199 and the game for €60 instead of paying €450 and €70 for a ps3 so its no wonder its doing much better on 360 than ps3.

Think about all the poor students and now homeless gamers of yester-year who just got DSL in their box?

  • GTA is for a lot of people, a Playstation game. I suspect that lots of folks still using their PS2's will/have upgraded because of this title and that the PS3 will have a much greater hardware bump because of that.

  • @enewtabie: So a self proclaimed "Playstation franchise" sold more on a different system and that's good?

    Keep clutching those straws.

  • @edhe (xbl):
That's just a opinon that 360 has the best games..I'm sure there are plenty of Sony and Nintendo folks that disagree. All of them have plenty of mediocre titles(360 included)

  • I finally went and made the plunge for the PS3, and GTAIV was my first game I got for it. I reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyy hope I don't regret this in the months / years to come.

  • Image of Sailorcancer Sailorcancer at 06:41 AM on 05/07/08 *

    @edhe (xbl):

Yeah, too bad you can't play them and you have to have MS on speed dial 24/7.

  • @Manny:
Pucker up to your electronic box if you want to.Here's a objective look(you might want to try that for once)

But,if you look at the sales of a title on a platform that is about 7 million consoles behind in users. It is pretty good.

    I have the 360 version of GTA4 btw(and a PS3)

  • @rrghy: You wont. Get Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, and Warhawk to appreciate your purchase. Get some PSN games like Super Stardust HD, or Echochrome, or Everyday Shooter. And look forward to games like Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBig Planet, Haze, Final Fantasy 13/versus 13, and Mirror's Edge.

There's a shit-ton of quality of gaming available, you just need to know where to find it.

  • I'm sick of hearing this. GTA was on PC, then Dreamcast, then PS1, then gameboy color, then GBA, then PS2, then Xbox.

It's not a PS franchise and shouldn't be associated with it. I'm sure more copies sold on PS1 and PS2 than the other systems, but that's because of the higher install base. If there is any platform this game should be "coming home" to it should be the PC because that's where it started.

  • Do not forget titles like Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection and Battle Fantasia the ps3 is region free for most movies and all games.

  • I own both consoles and bought GTA IV for the great Xbox360.

No way am I missing out on the exclusive DLC.

  • @Superstar90:

I don't think of what the first one started as but as what the rest went. From GTA2 to San Andreas it was all Playstation first then it got to other systems. More people are just used to Playstation more than anything else.

As For Me: I really don't care for this. I have it for the only system I have. A 360.

  • @edhe (xbl):

How are you not banned yet?
    -_-

  • @Superstar90:

Don't forget the PSP as well. While it is technically part of the "Sony platform" it is peripheral at best. As you rightly pointed out "home" is the PC and the PS2 only became associated with the franchise through its gargantuan last-gen hardware lead.

I have all three next-gen consoles and picked it up for the 360. In fact, I picked up another 360 when I bought it, as I took advantage of Best Buy's "buy GTA and any 360 and get a $50 gift card" deal to upgrade to an elite and toss the old one upstairs to my kids.

  • @Sailorcancer:
And Sony has no games, and Wii is a gimmick. I think we've covered all our tired-old jokes bases here now.

  • All that matters right now is GTA4 and which system the game is 1. better on(even though slightly),which is the 360 version and 2. which syatem the game will have a longer life on which will ultimately move more new systems in the long run, which again is the 360.

I don't understand all the talk about the prior versions of GTA which for all important reasons don't really matter all that much in the here and now except for reasons to do with gaming nostalgia. The PS2 was and is the PS2.The PS3 is Sony's current system and if comparison's absolutely HAVE to be made then let them be made with 360 versions of games vs. PS3 and none other.

  • That pic is awesome.

I associate GTA with the PC. GO! DMA design! Yeah!

  • For me, GTA sticks to the PC. The first one was hours of fun on the PC and the LAN deathmatch-es are(was) ridiculous fun!

  • To me, gta has always ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth with playstation.
The first one had rampant slow down on psx. and gta iii i think was responsible for my first ps2 dying(overworked i think). I've gotten all of them since III on xbox systems and have been more than satisfied.

  • @Manny: Of course you will because you read his comments as "the PS3 version sold more than the 360 version," which isn't what he said. But you're going to keep telling yourself that. So have fun laughing, crazy man!

@Shinamano: His comments make sense because he isn't saying the PS3 version sold more. So that's two people so far who have misinterpreted his comments, even though there isn't much room for interpretation.

@edhe (xbl): Let's see: No, no, no, and no. There are your answers.

@Manny: No, it's good because the game is apparently selling well on the PS3 and is moving PS3 units. There's nothing bad about that.

    Man, you people are ruthless!

  • @Shinamano: You missed the point of his comment. it sailed over your head.

  • I bought a 360 specifically for this game, and sold my Wii.

All the games I'm looking forward to are on both (Fallout 3 & Force Unleashed primarily), so it was the multiplayer, achievements & DLC that put it over the top for me.

  • everyone is trying to turn comments into fan wars

  • @castout: I know, ruthless, right?

  • Well, Grand Theft Auto has never really seemed too tied to one platform to me. I played III on the PS2, Vice City on the PC, and San Andreas on the Xbox.

