Finally something about EA's horror sci-fi game Dead Space beyond simply telling us it is scary and in space. I've been worried about the game's story since I first heard about the title, but seeing the developers discuss the amount of work and detail they've put into the main character's back story alone makes me feel a great deal better about the whole thing. The most reassuring bit of all was their acknowledgment of that universal truth...sci-fi and horror work against each other, so you have to tone down one for the other to work. Alien did so well because it was a horror movie that made you forget you were in outer space. Jason X, on the other hand, failed because...well, because it was Jason X, but the point still stands.

@Maldron: I read that and thought it was cool idea.
@ggodo: Yeah. That article basically sold me on the idea of Dead Space, which is pretty damn cool.
"Enormous resource constraint."
Why does that sound familiar...
I am now looking at this game differently.
@tmanflys: in a good way, that is.
It kinda reminds me of Bioshock mixed with RE4. The fact that some parts of the story are told in audio logs remind me of Bioshock. And the over the shoulder camera style is very remenicent of RE4. BUT IT IS IN SPACE! I'm pretty excited to see what it will be.
Do want!
I hate scary things, but I might just have to play this.
Looks great, and any game that has a comic prequel thats drawn by Ben Templesmith is alright in my books.
@neoepochx: it DOES look ALOT like RE4. i guess we'll see if that's a good or bad thing soon enough.
it seems like a interesting idea, i'll admit. i might need more time checking this one out before i commit to a more solid opinion.
Ohh, man! I was excited about this game since it was announced last year, but now I just can't wait! It has been so long since there was a good space horror game. Enemy Zero on Sega Saturn was the very last good one I played, and that was more than ten years ago.
May Dead Space be more like Enemy Zero and less like Run Like Hell.
I LOVE THE LIGHTING IN THESE DEV DIARIES
i love halloween. ghostbusters and dead space. its gonna be nice. REAL nice
@DarkFalzX:
Oh. My. God. Somebody mentioned Enemy Zero. I haven't mentioned that game since I played it last century and I'm shocked to see someone bring it up. One of the most tense gaming experiences that I've EVER had. There really was nothing else to the game, but that one thing it did EXTREMELY well.
Oh, and as for Dead Space, with possibly Resident Evil 4 and Alan Wake coming around the same time (emphasis on 'possibly'), I wonder if it'll get sidelined by consumers ...
@DARTH_TIGRIS: RE5?
I'm really excited to get scared shitless in the fourth quarter of this year.
@MIKEAWESOME: Which is to say I'm incredibly excited about all the survival horror games coming out.
I was checking this out yesterday. I have to say, Dead Space has my interest piqued. Only time will tell whether its as good as the developers let on it is.
amazing, and I thought that developers were first creating the story and than tweaking it to fit it to the game and not creating the game and than coming uo with some story for it... :o
anyway, the game looks nice but I dont like how the enemies just lie on the ground waiting for you to arrive.. yeah I know, some animals do that but you could simply kill them from far away (as far as you can see) by shooting them while their lieing on the ground.. :|
1. Jason X was a fucking masterpiece, dude. Okay, so it was no A bout de souffle, but it was a fun little flick that didn't take itself seriously. All things considered, it was a very clever parody of slasher flicks--much, much better than the Scary Movies, for example.
2). Unless I missed something, no one in that clip is a "writer." I saw a producer, an EP, a CD, and a production designer, but no writer. I hope folks will forgive me when I say that I'm not going to take any production diary about "story" seriously if they don't include a FREAKING WRITER IN THE GODDAMN VIDEO.
These guys can talk about how important the story is all they want, but it's not going to mean a damn thing unless they have a decent writer on board.
@Maldron:
Blast you, cerebral flatulence!!!
Yes. Resident Evil FIVE. Thank you.
I've been interested in this title since it's reveal and I'm glad to see that they appear to be taking the time to make it worth playing. Hopefully it doesn't just turn into a bunch of monster closets like doom 3
The pinnacle of Sci-Fi and Horror is clearly Leprechaun 4: In Space.
This looks more better all the time and yes avoid every damn Doom3 cliche (the escort robot was the only remotely cool thing about the game). Boss battles and grindfests are boooooring..
Don't bioshock it down for the masses either please.
Tell a story and make it feel like the choices matter.
thanks...
I think the atmosphere is really important to this game. I hope the developers include more thick specks in the foggy air. I'm Super excited for this one.
I have trouble believing scifi categorically works against horror. If anything, it raises the standard for plausibility and suspension of disbelief. If that backdrop works against a foreboding, fear-inducing, narrative, then maybe that's an issue with the story itself rather than the genre.
They talk about it like they've just invented the concept of a story in a videogame; but I'm still really looking forward to this.