I ended up buying IV for the Xbox 360, mainly because of extra DLC and Achievements, although I also prefer the Xbox 360 controller to that of the PS3.

  • Image of PapaBear434 PapaBear434 at 07:06 AM on 05/07/08 *

Kaz... You're an idiot. And this from a PS3 fan.

  • Why would I play GTA IV on the PS3?
    - I already have a 360.
    - It wont have the DLC.
    - The 360 has more great games.
    - The 360 has more RPGs (my favorite genre).
    - I like to talk to my pals while gaming online.
    - Sony ditched BC (just stupid to me).
    - I'd have to pay another $400 to own the PS3.
... I could go on and on...

  • The sales are very close considering that there is no marketing for PS3 and very aggressive advertising for the 360 version.

Along with larger install base and higher attach rate for 360 i dont think the numbers work in favour of the 360.

  • @thinkfreemind:

    So don't buy it?

  • It's funny; I always thought the home of the franchise was PC, where it all started. Oh well.

  • @kylenalepa:

I guess Microsoft was right when they predicted Americans need bigger controllers for their fat cheeseburger hands..that's why the Japanese have shunned 360..I'm American but the Dualshock controllers are perfect for me..I've always hated xbox controllers.

  • I had GTA3/VC/SA all for the PS2, then when I got rid of the PS2 I got GTA3/VC for the Xbox. I didn't like SA at all.

Now, I can only speak for my gaming friends, but all 20 or so of them all played the GTA series on the PS2 but all own GTAIV for the 360 today. Mainly because none of them want or own a PS3.

  • @sanctusmortis:

No, the Home of a franchise is where most of the sales come from, where the $ is..that in the past has been playstation consoles.

  • @Rebel Without Applause:

If you didn't like San Andreas..you must not live in California..cause Rockstar nailed it on that one.

  • @kylenalepa: Yeah, the 360 controller is steps above the PS3 controller that has been the same thing for years on end. I like how the 360 controller is similiar to my other favorite controller on the Dreamcast.

  • Pffft. By the time Home comes out, I'll be playing GTA V.

  • @qBIRD: You're right, I don't live in Cali, but that isn't why I didn't like it. I wasn't into the story, the landscape and objectives to do are awesome of course. It may also be that when I got it I was way too into playing with friends over XBL to turn on the PS2.

  • Isn't home for GTA on the PC?

  • i dont like how the DS3 feels with this game. the triggers for driving and shooting are a little too stiff, my fingers slip off a lot. It just gets annoying after a while.

Ive gotten way more playtime in with the 360 version, its really just a controller preference although I think the 360 version looks slightly better.

  • GTA fans come home to PS3? Hmmm, I swear GTA started on PC first (microsoft windows) and now is back on a microsoft platform (xbox 360) so in reality its coming back home to microsoft?

  • If by come home, he means "Purchase greater quantities on the 360 platform," then Kaz is super-correct as always.

  • Funny thing is, I have never ever played GTA on a playstation system.

Then again, I guess I'm way in the minority here.

  • I have a PS3 and a 360, my PS3 is for exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, MGS4, Final Fantasy, etc and Blu Ray movies. I picked up GTA4 for the 360 because of the DLC, I can play all of my friends online (none of them have a PS3), and I enjoy what the pursuit of achievements adds to the experience and longevity of a game.

  • @Rebel Without Applause:

That's interesting, i enjoy the ps3 controller more. Guess i'm way behind in greatness when it comes to controllers. Though i do love those bubbly jelly-bean buttons that the 360 controller has.

  • It used to be that way I'll agree with that. Once I learned that it had on-line multiplayer I ditched PS in favor of the xbox360 version. Maybe "home" will make things more even, I'll just have to wait and see.

  • @thinkfreemind: Calm down there, son. Who are you trying to convince? I don't own a PS3 - I don't have the cash right now, but does anybody here care? - and to be blunt, I don't care why you don't own a PS3 either. None of us do. 360 has a great line-up of games, an excellent library, but guess what, so does Sony's behemoth. Guys like you and I chose one way, for the moment, but that in no way makes us superior.

Anyway, I just love how the sales of one game seems to be the solid proof all fanboys need to claim victory in the console war. I hate Sony, but I also hate Microsoft. I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I had no problem selling my Wii when the games stopped coming. I just go where the software is, and last fall, starting with BioShock, that was the poorly designed 360. (Note: I'm not a PC gamer)

  • he's got a point, kind of. the "hardcore" gamer to the casual gamers know that sony had GTA first for a number of years and usually when the news would cover GTA for whatever "it's teaching your kids to kill people" bullshit story, it's the PS2 in the shot, not the xbox.

now, that's not to say the 360 isn't going to outsell the PS3 version. it's a no brainer. but, i don't doubt that the PS3 is moving hardware and selling alot more then people think it will. i really think that people are underestimating the PS3 numbers, like because of the 360's DLC, the PS3 version would somehow magically sit on the shelf.

people love the console wars. makes them feel good about themselves, i guess.....

  • As a rabid GTA fan who has played all of the GTA's on my Ps2, I will certainly buy GTA4 on my Xbox 360. I can't afford a ps3. Sorry Kaz.

  • Unfortunately, HOME will never see the light of day, but that is another issue entirely. The Sony people really shouldn't just throw the word "home" around, it gives gives people hope.
